Driving miss geforce (SOLVED)

I'm currently experiencing a very weird issue with my videocard. I've got an XFX 256mb 6600 GT, worked fine ever since I got it. I recently reformatted (XP), and now I can't get the drivers to work.

The only ones that display correctly are the forceware drivers that came with the card. 66.83 or something, not completely sure which one it is. It's old. Before my format, the newer drivers worked fine. On ubuntu, my card works fine. Now when I install newer forceware drivers (163.75/169.21) they don't display correctly. The system says the drivers are working, yet I can't go over 640*480 with 4-bit colours.

I managed to get the 169.21 drivers working once, by turning down hardware acceleration. However, I have been unable to replicate this feat since, guh.

Does anyone have a clue about what might be up? Else I'm probably going to format again this weekend, with a different disc, but damnit, that's such a hasstle.

--EDIT: Don't feel like necroing the thread. Got it all worked out, ended up formatting again with a different disc. I guess my install disc was corrupted or something, everything works perfectly now. Weird.

did u reformat to SP2? It could be the drivers interacting badly with SP1.

Yeah, I would update Windows completely, including SP2, then completely uninstall the card (so it goes back to "Default VGA" or whatever it is), then reinstall the latest Forceware drivers.

Failing that...Hard to say what it is exactly, but I doubt it's anything that another wipe of XP will solve if it didn't work the first time.

I would consider getting a new card, also, as a 6600 is pretty out of date at the moment....You can get a 7600 GS AGP for about $85+ shipping on Newegg if you don't have a PCI Express slot, or (for example) an XFX 8600GT for about $75 after rebate if you do.

I'm already on SP2 with all the updates, and have tried un/re-installing the card. No go.

I know my card is kind of shitty, I'm going to build a completely new rig sometime in the summer. I just want this thing to hang on for a few months more.
