So one of the previews mentioned seeing a fire gorilla and mechanized dinosaur on Monster Island. Where the hell are the screenshots you bastards?
" Cryptic is hoping to develop a native voice chat program to facilitate communication between PC and console players
" The technology exists to allow PC and console players to coexist on the same servers.
" Players can complete ~90% the game alone though there are dungeons that can -only- be played in groups.
" Guilds will have focused tasks and things to do.
" PvP will yield experience, faction points, and equipment drops.
" PvP will be in at launch.
" Crafting and the economy will allow players to invent things
" Transportation will include planes, boats, rockets from hub areas to other places in the game.
" Achievement badges called perks will be included
" System specifications will be tailored along the "mid-range" to allow access to as many players as possible.
" Champions will not be ported to Macs.
" Emmert ended his portion of the discussion with this quote, worthy of inclusion: "Our goal is 'zero to hero in five minutes'."
As much as I love being rewarded for PvP I don't like being rewarded for Arena style PvP, which is the only kind they've announced since Villains probably aren't making it in at launch. That just seems ripe for exploitation.
ooooooh
It also ties into the Player Versus Player combat in some way. Emmert says that you always start by creating a hero, and the Nemesis system links to the PvP: “How the players accesses that archvillain and how do they control it?†He leaves it hanging, but it’s easy enough to speculate. Generally speaking, the lessons of City of Heroes are obvious. “My belief is that you have to have [PVP] in the game at launch if you’re going to do it,†says Emmeret, “and you have to have it be completely optional, as there’s a whole bunch of people who don’t want to touch itâ€.
It also mentioned my favorite thing ever "minimalistic UI." *swoon*
Hmmm, and the lead artist said "Currently thirteen sets of powers are finished" so maybe the 13 set quote from earlier wasn't what would be available at launch but what is available now.
This is all really awesome news. I have a feeling that the Nemesis game play is for PVP. You make a Hero and a Nemesis, the Nemesis fallows you around and tries to undermine everything your doing as a Hero. But on the flip side, you can switch over and play as your Nemesis to PVP against other players. The Nemesis would level up with your character. This would also prevent you from intentionaly gimping your Nemesis, so that his powers are lame, making him easier to fight in PVE. You would wan't him to be built for fighting players in PVP, which in turn would make him better at fighting you in PVE.
But this is just speculation. Though, I could totaly see it working.

That would be pretty smart. It would be kind of like LOTRO's Monster Play, but cooler.
I don't think I posted it but in one of the interviews it was mentioned that player's Nemsis won't just randomly attack them but will sometimes show up to fight players who did not create him. Cryptic said this allows an even wider range of enemies for people to fight that they don't have to put development time into. I hope they keep tracks of stats, I'd like to know how many times Mr. Ice Cream raped faces.

That would be very interesting, hopefully they'll follow through with this plan.
You know what, if the PvP is good and I can maybe take my Nemisis into some story or themed PvP instances with heroes I'd be perfectly fine with all of the PvE being Heroes only for ever. As much as I would like to play a Villain at times it just makes more sense that a villain would be a PvP only character who pops up to mess with heroes.
Oh lord, make special missions that heroes can do where there is a chance a player controlled villain shows up and I'd be all over that. The missions would have to have special rewards to entice Heroes to play them but how awesome would it be to look at a list of missions heroes are doing and jump into one as a villain, stalk them and then beat them down while they try toe defuse a bomb or something.

I always wondered why Mayhems/Safeguards werent small PvP mini-zones. Seems like it would a perfect setup.

One thing I can think of that could make this even more neat would be if nemesi would join together based on common themes in their appearance or their power sets or background info and would form villain groups of their own, and then harrass players and do crimes as a group. Imagine putzing around in one of the common areas one day when the building you're standing near is suddenly gutted by a gigantic explosion and out from the smoke and flames emerges Los Hambre, the dreaded cabel of spanish necromancers and their undead and infernal brain-and-soul-munching minions and partners.
Hopefully they let people know how exactly your going to be playing as your nemesis. If this thread is any indication of the kind of wild speculation going on, it'll be best to stomp the flames before people imaginations get to crazy.

Thought I might just post this for the heck of it, Jack said this on the CO forums yesterday (with regards to an offline character-creator a'la Spore):
"Rest assured, we have heard the suggestion about releasing the character creator. I can't promise anything one way or another, but it is something that we discuss internally."
I can't understand why they wouldn't do that. There is basically nothing they could do that would make me more likely to buy the the game than to let me spend the months prior to it's release making/falling in love with a bunch of superheroes.
Eat it You Nasty Pig. on
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat

EA/Maxis knew that they were going to be putting the creature creator out as a standalone product from the get go I'm sure. With that in mind they were able to build the creator to stand on its own. But with Champions they probably didn't consider putting a character creator out before hand, to hook people in to there game. So they would have to go back and find a way to slice that part of the game out, and make it work with out too many bugs.
It might not be cost effective, or an effective use of there time to put aside people to work on a stand alone character creator. Its not as simple as you might assume it is.

That's the problem. With CoH, if there was a more robust offline costume creator, their subscription numbers would likely plummet. I know several people who play it simply for the "dress-up" potential.

Also, with Spore they released the creature creator to get free content for when the game is released. With Champions, they'd just invest loads of time and money into something that will lose them subscriptions down the line just as likely as it will gain them new players.
There are a few ways Cryptic could go about releasing the character creator. If they wanted, they could release a beta version of the character creator for a couple of months for no fee, then when the game is launched take it down and make it so you needed an active subscription to use it again.
Or, they could release a free "demo" version of the character creator with restricted options. Like, you get all the really cool stuff if you're a subscriber.
Or just sell the character creator right out. If people want to use the character creator without actually playing the game, I wouldn't in the slightest blame Cryptic for charging people for it. Like pay a one-time fee of $30 and you get the character creator but not the actual game. Lah-dee-dah. They could (through micro-transactions) sell to people who only use the character creator new clothing items. Then again we all know how Jack feels about micro-transactions :P
Not saying I prefer any one of those over the other, but they have a lot of options. I'm playing the game anyway, so I could care less what they do
I don't think it would sell very well for 30 dollars.
And didn't the Korean version of CoX have a standalone costume creator? Yes, yes it did. I don't know why but it did and crafty Americans found it, downloaded it, and made it work on US PCs. It quickly became outdated, though.
I would totally play a character creator that let me do nothing but create heroes and villians and let them fight it out in a destructible cityscape of my creation... like a cross of spore, pokemon, and legos.
I playable build will be at PAX and Comic Con. I'm looking forward to reading gameplay impressions. The videos...haven't made me excited for the combat.

It was possible to update it with current files though. Including unlockable stuff I think.
I was going through some old posts on the Champions page, trying to figure out what comic convention near me they were going to be at, when I found this post.
Champions will include a zone that is a dilapidated Wild West theme park where robotic cowboys have turned into killing machines. *swoon*

Not so sure I want player created villains in.

Hell, if any company wanted to plough a bunch of money into making purely a character creator with no game attached I would buy it.
Or, they could release a free "demo" version of the character creator with restricted options. Like, you get all the really cool stuff if you're a subscriber.

Not exactly the masters of suspense, are they?
Has there ever actually been a Star Trek game that's been anything more than just "okay"?

I don't know if it was "great" but I really liked that one FPS way back when.
The two adventure games from Interplay (25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites) were pretty good, if you like adventure games.
I never asked for this!
I thought security staff died all the time, not command?
