Rivets In Your Head- An Industrial Music Thread.

I figured we have a metal thread, which is pretty nice in its own.

Why not have an Industrial music thread.

Industrial music for those that are unaware, is the delicate mixing of Metal, Noise, Heavy Sampling, Electronic Beats, and in the earlier days of Industrial, Voice Synthesizers.

Early industrial bands include Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, and NON (this is taken from Wiki) and were pretty much looped beats and scattered noise.

Industrial later evolved into a more harder scene with a flair for darker and grittier influences, with lyrics ranging from BSDM to mutilations. Not to be confused with the BSDM scene of the Goth culture of the 80s, industrial was very much more "extreme" and less about the "depression".

Flash forward a few, and industrial now has "subcultures and genres" under their belt, there is now the following.

Metal Industrial: Guitar based industrial with heavier influences from well..metal - Bands like some NIN, Ministry, Die Krupps, and Razed in Black.

EBM: More of a trancier version of industrial, has lots of synths and less emphasis on the guitars. Mostly when you go to a club on Industrial Night, this is what you are mostly going to hear due to the pure dancability of this subgenre - Bands like VnV Nation, Front Line Assembly, Apoptygma Berzerk, and Coil.

Traditional Industrial - Bands like Skinny Puppy, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Throbbing Gristle, NON, Coil and Ministry.

Albums to look for if you are curious about Industrial are as follows.

MindPerpetualAlbumCover.jpg
Skinny Puppy - Mind the Perpetual Intercourse

qogggjbuee.jpg
Ministry - A Mind is a Terrible Thing To Taste

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

KMFDM_Symbols.jpg
KMFDM - Symbols

vnv_futureper.jpg
VnV Nation - Futureperfect

Suicide Commando - Axis of Evil

this is a pretty great idea.
C89.5 has an industrial show weekends, which rocks.

when i had a radio show, the dude before me did the industrial show.
I am a big fan of industrial, provided i'm in the mood for it.

(Although I dislike the groups which just try to make painful-to-listen-to music).

VNV Nation, NiN, Front Line Assembly, Apoptygma Berzerk, Velvet Acid Christ, Meat Beat Manifesto are all big favorites of mine.

Oh man, I haven't heard Die Krupps mentioned in a dogs age.

Fatherland is such a good song.

I have tickets to see Ministry in May. I can't wait. I'm also going to see Seabound and Iris at the end of March. Not really industrial I don't think, but they fit in with the likes of Apop B. and VNV.

A local club just had a KMFDM v. Combichrist night, but I didn't go 'cause it was too fucking cold to leave my apartment. I'm kinda sad.

I've never grouped NIN in with industrial. I'm pretty sure Trent has denied being industrial, even though he's credited with making it more mainstream with Pretty Hate Machine.

    I missed KMFDM's last tour.

I'd be nice if they'd hurry up and fucking go on tour again. I really don't give a shit about their new remix album.

Kapt'n K said there's going to be big news released on their anniversary this year.

I'm hoping it's some kind of tour with PIG involved.

I saw them on their last tour. Modulate and Imperative Reaction opened. It was a really good show.

There was some dude there with something like 2 foot high platform boots. I wanted to push him over.

I have to say that as much as KMFDM has aged very badly, they still put on an incredible show.

As do Skinny Puppy, I have seen SP three times live and each time I was blown away.

I would love to see Combichrist and Terrorfakt live one day, right now those are my two favorite industrial bands at the moment, without ignoring NIN.

It was alright, but I was really disappointed.

I think their earlier work would fit nicely in the industrial category, mostly Pretty Hate Machine in the EBM category and Broken on in the metal industrial category.

Of course this does not apply to bands such as Marylin Manson who nine tenths of music shops like to put in the industrial section.

I agree, the last tour I saw was the Greater Good tour, as I dont think (I could be totally wrong) the Myth tour has hit Cali yet.

That tour was decent, but you can really tell the band has gotten old with age, and the drug use has caught up with them hard.

The Mind the Perpetual Intercourse tour and the Rabies tour was by far some of the best live shows that SP has ever...ever put on.

I think the great thing about VnV is anyone can get into them, its kind of like NIN where there is always one song that will stick out as people liking them.

For NIN it was Closer, I think for VnV it would be Beloved. I think everyone whether they like industrial or not will say they like Beloved.

It doesn't matter what the crowd is like that night, "Chrome" and "The Farthest Star" will always pack the dance floor.

Assemblage 23 was suppose to come to my town last year, but they had big problems securing a venue. I was sad.

Front Line Assembly did play here last year, and it was one of the best shows I saw.

I think I prefer Covenant to VNV Nation, but I like them both. I would consider them more 'future pop' than Industrial, really, but such distinctions have become so finely granulated as to lose all meaning for me.

Legion is my favorite VNV nation track.

Also FOR SHAME no one has mentioned Front 242, the progenitors and masters of EBM...

I listen to VNV Nation, Nine Inch Nails and KMFDM. I pretty much will listen to anything classified under EBM. I'm really not a fan at all of guitars most of the time, so that's probably why... I dunno.

    I like this thread.

That album right there, along with Skinny Puppy: Mind the Perpetual Intercourse, were my first foray into industrial.

This was of course when I was a "New Waver" as Goth wasnt invented yet, and there were a total of three "New Wavers" including me at the school I went to.

Land of Rape and Honey was such an awesome album and not for Stigmata alone.

Funny thing about Ministry is their earlier stuff (With Sympathy) sounds remarkably like Depeche Mode

Then bampf they went metal industrial, it was the weirdest transition and the coolest transition ever.
