I'd rather pay a monthly fee then have 100 person capped servers. I don't get all the hate for monthly fees, you're supporting the creative forces behind the game you're enjoying so much while they create more content for you.
The thing with the 100 players/server thing makes me wonder if this might not go the way of Freelancer or Ultima Online or something like that whereas you've got official servers that you pay to use but which'll have guarenteed high speeds or exclusive content or dedicated professional maintainance or something nice and snazzy, and then you've got individual private ones where anything goes. Not to mention that with that number they're going to need a fuckload of servers, which seems kind of odd for an MMO game.
EDIT: It just hit me that we really don't know know how the punishment side of Enforcement is going to work. Is it going to be like the GTA Busted/Wasted thing where you emerge from outside the nearest PD with your guns and some of your money lost, or could they actually impliment some kind of trial and imprisonment/hard labor system (with jailbreaks, hopefully)? And how would they keep sore assholes from just logging when shit hits the fan, even with delays and such?
I was thinking that, but since the game's all skill-driven with none of the automation from your contemporary MMO the devs might figure that it'd have a hell of a lot more load per player.
That brings up the problem of getting into instances with all of your friends and stuff. Hopefully they'll have a good system to ensure that everybody who's part of a group gets pulled into the sae instance (maybe set group size limits at 50 and automatically pull characters to the instance with the highest number of group members in it?).
I know it was announced like a year and a half ago, or two years ago, I think. The first I've heard about it, Crackdown wasn't even out yet.
Yeah, this has actually been bouncing around for a good while. It's been a long time since we really heard anything on it though. It looks like they're ramping up the pre-launch marketing machine now, so info should be more frequently released.
It really looks like they're getting close to finished, it's probably down to working out the kinks of whatever they've decided to do for the server setup. I hope they do release some more concrete info on that. I'd like to know what kinds of population sizes we're going to be seeing.
The 100 players per server is outdated information from an old build years ago. Why are people still discussing it?
Because the 100 players per server information was mentioned in the recent GDC videos. He explicitly said this. Go back and watch them again, but turn up your volume and listen carefully, because it's hard to hear his voice through most of the footage.

Presumably there'll be a character sharing feature. Because if someone spends the time to create a fully accurate group of celebrities or whoever, it pretty much has to be shared.

Punishing players for playing the game is never a good idea.

Yeah, I have to say that "doing hard labor" or some other bullshit like that it a terrible idea.

Random musings follow. Ye have been warned.
So I was mulling over some game play ideas that I know I will never see in game. I can't get them out of my head so hopefully writing them out will.
Random Thought 1) Would it be cool if after you bust criminals a Police Van shows up to the crime scene and begins the journey of bringing them to the nearest Precinct? I'm not saying the player criminals must sit in a van and do nothing, they could be replaced with NPCs or something after they have been busted.
But how about this; The police van shows up and once it begins its journey a call goes out to criminals (Similar to an APB for Cops). The criminals must stop the van from reaching the police station and instead get it back to a safe house. When the criminals attack the police van an APB goes out to Enforcement to protect that van. Enforcement agents need to get that van to the nearest station because when it does get there the "arrested criminals" will snitch and reveal the location of all the criminals in town for a fix amount of time. (Or maybe just the "arrested criminal's" Gang(s) ) Allowing easy hunting for Enforcement. The only thing Criminals get out of getting the van to a safe house is, well, preventing the cops from knowing where they are. Also this Mission Type does not need to happen every time.
Random Thought 2) If an Enforcement player has been very successful in completing missions a Hit will go out on them and every two-bit punk with a gun will have the option to hunt them down and kill them. Being the one to kill the cop will net you a sum of money. The higher the skill level of the Hit the more money the criminal(s) will get. (Could be a group effort) I suppose this could also be used to keep in the line the "Shafts" repeatedly taking out newbies.
Well thats it. I know they are not perfect and can use a good bit of ironing out. Plus I hold no illusions that I will see these in game, it just makes me feel better to get em off my chest.

Don't you think we all might be over thinking this a little bit when the game is so far out and there isn't really any information at all out.
Probably.
The hype machine must be fed, however.

Sure, you can kill some fools as a cop. Then again, I'm sure there's benefits from cuffing, though there's no leveling in the game. There's plenty of ways to reward the obviously tougher route of 'cuffing.
Don't you think we all might be over thinking this a little bit when the game is so far out and there isn't really any information at all out.
Yes. I'm excited as anyone and you're all starting to drive me crazy anyway. Think of the simplest mechanics you can, that is probably what they're going for. They talk about an easily accessible game, so, it's probably something you can pick up and play with little thought.
That being said, I would like the option of killing or arresting, with bonus points for arresting. I can see this being in-game, and some sort of incentive to go quietly for criminals being that say, nothing bad happens to you if you fail and you're arrested, you just get nothing. If you die, you lose a little money or something. Thus it's a constant gamble as to whether or not you should risk a payday or just surrender so you don't get raped.
Although forcing arrests through melee weapons would be great too. Nothing is more bad ass then surviving a huge fire fight, and then taking in the bad guys alive.

That's how I imagined it - fairly simple and fast paced. There's nothing wrong with that, honestly. They likened it to Counter-Strike, after all, except this time we'll have vehicles and a big city to fight in. Gangsters can go around committing crimes and fighting amongst themselves, while the cops look for gangsters to arrest and get an APB when a crime-mission is in progress.
And you do get the option of arresting people, Malach. They showed this in the gameplay videos. Am I the only one catching these things? :P Everyone seemed to miss the 100 players per server comment in the video, too.
Anyways, a monthly fee really could be up in the air. With so few players per server and simple gameplay, maybe there won't be one, or at the very least, a cheaper fee. There are games on the 360 with 50+ player servers (at least one, anyways - Frontlines) with no fee, so is double the amount really a stretch? Granted, we don't really know too much of how the online system works. It is described as an MMO, so it'll probably have that fee. Either way, my lust for this game is high.

This'd better not be one where everyone gets their own big ideas and hype up for what the game could be, then complains that it's a let-down when it doesn't meet their own expectations. Pisses me off no end when I see that.

Frankly, a game has to be damn good if I'm going to spend $50-60 on it and then spend an additional $15 on it every month to continue to play it.
