There was James Thurber
He's best known for his short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"
But for me his best writing was his more autobiographical work that mixed the absurd with the intimate
Stories like "The Dog That Bit People" or "The Night the Bed Fell" are wonderful sketches of the bizzare gothic of family life. Territory that would be mined later on by such great satirists as David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell. Do yourself a favor, go to the library and pick up any book that says "Author: James Thurber"
You won't be disappointed, especially if you like heraing stories about dogs.
