Cougar would be a possibility, I just didn't think more first-gen fighters were needed in my list since they would probably only function as starter planes to get you through the first few missions in this theorycrafted game... unless there were specific missions which required carrier aircraft maybe.
I think they should have waited on giving me the f-22 until after the mission where I fight all the elite pilots flying su-47s. Also, I find the in game description of the f-35 completely hilarious.
Yay, I finished the game. Now to go through and get all the extras.
(Re)playing the series has really made me sad that they've moved away from Strangereal as a setting. They really put a lot of work into the backstory of these games and their world, only to start basing new games in the real world or ur-Strangereal. Why would they do that?

Because despite having a long running series of games that their fans adore they felt the need to get some of that tacti-cool CODkid cash. The logic is pretty damn baffling tbh because even at its worst, AC was still pretty fucking great and afaik maintained solid sales. It almost feels like there was a management change now that I'm thinking about it.

I wonder... how did AC6 sell on the 360?
Compared to the PS2 games. Was there a change then if AC6 was perceived as a failure?
I don't know if they've ever released sales figures for it, but my guess would be that it didn't sell very well in japan, because xbox. I haven't played 6 myself, so I don't know if there's anything actually wrong with it, like there is with assault horizon.

They've also exhausted most of the Strangereal world map. I went over it a page or two ago but they're simply running out of nations with anti-Ulysses superweapons and a desire to use said weapons in military action against their neighbors. This leaves three options: forward in the timeline (ACX in 2020 was a pretty good step but there's still 20 years until Electrosphere), backwards in the timeline (there's still space in the 1990s and early 2000s but there's also room for the century series and other Cold War-era stuff) or somewhere completely different. Namco have simply chosen the "somewhere else" path by using our world.

The only problem with 6 was the dialogue. The actual gameplay was pretty fun and the variable missions were a neat mechanic.

Or just let one of those superweapons loose and let us fight in post-apoc Strangereal.
To be fair, It's not like the dialogue in 5 is perfect either. Nagase's lines in the beginning felt especially cheesy.

Yeah but AC 6 loved beating you in the head with, "Go dance with the angels! Go dance with the angels!" Nagase had some cheesy lines, in fact all the characters do. But they have so much personality that it's not irritating.
I mean hell, I still remember when I was flying in that snowstorm on the mission to rescue Nagase. You're following the beacon until it gets faster and she's saying "I can hear jet engines over me." Etc. Then finally "BLAZE!" and it's like F-- YEAH I FOUND HER! Let's get this rescue going!
None of the missions in Liberation or Assault Horizon had this same kind of creativity. They just turned it all into a kill fest for the most points. Zero was a start in this direction, but at least it had some interesting game mechanics to make you see different cut scenes.
I haven't played zero yet, it's next on my list (if I can find my damn disk anyways). The thing about 5 is that the dialogue gets progressively better and that helps you forget how bad and annoying it is in the first third of the game. IE:
I didn't realize how annoying Chopper was until I started the NG+ and had to deal with him asking me stupid fucking questions whenever I'm trying to outmaneuver an enemy jet again. I was surprised/horrified when initial thought was actually "I'm glad you're going to die soon". Nagase's dialogue doesn't really change at all over the course of the story, but it stops being awkward and over invested once all the pilots actually know each other.
That being said, I do think that the camaraderie between the Razgriz pilots is one of the few things that 5 has that's an improvement over 4.
If I can't find my zero disk soon, I'll prolly do assault horizon legacy next. I wonder how they did the rudder controls on the 3ds though.

In case anyone hasn't heard, Assault Horizon is currently on sale on Steam for $4.99; more importantly, they're offering a free weekend. Just finished the intro missions (up through the credits) and yeah, it was pretty fun, but it kind of reminded me how what I really, really want is just an uprezzed AC2.

Assault Horizon is a totally competent flying game with a batshit crazy story.

AC5 also had the good wherewithal to stay the hell away from children as a plot device (as did Zero).
I had a 1:72 scale model of a MiG-23 many years ago. Yes, kind of boxy but I still liked the variable wings.
And at this point I'm giving up on the PC version (unless anyone has any advice) -- the first couple of missions (Miami and the helicopter) played fine, but then my frame rates started going to hell. I watch it on FRAPS and it looks like a sawtooth -- goes up to 60, plateaus there for a few seconds, then drops to zero, hangs there for a few seconds, then back up to 60. It's even doing this in the menu screens. I can't imagine it's a hardware issue -- I've tried several other, much more demanding games and they all ran smooth as butter. Just glad I didn't drop $5 before the game started going wonky on me.
Maybe it's time to fire up the PS3 and dig my AC2 disc out of the stack.
The MiG-23 is the fighter and the 27 is the Attack craft, right?
Yes, ground attack. Basically, in the Soviet VVS (and this is still true), odd numbers were fighters, even numbers were bombers. There was a tendency to use existing successful airframes, and improve upon them, as part of modernization (this is true in the west as well). The MiG-25 was a recon aircraft and interceptor, and led to the MiG-31 which was a strict supersonic interceptor (and basically a monstrously heavy, fast aircraft). The MiG-23 was seen as more useful in the ground attack role, so the MiG-27 was designed with that strictly in mind (with much higher levels of protection, particularly for the cockpit, and different weapons). It kept the swept wings, but the popularity of the Su-25 meant it didn't see as much use as its predecessor.
Gaslight, you had me, given my constant rallying for a 2nd Gen AC game in Strangereal Vietnam.
Than you implied the MiG-23 isn't a badass-looking, swept-wing nightmare knife cutting through the sky.
I don't even know you, man.
Where did I imply that? I passed no judgment on the MiG-23's looks at all, I just included it in my lineup of examples of diversity in aircraft aesthetics from the 50's through the early 70's.

Too late! The damage has been done!
I know, I was just enjoying the whole "OLD PLANES ARE UGLY" diatribe, even though some, like the Sabre and the MiG-15 are kind of ugly in my mind.
Also if you're flying Eastern Bloc planes and you're not in an SU27, you done fucked up son.
Phhhhhbbb. Whatever. Let's see your Su-27 hit Mach 2.8 while armed.
Actually, the Sukhoi's rockstar reputation isn't undeserved, and the Berkhut is still the sexiest technology demonstrator out there, bar none, but there's something to be said about the fastest interceptor still in service weighing in at almost two Su-27s...

Canards aside, that livery (paint scheme?) isn't doing it any favors.

I love that paint scheme, it's very patriotic and USA. I love being an American.

And that's a completely legitimate position to take.
I'm just not impressed by that paint scheme. It's very Égalité, and very French, since it's their flag and all. I'm not an American, and thus do not feel any particular way to being one. Nor am I French, but I do have a great deal of respect for French contributions to philosophy and civil legal traditions--to me, that belongs on a Rafale, not an Eagle.
It's Ace Combat, we're not getting the XB-70 for the same reason we're not getting a B-1B or a Tu-22M: no large bombers. We have to settle for being able to shoot them down.
As for the Tu-160, that's just too much plane for the player to handle.

This game definitely needs a graphical tune up though wonder if they'll release it on ps4?

not really.
the MiG-25/31 is hilariously huge. And it's basically a gigantic pair of engines with F-15 wings.
Whereas the F-15 is a huge pair of wings with a couple of big-ass engines stuffed in the middle.
