I have a 360 - which of the Samurai Warriors/Dynasty Warriors games should I get? I keep reading very contradictory reviews of them - e.g lots of 4/10 scores next to 9/10 scores. Obviously not DW6 from this thread, but I've no idea which of the rest is best.
I live in Japan so I can get any of the different versions - but to confuse things, I know the history of the Japanese civil war, and I'm reading Romance of the Three Kingdoms at the moment (bit long...)
Please help me decide?
If you haven't tried any of the DW/SW games and you're worried abiout those reviews (the games definitely aren't for everyone) then just rent one or get whatever's cheapest first. The only ones I would actively avoid are 6 because it's terrible and 4 because it's boring.
Warriors Orochi is ok. It gives you almost all the characters but it plays a little different from the rest of the series and sometimes feels a little dumbed down to me.
Samurai Warriors 2 is pretty good. Lots to do and the characters are really fun. The Empires game is new to me, I JUST started playing it last night. It feels very different, I'm not sure what to think of it yet but it comes with high praise from the fans so I'm sure it's AT LEAST ok.
I LOVE Gundam the most because flying through those levels is amazingly cool. The "generals" are a lot harder in Gundam then they are in any of the other games tho.
Bladestorm is pretty fun and very different; it's an action stratgey game, there's really no fighting whatsoever as we know it from the DW series but it;s still crazy fun. It's not co-op at all tho which is pretty sad and out of all of them gets repetitive the quickest since you never change characters, you just unlock new troops to use and level up.
Really, you can't go wrong with either Warriors Orochi, Smaurai Warriors 2, Samurai Warriors 2 Empires, Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires or Bladestorm. Just choose whether you want all out smashy smashy or a more strategy and then just pick you genre: China, Japan, Both, Europe or TEH SPACE.
but didnt they take out japanese voices in samurai warriors 2?
that saddened me to the extent that i havent bought it yet.
They took out Japanese voices starting with DW 5 I think and the games are severely lacking because of it. It's the worst decision Koei ever made, even worse then releasing DW6. :P
The English voice acting in DW 3 is so bad that its good. I don't think any of the subsequent games have reached its level of combined awfulness and awesomeness. So many nonsensical lines that my friends and I quote to this very day.
And 6 isn't really that bad. I picked it up and have been enjoying it so far.

You are wrong. Your enjoyment is totally fake also what system are you playing it on.
The Empires games have some atrociously bad voice acting but the mainstream games seem pretty average.
Except for the gay French barkeep in Bladestorm. HOOOOO that's some strong cheese.
I bought it for 360, since even a meh DW game is still fun to me.
Honestly, the only thing that annoys me right now is the massive phasing when you fight near your main force. Lu Bu phasing in behind you to one shot you is NOT cool.
Yeah, that was happening constantly for me too. We play the DW games 2 players almost all the time and the game is literally unplayable in 2 player because of the all the pop in. On of us would run up to a group of 2 or 3 generals and suddenly everyone would vanish. After a wait of close to a minute, they'd all pop in again, ALWAYS directly behind the player and in the middle of a musou or combo. It was just ridiculous.
When I first started playing it, I absolutely hated it. I thought the new battle system was terrible. However after playing through it a bit more, I like it just as much as any other iteration of the game. DW6 is probably the hardest DW I have played as well. Bosses counter all the time and do rediculous amounts of damage at high difficulty levels. Also I like how snagging guard towers allows archers to rain arrows down. It is especially helpful when fighting a general.
If you start playing it and don't like it, give it some time and crank up the difficulty.

I have no problem with the gameplay. I liked it. It was DW with a spin. It was the technology that failed.
If there was that much phasing in the other games I never noticed it. I saw it constantly in 3 and I notice it every so often in Orochi. But never to the constant extent it was doing in 6.

I'm fairly certain that the barkeep is Spanish and speaking with a Castilian accent, hence his interesting pronunciation.
I once had a Spanish teacher with the very same accent.

Most of my experience with the series was 2 and 3, so I'm kind of used to it. You also don't see the game stopping slowdown of those games. There was far less in 5, though.
Its definitely a problem, but its not a game breaker to me.
Also, Bladestorm: is it an action or strategy game? I just blew 120 bucks on 360 games so I won't be getting a new one soon, but it looks interesting.

Yeah, Orochi had a lot of slowdown too. I'm starting to think they did Orochi just as a pre-game to DW6 and didn't actually learn what they needed to from it.
Bladestorm: Think DW but instead of a character equipped with a weapon you play a general who "equips" an entire troop of soldiers. The combos and attacking are gone, you run around the European countryside and just hold down a button and everyone attacks. All the troops types are levelled up seperately and all have 3 special abilities they can use as well.

i dont know if it was 3, but i will admit that in one of the dw's meng huo's wife would say "that oughta learn ya'" in this hickish accent after she kills any general and that would totally make my day.
any awesome lines in sw2? maybe i will get the english version. hahahaha.
Holy shit, I just got my promo copy of DW6 UK release and this camera is fucking horrible. Also wtf at playing on Normal and Lu Bu killing me in two hits.
Isn't Lu Bu supposed to be nearly impossible to beat? I remember taking him on in the earlier DW games basically amounted to suicide, unless your timing was really consistent. I don't think this is something new.

I tried the Bladestorm demo on the recommendation in this thread, and set out to find the retail game. What a pain in the ass title to find. Was it a limited run or something?
I really thought this was a pretty good edition to the Dynasty Warriors series.
What really did it for me is that there's no apparent slowdown (unless you get a lot of guys on screen at once) when compared to the PS2 editions.
I also really appreciated some much needed character redesign. Sun Jian, Zhang Liao, Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, and Liu Bei all look a lot less generic than they had in the prior editions. Their weapons also became much more diverse instead of having 9 generals just using a variation of the one handed sword. Liu Bei, for instance, plays more like Lu Xun from 2-5 with a wider sweep. Zhou Yu uses a staff now instead of a sword and feels a lot less like a pansy. Basically there's a much greater difference between playable officers and the generic general types.
I loved the skill tree and watching the characters actually swing their weapon with a little variation (love Zhao Yun's spear animations) was a much needed inprovement.
There are a few things that I don't quite understand. While they brought back the Musou Character specific "battle/story arc" from...3? 4? I can't recall....anyway, there's only about 20 or so characters with an actual Musou mode. Some characters like Yuan Shao, Zhang He, etc. etc. are only available in free mode.
Also removing Jiang Wei altogether? Seriously? He was in Dynasty Warriors Two. Also the lack of any new officers was extremely disappointing.
I was thinking about trying this out, but the negative reviews, combined with the fact that I'll have Brawl in a week and won't want to do much else once that happens, means there isn't much reason to do so.
I did just get Dynasty Warriors: Gundam recently though, and even though there's still aspects that I like about it, the combat seems a little more boring than the Samurai Warriors series and the difficulty seems off to me---like, I actually found it still a bit difficult on Easy, and I'm not exactly unfamiliar with these games.
I had some Best Buy bucks and decided to pick this up for PS3. I've dabbled in Dynasty Warriors before, but I'm not a hardcore fan. I like that it has an install. Loads are quick, framerate rarely drops. The camera is a little messed up, only because it's hyper sensitive to the right analog stick.
I'm enjoying it quite a bit though. The new combat system is cool.
Basically, I respectfully disagree with the thread title. I can see how it's not for everyone though, and I can see how the changes might irritate hardcore DW fans.

I'm not planning to pick this up, but I'm wondering: Does the game still boot you to the main menu if you lose a mission in Musou mode? I played DW5 recently, and it mystifies me that, 5+ iterations in, Koei hasn't seen any need for a "Retry mission" option to jump right back in instead of going Musou Mode -> Load Game -> pre-briefing -> briefing -> battle setup -> re-adjust preparation options -> start mission.
It just baffles me every time I see the game over screen. It's as if the designers are thinking, "Well, the player lost, so he's probably had it for the day and wants to play something else now."

Yes it does. And honestly, when I lose a battle, I take a break. They are really long and its frustrating sometimes.

What!
Zhou Yu is like, my goddamned guy. Is the staff change awesome or unawesome?
He's pretty badass and can clear a room. Basically just think of Kilik from Soul Calibur and you'll get the general idea of how Zhou Yu fights.
Oh man, that sounds absolutely wonderful. He already had crazy crowd control in previous iterations.

Its from my all time favourite RPG, Shattered Lands.
On the subject of Jiang Wei. I never used him, his design was lacking, and he really won't be missed.
Some of the new weapons are kind of stupid though. Dual Wielding on a character I actually like, Zhang Liao, pisses me off, as its retarded.
Sun Shang Xiang's change is awesome. Machine gunning archer is fun as hell to play.
I particularly like how the voice acting now articulates that Cao Cao is not pronounced "cow cow". Tsao Tsao.
It just baffles me every time I see the game over screen. It's as if the designers are thinking, "Well, the player lost, so he's probably had it for the day and wants to play something else now."

I just can't believe it took em this long to get that right.
I do have the bad habit of running up in peoples faces before attacking tho.
