I know that one of the missions that been revealed is one where snipers are shooting people breaking a curfew and your mission is to find the snipers and take them out.
Apparently, several of them are in buildings. I've seen a fair amount of videos that show the player running up stairs and getting to them by going through walls.
Inefficient, I think. I think efficiency DEMANDS that the building itself be removed.
I think I'll try that method. For efficiency's sake, of course.
I don't know, I think sneaking is the best way. Pounding a sniper through a wall is only fitting. They're such jerks. And you can always destroy the building afterwards. You know. To cover up the evidence of your misdeeds. With explosives.
No the best way would be to get a vehicle and some mines, and launch it through the roof onto his head, you know, let them get some taste of how it is to be killed from seemingly nowhere

Does the timer deactivate after you get the mech? Please say yes. Still haven't gotten it, but damn if there aren't hundreds of ways to blow shit up in the game.

Fixed for increased subtlety.
Doesn't one of the mechs have rocket launchers? Couldn't you just stand back and snipe the snipers with flying explosives?

Sadly no. On the other hand, you can get the mech and get it where you need it in under 2 minutes. I've done it.

I would imagine the missions that involve access to the Assault Walker will probably be more centered around massive explosions than trying to take out squishy, defenseless sniper targets. I mean the EDF has tanks and walkers as well - it's not like they're going to just let you waltz around with a 50-ton Death Machine without at least some resistance.
Edit: Wait a minute....
Rockem' Sockem' WALKERS! Then this game will have EVERYTHING!
It's late in this thread but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the demo. The overall game reminds me a lot of Far Cry 2 but the physics in the game and effects I saw in the demo have me excited to play.
The demo was a blast. Lots of fun blowing the hell out of everything. If they can make the entire game that much fun I think you've got a huge game on your hands. That walker was crazy stupid fun. HULK SMASH...SMASH...SMASH!!!
It's also very impressive to be able to knock out sections of walls and see the structure of things slowly crumble as you do more damage. It's unprecedented in games to have this complex a system of destruction so I can't say how excited I am to see what other things you guys have come up with. (The devs)
Great job on the demo. Best I've played in years...I think...? Demo's don't usually do anything for me, this did.
I would crack open the skull of an EDF soldier to see the developers genericize the customization in Saints Row 2, and the destruction physics of this, and sell them to all. Games would universally improve.

Hehehehehehe. Finally downloaded the demo. So I still haven't made it to the walker in an hour, but you can destroy every single building within the time limit
Why are people having such problems? It's not a hard game.

Probably because everyone gets distracted by the holy shit buildings are so breakable!
We've got cheats :-) My favorite is the super sledgehammer cheat, which increases the force it impacts stuff with. You hit an EDF tropper and you'll send them flying *through* a building.

I just read this out to my girlfriend, and we are both amazed.
This has to be the best game ever made. Seriously. The final boss fight could literally be an unkillable pit that one-shots you, and I still wouldn't care.
Its clearly over-the-top. But I'd take an over-the-top game over a clumsily serious one anyday. I mean the bad guy is basically Dr. Evil, and in that demo mission im pretty sure I killed at least 300 EDF and destroyed 50 vehicles.
I get that, I mean, you wouldn't be playing the game right if you didn't galumph about, slapping bombs onto peoples heads and uppercutting tanks with giant robots. I'm just saying the guy's strength clashes with the feel that you're a grassroots-leader in a fire-retardant jacket who's taking back Mars for the people. I even said as much.
I just don't think it's hard to make it so, say, pistol whipping a reinforced concrete wall doesn't lead to it crumbling meekly to pieces. It kind of makes the rest of the destruction seem less... impressive? I dunno, I'm sure it's just me. If I can elbow a wall and it does as much damage as a damn grenade, it makes the grenade seem lame by comparison. Hyperbole, of course, but it explains my point.
One of the 'weapons of destruction' or whatever videos says how it's some super-powered hammer that delivers about a million tonnes of force on impact. Give or take.
It's nonsense, but it means you can SMASH DOWN BUILDINGS.
edit: I see I'm waaaaay late to this party. This is what happens when I'm away for the weekend.
I would really really enjoy it if the super sledgehammer cheat were available in the full game. Please try to make this happen, JNighthawk.

When I finally got around to actually completing the mission instead of blowing shit up, I was kind of dissappointed when I realized I was about to do yet another on-rails shooter/escape sequence. I was suprised by how absolutely awesome it was.
Shooting the APCs every which way is great. Sometimes they blow up, sometimes they go flying into the air, and sometimes you alter their direction so they wreck into a cliff (or go flying off a bridge). It may have actually been my favorite part of the demo.
I played the original Red Faction split screen death match modes with my friends for a looong time after release, and I'm really looking forward to this. This is probably the first demo that sold me on a game that really wasn't on my radar.
That was probably the only on-rails segment in any game where I was excited to try it again after another playthrough. Generally they're just something you have to get through to get to the rest of the game, but shooting an APC with a missile and watching that explosion carry the vehicle through the air to pancake another car was pure gold.

Or spring into the air and land on top of you.
I absolutely agree, that section is instantly one of my favourite on-rails sections in any game. I say that without a shade of hyperbole.
Yeah, and they don't have telescopic super vision (not untill you raise the alert level anyway). Not that it maters once you're in that mech, but it's nice to sneak around on foot and take dudes down with the hammer.
I love that if you grab one of those trucks at the start of the demo you can get the walker in like 20 seconds simply by smashing through everything in your way.
Also the chatter and little details are excellent. I've noticed civilians inspecting things with clipboards, smoking, etc, and up close the character model detail of individual units is excellent. I love how if you throw an explosive at an EDF car, you can hear the guy inside scream because hes desperately trying to get out before it detonates.
I love when the EDF dogs start shooting random civvies for no apparent reason. Gotta keep 'em space miners in line.
Yeah i saw that. I guess one got too close and the EDF guy just opened fire.
On a related matter. Is there a alert level for the EDF. I was just exploring on one playthrough, blowing stuff up and killing any EDF that got in my way when all of a sudden a shitton of them turn up in an APC.
On your minimap there's a light that starts green. When you start killin' and blowin' up things it goes to yellow then red. I'm assuming it shows the EDF's alert level.
Along those lines, is this pretty much an "everyone shoots you on sight" kind of thing, or is there a way to walk around that doesn't draw attention? I noticed every time I played the demo, I couldn't do anything without getting shot at. In a full game, that's gonna get really annoying.
I think the demo puts you in a zone where the guards are extra alert, or something like that. If you just walk around in a normal zone, without whipping out a gun, you shouldn't be fired on by anyone, in the full game. Or something along those lines.

Ditto. There are some high security zones that you don't get to just walk about in. The demo is in one of them.

I took it to mean that the cheats are available in the full game. What possible reason would the devs have for making a 'super sledge' just for themselves? Other than it would make them colossal jerks who lorded all the cool toys.
You guys don't want to be those kinds of jerks, right?

Yeah. I wasn't talking about our dev cheats. Those are going to be pretty uninteresting to pretty much everyone. I'm talking about the cheats you'll be able to use in the game.

JNighthawk confirmed a few pages back that yeah, this is an EDF controlled zone. You aren't welcome there, they will shoot you on sight. There are safe areas where you can go to upgrade stuff and take a breather, like Eos. In those areas, if you walk around with your hammer, you won't be attacked on sight be the EDF.

I'm wondering, in these safe zones, if you do enough chaos and damage, do you get EDF showing up to stop you after a while, or can you just do endless violence with no consequence?

You mind if I mention that in an article I'm gonna be writing about the game/demo? I know studios can be particular about what information gets talked about.
I keep finding new things to love. In one of my run through this evening, in the final explosive chase, I caught a pursuing car with a rocket that catapulted the driver not only up and out, but for miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiles up into the air.

It looks like we'll be releasing the list of cheats later on, so I can't give the list here.
Feel free to include anything I or the few other Volition guys in here have said. This is public :-)

Also I think its awesome that it tracks when you destroy propaganda.
Man the core combat is quite fun, and the AI can be a challenge and pretty strong for a game like this.
Also, stealing a van, covering it in landmines and driving it into the walker hanger never gets old.

I'm not ashamed to say that I have a boner.
Volition could run up Freespace 3 (discussed earlier in this thread) if we ask them hard enough. I'm sure of it.
I'll see if I can find a list of all the cheats.
