7 eyes, 4 legs. Or at least that's what the comic depicted. :P
In other news, I just got my first goblin siege. They came with about a dozen axes and one bow, and didn't even make it to my fortress's entrance before half were interrupted by steel bolts from the marksdwarves in my guard towers. The rest fled, and I chased them down with a few hammerdwarves. The only thing that was missing was for a goblin to go flying 10 squares after getting hammered, or maybe explode.
Maybe next time.

Fixed it. I was worried that if it had seven eyes, it'd be more vulnerable, but in retrospect, it's a giant, nocturnal, death-bird that can fly, drink blood, see in the dark, and can swim. Dwarves might need the advantage.
Also, fixed a bug, i'm not sure, but I think there was a possibility for it to show up as a ground-type vermin before, in their hundreds. Just something to be aware of if you used the old file that had the vermin_grounder tag. Also added the [CAN_LEARN] tag, so that Deep Crow's who participate in certain acts get better (IE, a swordsman can get better at wielding a sword, etc, etc.) over time. My hopes are that since it doesn't have an arbitrary death age, once a few Deep Crow's get released into the gameworld, they'll train themselves up to be stygian horrors.
Edit: Debating whether to give it the ability to speak with a generic evil sounding lisp. If you want to do it, just add in the tag [CAN_SPEAK] and [LISP]. Pretty sure you can set up a language file for it too, that'll determine what it says when it meets adventurers, if you know how.

I demand to know why my dwarves can't have deep crow meat! Or tame a War Deep Crow.
Any reasons my dwarf wouldn’t gather material for his project, and does he want cloth or thread? Bow goblins are super lame because I never get any named elephants. Oh and deep crows are awesome too.
quick question, what is this that I keep hearing about building towers with fortifications?
You can carve fortifications to shoot through into rock walls and stone, so just make a tower and put fortifications in it. It’s pretty pointless for siege engines though because they can’t shoot to other z levels though (This could have changed though.)
Approximately how fast does magma refill a vent? I have this idea for an obsidian generator but it'd be pretty pointless if I could only make a few dozen each year.

Pretty quickly. Not super-fast or even fast, but it gets there without it being ages. It's hard to evaluate personally, since I didn't try to empty it en-masse, but when redirecting some of it towards my fairly far-away smithing operation and then closing the floodgates, it took maybe two to three weeks to fill to fill again.
With multiple adjacent floodgates for faster flow from source to source since magma is unpressurized.
Edit: Does obsidian generate on the level of water, magma, or both? I seem to remember obsidian generating on the layer above the top of a vent when I had pumped water into it.

I demand to know why my dwarves can't have deep crow meat! Or tame a War Deep Crow.
I figured the latter would be unbalanced (Undead Eagles can slaughter armies of Dwarves, as it is. The AI would probably be boned if you unleashed a murder of Deep Crow's on a siege.), and the former...Well, that would be funny. Though one would assume that Deep Crow Meat would have some sort of toxic quality...
My next project will be to make a mod that simulates a zombie apocalypse. It should be easy to do once civ warfare is in, by including various sorts of undead creatures as a civ, and if possible setting up how they look at other races (food.). But until then, it should be doable by specifically making undead creatures, making it so they wander alot, and setting it so that they have access to all biome's. Then, making it so like 500 of them spawn per year. They'll probably be unarmed, and have bone claws for hands/be easy to cut down, for some epic fortress/adventurer battles, with the player/army literally charging through a horde of dozens of them, slaughtering them at higher levels.
The downside to this would be that alot of towns would probably be wiped out over time, as the zombie onslaught advanced, inexorably, from where-ever they spawned at. Also, i'm not sure how they'd interact with other creatures, so they could depopulate the world, given time.
Ever have a siege and a dragon appear at the same time? Let me tell you a story...
15 Goblins appeared (none ranged, thank god... or so i thought) and a minute later a Dragon appeared on the scene...
Ok... with NO military presence but a crapload of traps out front, I should be fine.
Well, Mr Dragon decided to B-Line for my fortress entrance while munching on a few of my livestock that just happen to be in his way... or not... as he went chasing a few camels all over my map. How I got that many camels I'll never know... and was finally subdued after running through no less than 17 stone fall traps, and into 6 recruits. One became a wrestler almost instantly.
he is now my captain of the guard.
(and I must remember to construct serrated disk traps next time.)
So in the commotion, the goblins must have been riding pa-pa-power wheels cause even tho they arrived on the map first, I was able to reload all traps and clean up the mess before they finally got anywhere near my fortress. So I sent my recruits out after arming them up with crossbows and whatnot.
They lost 3 goblins, and I lost 7 recruits... I don't know how it happened, but they'd mob 1 recruit after another, and I'm left scratching my head.
So now Everyone is training up to champion Marksdwarves, that won't happen again.
so, herds of elephants can be deadly... I just thought I'd share this with you.
When do they get deadly? My map has nearly exclusively elephants and I have been hunting them and taming them for a while. The only time I have ever seen a named elephant is when an ambush attacked a couple on the way to the fortress.
Is there a trigger for the goblin ambushes? Usually the attack my first/2nd year, but im on my fifth now and i haven't seen one goblin
I think it's a population over 80 Dwarves, though it still seems random. I've had fortresses where it was a yearly or seasonal thing, but my current one, while getting lots of Ambushes, has only had 1-2 Sieges after many, many years.
EDIT: Ah, wait, you were asking about ambushes, not sieges. Not sure on that one.
Oh well, my current fortress is going pretty well. I have loads of wood, magnetite and bitumenous coal. I got the closeby river incorporated into my fortress and everything is going swell. Which usually means something big and ugly is gonna come up a tear the place up
I agree though that more people should die in battle. Also we should see who they were and a historical event should record their passing and who killed them.
oh god, two ambushes of bow and crossbow goblins showed up. I've got 12 military dwarfs -_-;;
edit: somehow managed to survive. I drafted all my civilians and told them to stay somewhere safe, told my crappy military to stay safe, and hoped to hell that my 10 stonefall traps would do some damage. they did some decent damage, then my military dorfs could run in and finish them off :-) 1 useless hunter dead, 1 legendary miner dead, 2 elite wrestlers dead. could have been much worse.
edit 2: next season, I get 5 squads of crossbowgoblins. I'm locking my front door and never coming out.
You missed the bit where the goblins buried human babies alive and stuff.
Considering how much they cry, that's not an entirely bad idea.
I learned all I need to know about parenting from Dwarf Fortress.
Wear babies as armor?
One of my wrestlers blocked a mortal wound from a speargoblin last season with her baby. She was still ecstatic afterwards. Shiny happy legendary dining room prevails.
So I ended up finding the underground river on my current fortress using reveal, and as a result nothing seems to be growing in the mud around it. Is there an updated Hide tool/anything available that'll trigger the growth of those tower caps I need so very, very much?

I only know of the method that involves making a backup save, using reveal, memorizing the location and then restoring the backup and finding it normally.

My current fortress has just under 150 dwarves (my largest fortress ever! Yay!), but things are starting to drag a bit now. Sure, there's the occasional siege, but other than that nothing much is going on. I have a ridiculous amount of lavish meals, a couple champion dwarves, an economy (I HATE you, tax collector!), but no challenges. Should I be wary of the appearance of a megabeast? Even better, how would I cause a megabeast to appear and ravage my fortress?
At that point is where I start to impose challenges on myself. At the moment, I'm going for complete subterranean isolation - the biggest issues there are no trading and no wood or water until I can find the underground river.
I can never stay away from Dorf Fortress for too long.
Last night, I was playing and had a pretty ordinary ambush. They caught one of my planters out gathering the loot from the last amush and he gets struck down quickly, no surprise there. Since he's the only one out doors, I lock the doors and hoist the bridge. The gobbos are just hanging around with nothing going on until they notice someone's kitten still outside the gate. "Oh no!" I think, "that poor kitten is done for" (Unlike the rest of you heartless bastards, I genuinely feel bad about kittens dying and wait until they're full grown cats before I make meals out of 'em.) So the kitten takes off and all the gobbos go chasing after it. I watch intently as one gets close and closer as they make their way across the map. The kitten heads straight for a cliff and jukes the gobbo at the last second. The gobbo dissappears! I check down a couple of z-levels and sure enough, the gobbo has sustained massive damage from falling off the cliff. Haha, out-done by a kitten! Stupid gobbos.
