Hypertension

So, I've had a headache the last couple days behind my left eye, and it feels worse today than it has previous days. Today I was in the store and I sat down at the blood pressure check thing and it came back with some bad numbers: 199/100. I freaked out for a minute, then calmed down, removed the track jacked I was wearing and took it a couple more times, which returned less bad numbers, around 170/90.

Obviously, I need to go to the doctor for medication to try and get it under control and ramp up the weight loss plan, but as the systolic number is showing as Level 2 Hypertension, I'm wondering if it's more serious and I need to go to the hospital right now.

Those machines are spotty at best. Get into a clinic this week and have it taken for real, before you worry.

Edit: Even if that was accurate, you're not going to have an immediate stroke or anything. See a doctor when you can.

Ok...don't fuck around with this. It's serious and you need to call your doctor asap. I would actually reccomend going to a walk in clinic. The co-pay is usually the same as a regular doctor visit. The urgent cares around here are anyway.
Fats is correct in saying that that those machines are spotty at best, but you stilll want to get yourself checked. I have high blood pressure and i'm on medication for it. there are many many factors when looking at high blood pressure. It's higher in the morning when you first wake up, higher after eating, lower after working out..etc.
STAY AWAY FROM SALT. it's shocking how much salt is in stuff. Most white bread has about 16% of your sodium per slice for the DAY! processed meats, and soup are packed with sodium. A can of chicken or tomato soup has like 30-60% of your salt for the day. REALLY really really look at that sodium and cut that shit out asap..as much of it as you can.
don't worry about weight training, just walk and do some cardio for 20-40 min a day if you can. machines or just walking/jogging while listening to you ipod.
these changes will have an amazing effect on your blood pressure and general health. but still go see your doctor.

Most urgent care centers will test your blood pressure for free.
In the meantime, don't freak out too much because you will only make it worse. Start these changes today and you'll be heading down the right path. set up an appointment with your doctor and he will give you more specific info about your situation and possibly put you on a low dose medicine for a trial time.

You'll be fine, i know it sucks, i'm there too. Feel free to drop a line.

I laid down for 15 minutes and re-took it using my parents home monitoring machine which reported much less scary numbers (130/85ish). So I'll skip the hospital for right now and go see the doctor when I get paid this week (I'm living in a small town at the moment and only have access to any urgent care clinics)

Actually, I'm a nurse and that is shocking advice. Yes, the machines are bad but they are not totally unreliable. If you are getting high readings you need to go get it checked out as soon as practical. You should also request that the doctor do some blood tests (especially your cholesterol).

The number one cause of strokes is hypertension, so yes indeed a blood pressure like that could potentially cause a stroke.

Absolutely, but it won't happen tomorrow (unless he's the unluckiest motherfucker on earth).

Well, no I didn't mean to be all dramatic about it, but everybody likes to think that things won't happen to them, I've seen more than enough strokes caused by "I'll just wait to see my doctor" or, "I didn't think I needed to take that medicine any more because my blood pressure is normal" (it's normal because they DO take the medicine)

Knowing the affects and what ones quality of life is once somebody has had a stroke, I wouldn't be taking ANY chances.
