So, it was a DOS or possibly Win 95 / 98 game, with a spaceship that races into the screen. it's set on some roads in space, with gaps and blocks on them and you have to move lanes and jump so you don't die. I think it started quite easy but got a lot harder pretty soon.

And I'm starting a timer from the second I click "submit" :)

    Or its predecessor, Kosmonaut.

Both are freely available from the developer.

Yes! And there's a Flash version that works pretty well too:

    PA wins again.

I spent so much time in high school playing Skyroads on the school computers.

Such an awesome yet absolutely frustrating game.

Hold on, now you've stirred up memories of a game I can't quite remember. I think I was playing this in the mid-late 90s, this futuristic car racing game, probably with some sort of clever "car" title. It had fairly decent (for the time) graphics, with impressive lighting and such... and that's all I can remember of it.

Find this thing or ask me more questions. It's really going to bug me now.

It doesn't ring any bells. Also, I think the graphics were better than that.

After searching around a little, I think it was MegaRace. Without looking up Dethkarz, though, I wouldn't have thought to find the Gamespot index of racing games that I could sort by release date. So thanks.

    Ballistics?

    EDIT: Oh, well, never mind.

Yeah, I would have guessed megarace too. I only played it once (actually, I only saw someone playing it), but it was pretty good for the time. I really liked how all of the sound died out when you exceeded the speed of sound. Not very realistic, but an interesting touch nonetheless.

I'm watching videos on YouTube, as I don't remember the details of the game at all, but this game is pretty damn awesome. Special prize for completing a set of 3 tracks - a genuine Scottish accent, tested by a qualified Scotsman.
