haha yeah they had cages in them and everything. He also ran over all my stone fall and weapon traps and knocked down my main doors. Hes just kinda chillin in a corner now though.
I'd love to see "ladders" added to this game. It would be a building-type object and you could "build" and "remove" it like normal or from one z-level above. Then you could dig out a giant pit, and then use ladders to get your dorfs out, but haul the ladders back up with you so, in the end you have a solid natural wall pit that nobody could get out of.

Just dig a starcase, and once the pit is dug out, build a floor over the top of the stairs. Sure it's not as pretty, but it has the same effect.

Hmm, interesting, i'll have to try that next time I dig a pit. I dug one to store a trapped colossus in; but the dwarves kept getting stuck down in the pit. Finally manage to clear it out, with the exception of the tax collector, who, for some reason, is now down in the pit. I thought nobles didn't work, but he must have decided to lend a hand removing that staircase? Any rate. Who do you think would win in a fight between a bronze colossus and a tax collector? Taking bets, gentlemen.
Nobles will try to disassemble construction, it's the only job they'll actually do.
Same with those damn children. They spend an eternity doing the job when an adult could tear the thing apart in a few seconds. Game really needs a daycare system so I can lock all the kids up and out of everyone's way.

For me, deconstruct jobs take forever no matter who's doing it. I think agility affects it, but nothing else.
Out of curiosity, how do you guys get your large retractable drawbridges to work? I had one built that was three deep and about 5 across to allow a wagon (they need extra two for safety or some crap). Looked vaguely like this:
_____
XXXXX
XXXXX
XXXXX
(X=bridge, _ /- = solid ground)
I linked all of them to the same lever. I pull the lever, they all disappear. I pull again, and only this remains:
_____
XXXXX
. . . . .
XXXXX
(with . being open ground)
Apparently when I pull the lever, the middle bridges have nothing to connect to/support themselves so they collapse down below. Even though I was allowed to build them over open ground because my workers can stand on the previous bridges. To fix it ive set up simply supports with permanent floors on top of them:
_____
XXXXX
+++++
XXXXX
It works, but it's hardly what I intended. How do you guys get your vastly large retractable drawbridges? I wanted the depth so I could retract them when someone was on it and cause them to fall, though I suppose 1 deep works functionally to keep people out.
Edit: Apparently there are both retractable bridges and drawbridges? What the hell? I don't remember seeing that option...
Basically what you got is a 1 tile border around the bridges (the commas), which is what they will be attached to. Once the bridges are built you can 'fill in' the border by constructing walls.
You can specify a draw bridge when designating the brige, when you specify the "raise direction" the dwarves will build a draw bridge. Not useful for dropping creatures into a pit, because they have a "fling" effect when retracted, sending whoever's on the bridge flying.

I think you might be missing one key element. When you 'b'uild a brid'g'e, you can designate what size it is in both x & y directions. So you can build your whole 5x3 bridge in one go. When you're in that screen telling it what size to be (before you pick the building materials) you can designate it as retracting or drawing up in one of the four directions.
I finally got a fortress up and running, and the first immigrant wave had 22! immigrants, and one cat.
Immediately, one of the new immigrants created a legendary puzzle box.
This game was moving kinda too slow for me at the beginning, but now it is just way too fast. I don't think I have enough food production for a whole fortress.
Less exciting than I thought, but still surprising.
The Dragon Ngumost Xobsagus trekked slowly towards my main entrance, feeling confident in his ability to BURNINATE my fortress. I had to hold off on raising the drawbridge because a few dwarves were still outside, running as fast as they could before I would close the gate. As the furnace operator walked on the bridge, I gave the order to pull the bridge lever, which is set in the meeting room. The dragon drew near. I ordered my marksdwarves to their positions behind fortifications, and my swordsquad got ready to defend the entrance. Soon the drawbridge would raise and the dragon would be shot from afar. The Dragon entered the gate, the stupid workdwarves in the meeting hall were too busy with their "party" to help defend themselves. He walks across the bridge onto my stone traps, a few hit him, and he goes unconscious. My Marksdwarves refuse to fire for some reason unbeknownst to me, possibly out of arrows, possibly out of intelligence. I order my swordsquad to approach and finish the kill. As they close in, the dragon awakes and spews a large cone of fire onto them. Surprisingly, no one burns, it must be the steel armor my forgedwarves spent so much time on. After survivng the heat blast, one of my swordsdwarves rush the surprised dragon. It is at this moment that they engage in epic battle: Dwarf and Dragon trade blow for blow! Then the dragon rips his right hand off, then his right arm, then his left foot, then his left leg. The dwarf stood defiantly saying "You shall not pass! Tis only a fleshwound". The dragon was about to strike again when the rest of the squad finally commenced battle and overpowered him with a mighty blow to the head. The brave dwarf who lost his limbs now lies unconcious, knowing he did his duty. The other dumb but lucky dwarves cheer for their victory, leaving the maimed dwarf to lie in pain where he fought his battle. He wil probably die for his heroic actions, since no one seems to care. But I will erect a monument for him, honoring his heroic deeds.
I just realized why no one his helping him. He is brave, but an idiot. He went into battle wielding a feather wood long sword. A wooden sword! Pfft, no monument for him.
Jesus. Immediately, one of the new immigrants created a legendary puzzle box.
So, any bets on how long it will take one of your dwarves to summon a Cenobite?
Obviously this is a joke, but I think it would be cool if Toady went and added some features to make legendaries a bit more... legendary. Not even anything that drastic, but it would be nice if say a weapon might randomly be given a "proficiency" against a type of creature, or if an artifact crown would cause frequent rainfall in the region or something equally random.
So I finally just had a King arrive with his full party and something struck me as odd.
His Queen is listed not as a Noble or a Queen Consort (anywhere but the Noble screen at least), but a Guard. Not just a Guard, she's a Legandary Spearmaster. Is that normal? Are Dwarven Queens always Warrior Queens?
And half his Royal Guard are also Legandary Spearmasters. I do not look forward to when they begin sparring with the existing military.
i always take turtles with me... but, you have to remember to create an internal refuse pile with just shells / bones, etc that pulls from the outside pile.. since everything wipes away each year.

It would be neat from a "haha" perspective, but as a part of the game it wouldn't accomplish much. Masterwork weapons are already retarded effective against whatever they hit, and if they happen to be carried by a champion, show's over.
Really, they're like bringing nukes to Gettysburg.
did toady change up mood made items ? they seem to be able to be used right away, rather then the dwarf carrying them for years. The maker is still alive, but I am able to place this legendary throne somewhere.
Even though there is really no threat of collapse.. are you still designing in specific units? My storage areas are still 13x13 rooms, hallways are 4 wide , steps are a 2x2 block.. with a landing area around them... industrial areas are 6x8 for for buildings in each..
I'm playing my first fortress since the 3d was introduced (many other things to do)... my first immigration wave was in autumn, and brought 8 people. In the spring 29 more people joined. I must be doing something right to attract that many people.
I need to investigate the making metal stuff more though, right now i'm building up a wrestler/wardog defense squad but eventually something more lethal might be needed.
With the way the game is now, to get a metal industry all you really need is a way to melt the metal. Trees work but you will run out of supplies extremely fast.. the only viable option is to have magma.
Goblins will bring you mountains of iron. Seriously, once sieges start you'll start acquiring more than you'll know what to do with. You'll be making bins out of iron just to use it up.
So everything was going fine (thanks for the bridge tips, what I get for not reading all menu options), when I get a message.
My Wrestler has Suffocated to death.
...out of no where. I finally find his corpse, in the barracks. In his bed. On the same tile as his bed/corpse is:
A Mule.
Did my Mule sit on and suffocate my Wrestler? Or was he straggled in a sparring accident?

He was killed in a training injury while sparring in the barracks. It was a crit to the lung and it took him long enough to die for someone to drag him back to a bed.

That's the danger of not having a good safeword.
No, that's the danger of not butchering everything.

i see there is a general utility that required .net.. but that keeps crashing for me
