Indeed, evidence shows that CAPTCHA is at least partly broken. So I'm experimenting with new ways to catch spammers. Thus far, it isn't going well. We've gotten 10x more false-positives than we have gotten real spammers who would be caught by the system. I've got 2 ideas to help cut down the false positives, but those haven't been tested yet.

This seems like an intriguing solution, but unfortunately he hasn't made it yet and I'm sure you guys don't have the time to implement something like that. Anyone seen something along these lines that's actually been programmed?

It's my understanding that a decent amount of bots are just people who are paid to get past captchas all day, so while that system is probably "true bot" proof (and pretty brilliant as a side note), it won't really do anything to combat the human who is getting paid to bypass it. I don't really know a lot about how spammers operate, though, so this paragraphi might be a wad of bullshit.
Spam isn't a huge deal, but it does look bad on the forums, and there are the occasional mod blackouts where a spam thread can run several pages (like the Dustin Hamilton thread).
Anyway Ramius good luck with the methods you are proposing. I remember when it got so bad that registration was turned off, and that sucked.
Gonna poke this thread back into life rather than bother posting a new one; should this text be completely incapable of being edited, or what? It's not really a big deal, I suppose, but I can't help but feel a very deep sense of shame whenever I look at it and see how it cut off my novel-length explanation as to how I am not, in fact, a robot.
Joke's on me for trying to be ironic about the 'over five words' bit.

Same here.... :P
My little "5 words" got cut off just 4 words short, but for some reason I can't seem to edit the text once it's there.
Anyone know how to get it changed again?
Or does that sort of thing top the list in the "bugs no one really cares about or pays attention to" section....?
There's some really interesting research done by Jonothan Zittrain about how captchas are really useless against devoted spammers, as they set up semi-legit web sites that force real users to solve the captchas they spider from the target sites, with all that aggregated data they can hit a lot of systems really hard that use similar captcha systems like PHPBB and Word Press.
I think a better way, in our context would be to ask some rudimentary question about the comic.

In the future, biometrics will probably be required for posting to the internet. A quick x-ray can validate whether or not someone is a robot. This will also future-proof us against the inevitable conflict as foretold by Flight of the Conchords.
Everyone should just band together and have one central identity station (perhaps per nation if need be). Everyone applies there and gets a unique id or code and then they have to enter that code anywhere they go.
I know people say this leads to identity theft but considering my identity was stolen before I even started applying for things (SSN and all) I doubt this will enhance it at all.
Plus this way you can ask where the prick that has been spamming you lives and kick him so hard in the balls that they fly out his rectum...people say it isn't possible...but they said that about flying transportation too!
The best part is that he signed it twice, once in the post and then once with the signature.
Just can't be too careful nowadays with identity thieves lurking around every corner. The best way to make sure nobody can assume your personality is to sign everything you do, as many times as possible.
In his defence: he added the "rico" thing to his sig after people yelled at him to stop signing his posts and use his sig instead. Now all his older posts have them signed twice.

Although to be honest I haven't really been seeing many/any lately.

Jeff Atwood wrote some stuff on making captcha better before he went insane. Might be worth looking at.

Well at least he signed his post. Until then I assumed he was a robot.

Which gets a little weird during sex.
