I'll second Jagged Alliance 2. It doesn't have have Silent Storm's destructible environments (although you can destroy some walls with explosives I suppose, it's not really something you'll be doing frequently, like in SS), but on the whole I 'd say the gameplay has a bit more depth to it.

There've been tonnes of "UFO: Alien something" games but I've never tried them so I don't know how good they are.

There's a remake or two of X-Com as well (freeware), that might be interesting.

Also, there was recently a freeware "Space Hulk" game released, and I'm actually enjoying that quite a bit, alothough it's not quite the squad level combat you're thinking of.

    EDIT: Space Hulk link:

Urgh, it's a shame. I've tried X-Com: UFO Defense which is freeware but haven't got it running because of a mere drivers issue, there's not even a solution, it's a shame really, I've been reading about the series for the past hours and now I can't play.

    Any other suggestions? :(

X-COM is still your best bet, and the UFO: somethings are just a waste of time. (Believe me.)

I believe Operation Darkness is a Japanese take on the Silent Storm kind of game, but I think it's for the 360. Personally, I just replay Silent Storm again when I get the urge.

Some of the remakes of X-Com are freeware. But there are a good number of them and they often are still releasing new beta versions so I don't really keep track of them.

Compared to Silent Storm, JA2 is much more strategic and has downplayed RPG elements, X-Com/UFO Defense is far more strategically and tactically focus with far fewer RPG elements (your troops are damn expendable in the first two), and Fallout Tactics has more RPG elements and looser strategy (no blowing up terrain, even with explosives).

They're pretty much the big 3 names in the genre beyond Silent Storm.

Hmm, what are the differences between Fallout and the Tactics sequel? Isn't Fallout already "tactical" enough?

Have you tried DOSbox? I know it was either that or some other DOS emulator thingy that let me run X-Com perfectly. Even had it's own preset config for the game.

The Commandos series is pretty similar...

    ...also extremely hard.

Tactics isn't really a sequel. It plays quite different.

There's more meaningful cover instead of occasional doorways you can duck behind.

You have control over all 6 characters in your squad.

Called shots are nerfed so those 6 characters don't become an eye-shot extermination squad.

Small arms have their AP costs reduced to 4 so you don't NEED 10 agility anymore to be able to fire most weapons twice in a round.

Lots more weapons and more ammo types for those.

Armor can affect stealth and other skills negatively.

Doctor and first aid are a lot more useful, restoring health fully. Stimpacks are nerfed in that you can't use them one after another in the inventory screen.

Maps are A LOT bigger and can have multiple stories. There's also rarely meaningful diplomacy, though stealth approaches are still useable.

The last one is the big change to the feel of the game IMO. You're not going out questing, you're being dropped into combat zones and fighting your way through.

UFO: Extraterrestrials is a different series than the other UFO: Something games, and much better; its actually TBS like X-Com, and with Bman's mod plays very similar.

Just get Jagged Alliance 2, it's the closest thing to Silent Storm (well, actually XCOM might be closer considering Silent Storm's shitty interface) and it's also a better game.

I honestly never thought about the differences in combat between the games. Thanks for the summary.

I just finished Jagged Alliance 2. I like it overall more than Silent Storm, but I appreciated that in SS everyone had a defined role early in the game. In JA2, I didn't specialize much until the late game when machineguns, mortars, and good silenced rifles became available. Also, the graphics are much easier on the eyes in Silent Storm. I don't remember the interface, but I found JA2's pretty annoying for grind work. When you play the game for 6 straight hours, things can get a little annoying.
