Super Smash Bros Melee: Need PhDs in Strategy to Help Struggling Intern

So basically I made the mistake of throwing SSBM into my roommate's Wii. (I've never played it before, I never owned a Cube) Fast forward a week later -- Now that I'm permanently addicted and will probably lose my girlfriend, I'd at least like to know how to play a few characters properly.

For starters I picked Mario, mostly because I heard he was one of the most balanced characters and was mediocre in strength and pretty quick. (Should I switch to Luigi? I've heard he's better than Mario)

I've got down the smash attacks pretty well, but I struggle with the Up+Smash headbutt. When is there an appropriate time to use this? I assumed I was supposed to use it when a character was falling, but this hasn't worked out for me to well. (Link can has sword in my fayze)

I need a really good air juggle combo. I've been trying to do the coin uppercut, then land and jump again with a bicycle kick, then charge a smash attack and wait for them to land before finishing them off. Is there a better air juggle? This is what I'd say I struggle the most with for Mario. His air attacks are awesome but I don't feel I utilize them properly. I almost never use his tornado punch -- maybe I could combo this into an air juggle?

Down+Smash has worked pretty well for me when surrounded, but I tend to struggle against bigger characters like DK and Bowser. (The challenge with 20 DKs or so took me forever to beat) What's an optimum strategy against these guys using Mario/Luigi?

And finally, when I get comfortable with Mario, what characters should I move on to?

If there's any strategy or combinations (or even links) you guys know that would help me improve, please lemme know. I've already read the FAQs on gamefaqs but wasn't impressed. I know I asked a ton of questions, so any responses, short or in-depth would be appreciated. I really wanna up my game before Brawl comes out.

And finally, fuck Pichu. He's a rat bastard.

Thanks,
Kain_Highwind

Marth is the easiest to pick up and play by far, I'd suggest you try him out for a while instead of Mario. And honestly, trying to get good at melee won't help you at brawl, since it comes out in two weeks. It's clear that you're very new to the game, and there's a lot of ground for you to cover

Thanks -- I think I'm gonna give the Guard/Up+Smash a shot... the advanced dash techs etc. look promising but are gonna take some time to master.

I need some good air juggle combos... any advice from anyone?

If an air game is what you want, I find Luigi much better at it than Mario. All his aerial attacks are strong, fast and have great priority. I use attacks like his down smash to bounce opponents in the air, and then jump and karate chop them away (or any other of his potent aerials).

Though if you do take Luigi, wavedashing is very important for his Melee game. He's a pretty slow runner.
