I'm probably going to do one more free trial before I buy, but ultimately for my main I just cannot decide whether to roll a Captain or a Minstrel. The Captain I played to level 13 was "okay," but the description of their role in-game sounds exactly like what I'd want to do in the long run. I've never wanted to be the healer in other games (GW, WoW), staring at other peoples' health bars for the duration of a battle. Yet the Minstrel I played to level 10 was so much fun! Self-heals FTW! How exhilarating it was to take on two level 10 Dourhands and still be standing at the end.

I realize that at level 13 and 10 I don't have the full picture of what either class is capable of, but I want to be able to enjoy myself on the way to level 50, too. What to do, what to do......

I'm the same way about not wanting to be a healer in other games, but I love my minstrel. I play her with a stable balanced group of RL friends, though, (a guardian, a LM, and 2 champions) which means that I can go all War-Speech on the mobs most of the time because I rarely need to heal anyone more than I can do with half-powered heals.

On the other hand, I love my Captain... and my Lore Master... and my Hunter... and my Burglar... :D

I don't get this assumption that most MMO players have that you have to have one "main" character when you have 5 slots open. I mean, if you want to, sure, but you don't HAVE to give any one character precedence over the others.

I think it is more of an old Everquest state of mind. It took a good 4-5 months of solid playing to get to level 60 in EQ. So, you generally played only one character.

Anyone know if clients are locked to their region? Because if not I could install the game proper from a friends disc, just not sure if the english euro client will connect to the US servers.

I think Riddle may well be the best skill in any game ever.

Alright, Im trying out the free trial and am quite impressed. I'm playing a champion at the moment because I'm a whore for dual wielders. I absolutely love the title system, for one. The graphics are absolutely amazing and like other people have stated, it seems like they know how to tell a good story with their instanced stuff. One of my biggest questions about any MMO however: What's the end game like? Is it worth going through all the trouble of leveling a character and such?

Anyway, couple of questions, mostly to do with Champions:

Is it necessary to always dual wield as a champion or can I be just as effective with a 2 handed weapon/polearm or whatever? It seems like my furor skills are based off of using two weapons.

I played old EQ, back when 50 was the max level. I didn't understand it then either. :P

I mean, sure, some people prefer to stick with one character, I can see that. But the outright assumption that you have to have one main and the others are relegated to unimportant "alt" status just doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe it comes from the big guild mentality. I suppose a guild really only wants to equip one toon per person and wants to be able to count on a particular toon in raid situations. Maybe the fact that this type of thinking doesn't work for me is part of why I'll never really mesh well with a big raid guild.

I, for one, can't really stand playing alts. I feeling like I'm not accomplishing anything when playing 2-3 characters at the same time, all usually under level 20. Maybe it interferes with the RPG aspect of it, where you are just one character in the world, and thats what everyone knows you by. I just don't feel any progress when I play the same levels over and over again with different characters.

    But that's just me.

Yeah, for me, it's that I tend to really get into one thing (style of play, look of a character, etc.) and I don't have a lot of time to devote equally to another character. I can see myself really being into playing a (Wo)Man Minstrel, and I just know I won't have that level of interest in playing another class or race beyond the introduction.

It's not like Guild Wars where you can get to max level in about a week; even there, I have 6 level 20's but only regularly played one. :)

*Rubs his hands together* Glad to see theres a question I can help with after coming back from my hiatus. Now first off I'd like to mention that you cannot use a halberd, it is a Captain only weapon. Now all of those skills that mention things having an off-hand attack etc? They change, if you equip a two-hander the off-hand part no longer appears. The good thing about wielding a two-hander is that you end up using a lot less power in the long run, and that the attacks that specify multiple main-hand attacks will do the same with your two-hander. Its of my opinion that these attacks work better for two-handers because of this.

Now... to answer -when- you should switch to two-handers, which might be another question on your mind. I'd say in the mid-twenties or so. Before that for me the two-handed weapons didn't seem to have enough oomph to sacrifice my dual weapons. I should mention not to use your melee effectiveness 'stat' to determine the strength of your two-hander, I made that mistake for awhile. Its a helpful thing, but for the most part it takes dps and not damage into account. Overall a two-hander is going to hit harder blow for blow, you'll use quite a bit less power because of their speed and I'd say a two-hander makes your AoE abilities far more useful in a solo situation.

    Hope that helps.

Got my founders sub from a nice guy in this thread and bought the game. I'll be setting that up shortly and activating it so I don't know if you get anything for it but if you do... it'll be incoming.

I haven't actually done anything besides create a character and walk two feet but what I did see (with maxed out DX10 graphics) was gorgeous. I am sure I will enjoy this and have a fun time when I'm not doing the increasingly rare arenas in WoW.

How do I get involved in the guild/vent chan?

Type /joinchannel pennyarcade wang to join the PA channel and say "Hi" (you'll have to type /1 to start typing in that channel). Someone will invite you into the Kinship after that.

Question: I often see people saying things like "Looking for people for Book X Chapter Y". What are they talking about?

I am loving this game! The stories behind the quests, the fluidity of the adventures...maybe its just cause I have such fond memories from reading LotR over and over. I'm only level 13 (Hedger, man hunter) and I am finishing up quests in Staddle before moving on to Bree.

How is the gameplay at higher levels? 30s? 40s? 50? Is it all raid-based? Is there a decent progression of quests along the entire journey?

The storyline is revealed in the form of "books" (12 or 13? so far) with chapters to complete; I think of these like Guild Wars missions as compared to standard quests since they are scripted and advance the storyline. At level 13 in Bree, you should be close to completing the "Prologue" section and be getting your first quests that lead to the opening of Book 1, Chapter 1.

To agree on and expand, these are THE story based quests, almost all dealing with supporting and aiding the Fellowship in some ancillary or direct way as they make their way from the Shire to Rivendell and just prior to leaving for Moria. They are often scripted, always fantasticly done (speaking from the perspective of a lore-whore), and usually culminate in fellowship quests. They are referred to as Epic Quests.

Many other story based quest lines run parallel to these, as the epic quests will usually bring you to the person who starts a separate set of quests. For example, book 3 starts with the person who also begins the quest line that ends in the Retaking Weathertop Instance. Book 4(or maybe it's 5) begins with Aragorn in Rivendell, who also sends you on a quest line to help him reforge the Shards of Narsil, which ends in a large instance.

    To expand on this...

Each book is basically a quest line, with each chapter a single quest, although it may have multiple steps. You can be working on any number of books in parallel, but can only be in one particular chapter of each at a time. (i.e. you don't have to finish the prologue to start book 1, but it really makes more sense from a storyline perspective if you do. One of my characters started book 2 before finishing the prologue or even starting book 1, but I felt cheesy doing it.)

If you go through them all in order, it takes you through a series of adventures scripted to be parallel to Frodo's, and of nearly equal import. When you're in the Prancing Pony, for example, you find that you just missed Frodo. When you're in Rivendell, you actually talk to him before he takes off on his own quest.

I think I broke the named spider in Rath Teraig at lunch time today. After about 4 kills, the spawns started getting erratic (the ones coming down from the trees when he spawned would show up, but he only did about 1/4 of the time) and then they just quit spawning altogether.

It's enough to make me believe in anti-camp code.

Suscribed at founder's rate and bought the game for 9.99$ (using the code), good stuff.

Now this Barrovian Society, is it active? I have a ton of group quests sitting in my log that I can't find groups for. I find it especially hard to find groups for the Book quests ( I'm on Bk.2 atm). Considering how they are supposed to be the "main" quests, it's kinda odd.

Guess I should start by joining the PA channel...

So on my 23 captain I decided to try to go and complete the journeyman tailoring quest around Esteldin today. Nothing like dodging level 28+ mobs in order to get to the quest mob, good times.

Also, this game uses the G15 lcd is a neat manner; I can get on a horse, alt-tab out and type, and since it displays your current location, I know when to alt-tab back in and resume playing.

Yeah, a bunch of us are on most nights. I think the main group is around 20-23 right now, a little low for Book 2, but we're working on getting higher through Lone-Lands and North Barrows quests.

Also, we should get another Great Barrows group together with the current crop of low-mid 20s players. We have enough people, and it's a balanced group.

The character perks are timed, with the exception of the experience boost, which is basically just buying rested xp.

Monster chars are another story. DP are basically the currency you use to buy skills, traits, etc. Those are very much not temporary.
