It was better on the PS3? From what I heard, the PSN player base was smaller than XBL.

Perhaps the playerbase was there, but the certification requirements on XBL caused the devs to not push any patches through to the 360.
That meant a lot of things stayed broken, including that you couldn't assign button configurations. That meant that when you plugged in a joystick, and they had accidentally left out the brake button? You just had no way of braking. Also factor in some awful handling characteristics due to weird design decisions or bugs that they also didn't patch out and some of the best planes featured in the game are left a shell of themselves.
The biggest advantage from the very get go on the PS3 though is that you can take any retail PC joystick and plug it in just fine. Meanwhile the 360 had that crappy Saitek or you'd shell out a good chunk of change for the AC6 joystick.
EDIT: Oh, I just remembered that the control config issue also meant that the practically-standard configuration of Yaw/Throttle Right-Stick and Roll/Pitch left-stick wouldn't be allowed, since they had shipped with Yaw/Pitch left-stick and Roll/Throttle right-stick.
I didn't buy the game because, to be honest, it was a really big disappointment (so was Wings of Prey, which my dad picked up, though it was slightly less of a disappointment). I didn't really mind, but it's unfortunate, given how few attempts at flight simulations we get on consoles.
The funny thing is in the last shot, it looks like a wingman stole the kill from the player. It banks in from way off screen.
I always like that even in AC4 wingmen would fly around and attack targets. On Megalith, I even failed getting an S a few times because they shot down too many Yellows.
Yeah, it's hard to say for certain, but if we're going off earlier AC games, I'd totally take a soundtrack (even if it was, in all likelihood, an "incomplete" soundtrack) over a Phantom II.

1) TU-160 is in the game, which is really nice. I hope it's sort of a mid-level boss, rather than just something you shoot down waves and waves of, but either way, it's good.
2) On the other side, apparently, you will have some control in a B-1B? That's cool--not as cool as controlling the TU-160, but that makes sense in terms of the story.
Some of the ground textures were also a bit weak, but that's common in flight games.
You are forgiven my son, though in pennance you must shoot down Pixy five times with the music turned off.
But damn, I'm seriously considering going media blackout from here out. I don't really see how that trailer can be topped.
I think I'll just commit ceremonial suicide. Less painful.
I wasn't that impressed by the trailer--I mean, it seemed like a lot of show, not much substance (it's a trailer, what do I expect?). I'll watch it again, see if there's more to it.
The ground textures were kind of....meh. Especially in Washington. So, like every other flying game ever.
EDIT: Going by the trailer, actually, it looks like the "plot" goes from "hunting down the Shark and his rogue squadron" to "destroying the whole Russian Air Force" or "it's Tuesday, which means its trash day and war with Russia." Which is pretty much what I expected, since Namco is chasing that sweet, sweet Ruskie-hunting Modern-Warfaring Tom-Clancy cash. Given this is Project Aces, we'll probably be something in the style of a false flag operation that turns all your Russian allies against you, complete with the prerequisite blonde white Russian pilot/potential love interest having to make some tough decisions, etc.
Honestly, Namco is not capable of making "rogue squadron of Sukhois led by an evil, mustache-twirling Slavic ace", by itself, grandoise and powerful enough to be the entirety of the plot, nor would they want to.
Some companies are. Eagle Dynamics could totally fucking do that. Or Gaijin Entertainment. Namco? Yeah, no. That would be like them coming up with a plot for Soulcalibur that doesn't suck or involve weapons-grade breast physics. I don't think they could do it and be pleased with the final product. Ace Combat is not about subtlty, clandestine intrigue, hidden convictions, etc. It is about shit exploding in your face and threatening the whole goddamn world.
I'm not saying one of these things is better than the other. I liked Captain Hamilton's quiet conspiracy in Ace Combat 5, and I like the SOLG plummeting into Oured and threatening to turn the whole city into a goddamn crater. But one of these things is much more Namco/Project Aces than the other. One rogue pilot who is inspiring (and well-written) enough to lead his comrades in a war against their own country and the world, and brilliant enough to pull it off? Not really their shtick.
One rogue pilot somehow managing to hijack half the government of the goddamn Russian Federation and the Collective Security Treaty Organization countries? That's more their style.
It makes as much sense as Pixy going from wingman to terrorist mastermind in the span of about three missions.
I agree story is important, but AC4 had an extremely thin plot as well. It was the atmosphere that was important, even though the narrator wasn't capable of expression a single emotion beyond dull surprise.
There's literally nothing beyond 13's character (compared to Markov so far) other than he's a chivalrous enemy ace who doesn't like to see civilians get hurt. That's it. He doesn't even have any dialog with Mobius 1.
Which is exactly what Project Aces is capable of doing. Subtlty and good writing would get in their way of F-22s saving babies while firing a TV-guided missile in to the Kremlin Senate and playing extreme guitar rifts. Assuming they could be subtle for any length of time (they can't really).
To be fair, concocting a sort of subtle, deep conflict and plot that is as much about morality, philosophy, and political history as it is about blowing up faux-communists is not just difficult (and beyond Namco's capabilities), a lot of people just wouldn't like it. If you could make Stand Alone Complex: 2nd GIG, with aircraft pilots with deep, substantial pilots being forced to confront their own political indoctrination and sense of morality, and make it work, it'd be my Game of Forever, but that's definitely not for everyone. A lot of people would go, "What the fuck are these mass hysteria theories, debates about political relevance and the legacy of imperialism and the world capitalist system doing in my game? I want to blow some shit up!" AC's fans, understandably, lean more towards Michael Bay/TTGL with jet fighters.
Hence, my worry--AC plots have never impressed me, but the creativity of setting has, so we'll see where it goes with this one. Aside from the ground textures (a painful problem in flight games as a whole), the visuals look pretty damn good thusfar, and the soundtrack is steadily growing on me.

Is Kobayashi doing the music again?
Also, the final battle of Zero, epic music or not, was a pain in the neck.
Amazing song though.
You've got a fraternity hazing party worth of games where America goes to war with Russia, but never do the games mention Russia's two closest military allies: Armenia and Belarus.
It's not just an alliance--it's a status like that between the militaries of Canada and the US, in which their command structures are largely integrated, or Japan and the US, in which one country's constitution has specific terms concerning the more powerful country's resident troops. And then you've got a bunch of historical and cultural ties as well.
If America went to war with Russia, Armenia and Belarus would on be at war with America. There's be pretty much no alternative--it'd be like NATO trying to go to war without Germany and the United States.
Unfortunately, Armenia usually doesn't get mentioned even in Russian wargames, as the Armenian Air Force is pretty much focused entirely on close-air support. Still, I can dream.
Dat music. It sounds very Ace Combat 6ish at times. It almost sounded like there were hints of Liberation of Gracemeria in there, and that's not a bad thing.
EDIT: The gameplay looks to be largely automatic and that makes me a sad panda. The dogfight mode looks like ridiculous levels of ez mode from what I can tell.
Actually, it takes longer on average now to down individual planes than in prior games, even with CRA. The AI jukes quite a bit harder, especially Aces, and they can use counter measures.
Also, that's the tutorial mission you're looking at, in AC4, all you did was fly forward and shoot down six sitting ducks.

It lists a collector's edition that comes with the soundtrack, and to pre-order on acecombat.com. The site links to retailers who have no collector's edition listed. Ok...

The lack of support for that was really disappointing.

Though I guess they have to offer something to get people in Europe to buy at full MSRP due to the whole Euro != USD thing.
Is it wrong that the soundtrack is my most anticipated feature for the game?

I could do without the helicopter stuff.
Also, I finally got AC0 a week back. Dang was it great.
But that trailer
Goddamn
I actually did not notice that...that what I get for multitasking.
(I've just lost major cred with the Man w/ MG).
