From what you say, I would think that in harder difficulties it is easier because your teammates don't pull their weight as much, so you get the chance to do those things yourself.

You're more likely to miss the other criteria though--most obviously, be shot down, or miss a particular enemy unit that needs to be killed for a "ACE" to spawn--on higher difficulties. It's also possible they actually present a threat on higher difficulties because AC scales difficulty by making you more vulnerable to weapons fire, not actually making enemy pilots any better, but that doesn't seem that likely. And you're a lot more likely to be screwed because the spawning criteria is bullshit in general then because of any individual factor, like your teammates shooting down enough targets to keep you from reaching the score requirement in x minutes.

Finally did the first DLC mission yesterday after picking up the season pass a couple weeks ago. By golly, that certainly is a target-rich environment. Great music and villains, too.

Just tried out using one of the DLC planes. It was very fast, which I appreciated. It also had UAV's it's plane-exclusive weapon. They were alright, but I don't think they did enough for me to take over other loadouts. Maybe they're more of a niche thing and I just didn't use them in the right situation. Also finally tried using the TLS laser as my special weapon (I pretty much only ever use AA missiles or bombs), and it seemed alright? It's hard to get it on target and doesn't really seem to do enough damage when you finally get it on target. They were kinda useful for shooting down bombers that were moving perpendicular to me, though. Oh, it also has some sort of laser machine gun instead of the normal one that did way more damage. I quite liked it!

I tried one of the lasers, don't remember which one, for a ground assault mission and it was fantastic, the longer range meant that you could take out groups of targets while still flying at safe speeds and distances.

This one only had a range of like 5000, I think. I didn't use any upgrade parts for it, though, so maybe that makes it better.

Of all the nameless protags, Mobius is the one I hope they keep hidden in mystery for that reason. We never get a hint of what he's like. Only his reputation in the eyes of others. They took that theme and ran with it in Zero, giving the player a chance to give their avatar some character. But Mobius? He's just the best, period. Not even Cipher had his rep.

That ties in with the DLC storyline too of finding "Singularities" these exception individuals on which whole wars turn.

And yes, playing through the DLC for the first time. That soundtrack!
I also really like Huxian, Count, Wiseman, none of them grated on me the way the AC5 cast did at times. They seemed more like scrappy fighters rather than misplaced poets or dreamers.

You know, it took nearly 3 missions before I realized that Long Caster was on the AWACS.... I also discovered that playing Multiplayer is funny being the guy flying the worst plane in the group and getting 50k per mission of just dodging missiles. Did that for a while to grind up money to buy better planes. Now I have the F-35 and F-22... Just need to grind more to get the 23 and all of the Russian models next. I hate those drone planes... Although one match a guy in an A-10 killed everybody and got first place.

Edit: That A-10 match was one without special weapons.

Assault Horizon's soundtrack is definitely banger. Lots of heavy metal guitar riffs make it super enjoyable. Definitely a different take than the other ace combats, gameplay notwithstanding, but I like the branch out music-wise at least.

I had very low expectations going into it, as Tom Clancy's Combat of Duty: Aces Wild. Said expectations were thoroughly proven when I actually played the game.

I have no problem with people enjoying it, or any other game I don't like. But I think it's pretty telling that the game's own named sequel, Assault Horizon Legacy, doesn't continue the setting, and as far as I know nothing else does either. On top of everyone apparently hating it's defining gameplay addition (no, not an evil Russian dude, people love that)--mandatory Dogfight Mode.

Don't go full Tom Clancy. You never go full Tom Clancy.

    EDIT: OST's OK though.

It's fine, but I don't think it comes close to as good as a proper Ace Combat game. I think that's where the disappointment comes from. Ace Combat 7 was a good reminder of just how good one of those can be.

Ace Combat is literally Tom Clancy with anime.
AC5, and by extension 0 is Sum of All Fears, and of course the AC7 DLC is Hunt For Red October.
Mind you I'm not arguing AH is where I wanted the series to go, but I find it funny nonetheless.

Especially this one, out of all of AH's tracks I sincerely wish I could splice in this song for some of Mobius 1s famous missions, or the AC7 DLC Mission for Anchorhead Bay. Seriously wicked track.

Could someone try and break down if the DLC is any different than the main mission design? I'm slightly curious just because, but how much I've hated the design of the majority of missions also leaves me beyond wary. Is it just another set of "Hey, be ready to engage ground/air/naval targets along with a hyper-agile ace fight or tight-timer drone-swarm" or do they do something interesting with them? :/

I'm glad you guys are still enjoying it. I really wish I could have, but I'll still be on board for at least the next game that comes out (if it ever sees the light of day).

I'll spoil the DLC for you here but you're kinda close to the mark:

1st Mission - 90% Air-to-Air with very few ground targets. You're going to be up against wave after wave of various fighters and ground attack craft while escorting an attack fleet. Additionally you're going to have a pair of Growlers with you that if you fly in their range, will super-charge your missile performance to ludicrous degrees (lock on, mobility, damage etc) so you'll want to stick close to them and protect them in order to maximize your effectiveness during the mission. The mission finishes with you having to face off against a pair of Su-47s aces that are running active ECM pods so you'll have to get in close and take your time locking on your missiles or use dummy fire weapons like your machineguns, PSLs, EMLs or drones etc. They have insane mobility and you'll be going up against a pair of them so definitely pick a highly agile fighter to go up against them.

2nd - Mission - This is a heavy ground attack mission. You're basically taking out a massive harbor navy complex that's split into two major areas. I'd say this fight is split about 70/30 Ground vs aerial targets. A large chunk of targets are ships so anti ship missiles may be worth it hear to take out the chonkier battle cruisers or carriers, or use an upgraded PSL weapon to cut through them. You'll primarily be trying to attack ground targets with sporadic waves of planes and drones messing with you more and more as the mission drags on. Unfortunately this mission again pulls an AC7 fast one on you and you'll have to face off against those two SU-47 berkut aces again at the end of the mission. Thankfully this mission has 3 supply lines you can return to so make sure to pick a plane that has both air and ground 2ndaries so you can swap multiple times during the mission. The Su-47s are again insanely agile and use super homing missiles along with the added bonus of the main villain firing airburst missles like Stonehenge throughout the dogfight between the two Su-47s where you have to shoot down a drone that's acting as the targeting pod for the airburst. So again, high mobility/speed plane is a must for this mission. Thankfully you will kill both aces in this mission so you won't face them again.

3rd - Mission - Here you're finally hunting that damn sub. Starts off as pure aerial where you're escorting sonobuoy planes trying to track the sub, but you'll be assaulted by waves of advanced drones and SU-30s that fly even better than anything you've faced so far aside from Mr X. Once you deal with this and force the sub to surface it's a pure ground attack game, but the hardpoints on the sub are reinforced so you'll need really heavy hitting ground weaponry like anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles or burst missiles to really quickly damage the hardpoints on the sub as smaller bombs like the ones on the F-22 do not do enough damage to destroy the targets without repeated strikes. This is by far the most intense mission of the three as you'll need a highly agile plane to deal with the fighter escorts, but one that has the ability to carry hard hitting secondaries to deal with the hardpoints on the sub.

Overall I ended up using the Su-57 for the first two (also experimented with the X-02 using the anti ship missiles to good effect for the 2nd mission, and the ADF-11 Raven for the first) as the PSL is phenomenal at both anti ground and anti ship combat when fully upgraded (you can start hitting targets at over 4km with it so it's great). For the third mission I've tried a variety of planes with middling results. I can't get above a B rank in that mission no matter what I do so I'm obviously doing something wrong, but the SU-57 and the ADX-Morgan using burst missiles seemed to work best for me overall.

Ace combat 7 is the most difficult Ace combat to date playing through casually. But it's certainly not the most simple in terms of mission structure.
Another cool detail, during Stonehenge defense, you can see allied tanks and rocket batteries destroy advancing enemy units. It's also really hard to see on one playthrough, but your wingman will destroy other targets while you're off dealing with threats on the other side of the map.
There's also a ton of specific parameter dialogue triggers during the DLCs. Like, almost a half hour worth of variations. Enemy dialogue changes based on what sub weapons you use, what targets you destroy, and how fast you do it.

So I just finished AC7 last night and I have to say...
Man I hate drones!!!! The annoying painful Arsenal Bird missions are so painful. Then they have you fight bot one, but two super drones that become two more super drones. I'm thankful they put in cannon fodder to allow you to get some shots off and luckily I managed to grind for the F-22. But that last mission of drive through the tunnel can just die. I swear they love one upping the Trench Run in every AC. Then the Force Awakens shoot the walls and fine the opening to escape sucked!!! I did love the story and the ending. I know that Trigger was the main character, but I sort of wished I could end it with the Lady from the beginning. Plus I hate that they killed the dog.

Yeah I saw that they fight like Mihaly, which makes sense since they are the ones with his flight data uploaded into them. I guess in one way they are at least not as bad as fighting Mihaly himself. Oh and I liked how he lived in the end! Even though he was moping about, he really needed to grow and learn how to "fly" but on the ground.

One question I had near the end. Was the grounded aircraft carrier named after a reference to an older AC?

The drone designs were definitely cool and their sound effects.

I will admit even with their psychotic personalities, I did feel a bit bad shooting them down. Part of that is most of the enemy squadrons react like trained professionals in the moment. These pilots freak out when you shoot one down, and it even affects the soundtrack!
Tough break, but there are only three kinds of aces.

It's especially nice in the DLC missions as if you're aggressively destroying targets early on, the enemy radio chatter from the ground forces start becoming more and more hysterical as you've basically wiped out an entire squadron of boats in just a few minutes.

Woo, finished my replay of the base campaign! Got all the Aces! They really weren't too bad to get! A couple of em I had to restart a couple times for, but it didn't bother me cause I was having fun going for the challenge. I think the ones I had to restart the most were the one where you have to stay under the cloud cover, the naval platform mission, the canyon run, and the castle approach mission.

Now I'm ready to give the DLC missions a spin :D Probably on Wednesday!
