Looking for a RPG

ChrispyChrispy Registered User regular
edited March 2008 in Games and Technology
In my other thread I was looking for a FPS (unfortunately, I only really got one game out it and it's on the DS).

Now I'm looking for a good RPG. I have a boner for the Dungeon Siege, Legends of Aranna, and DS2. Also, I loved Titan Quest, and Diablo 2. Pretty much what I'm looking for is one where I gain levels from experience with tons of item collecting. I have the games I've mentioned as well as Oblivion.

DS, PS2, Wii, and PC are the systems I have, but as you would guess, PC is the one of choice. Help of any kind will be great.

I haven't ever played it because as far as my tastes go it's complete masochism, but you might wanna look into Etrian Odyssey.

Etrian Odyssey is really only a game if you're looking to punish yourself. Otherwise its pretty classy dungeon crawling. Also, nothing like the games the OP mentioned.

Not sure if you've seen it, but there's Mythos, which you might be able to sneak into the beta and its basically what you're looking for.

Well, it does involve item collecting and experience, and dungeon crawling galore. Just traditional instead of isometric/first-person.

And if that's what you're looking for, consider a PS2 game called Wizardry.

But it makes Etrian Odyssey look like a field day in comparison. Wizardry is ridiculously difficult at times.

You could try FATE. It's a Diablo II clone with a much more light-hearted atmosphere.

Try out Dungeon Runners. It's a neat little casual MMO with the type of gameplay you're describing, and it's also free, so it'll only cost you the time you spend trying it.

    Ssss, Western RPGs?

You already own the only two Western series I've played and liked. If you haven't already, use mods as an excuse to go back to the Elder Scrolls series. Morrowind is especially helped with mods and expansions.

If you're willing wait a long time, there's this Japanese take on Diablo called Soma Bringer for the DS. It will probably get localized at some point, but it's already out in Japan.

I hear the Witcher is good.

I agree on FATE, Mythos and Dungeon Runners.

    I will add:
Throne of Darkness (if you can find it)

or some of the many Diablo 2 mods at the Phrozen Keep

they should keep you busy forever.

EDIT- i will look into this Soma Bringer. i have been waiting for a game similar to D2 on the DS for a long time.

This game looked pretty cool and I played it for a bit, except that my computer would crach and reset after 5-10 minutes every time I fired it up.

I should really give it another go on my new computer.

While I still don't care much for DR, I have a lot of respect for the people behind it. They've improved the game so much over time. If you don't like it now, wait a few months. Chances are another big patch will hit that balances things out, smooths out the gameplay and fixes any bugs (besides the horrible 'membership' glitch, they seem to be ignoring that on purpose...).

I've been playing Mythos. But since it is beta, and it's more than likely that everything will be dumped when it comes out, I stopped put time into because I didn't want to get super far and then lose everything.

I've picked up The Witcher and thought it was something I'd like. For some reason I thought it was an online game that I had to pay monthly for. Don't know why I thought that but that's not true right?

    I'll look into FATE

EDIT: Which Fate are we talking about. I see The Fate, Fate (Wild Tangent) and Fate (2000)

Nope, The Witcher is a single-player RPG, harkening back to the days of olde when exposed breasts were not taboo, and slicing a goblin in twain was a daily occurence.

    Or something like that.

Yeah, I'd say head over to www.mythos.com and see if you can get an invite to the beta (they hand them out every couple of days).

Alternatively, you could beg for an invite on this forum. There's a Mythos thread, and I'm sure that some people probably still have invites to give out. Unfortunately I gave all the ones I had, so I can't help you. :(

    Mythos is awesome though.

I signed up for the mythos beta on their site many months ago when the mythos thread was first made here, and still haven't gotten one. I wouldn't hold your breath for an invite that way.

Trichome, do you have any recommended mods for D2? I never got the hang of digging through mod collection sites.

    Back to Hellfire
    - combines what is good with D1 with D2 as best as it possibly can. v1.10

    ZyEl - Level 10,000 and a crafters dream come true. the Pandora's Box of D2's mods. v1.09b & 1.09d

    Battle for Elements
    - A lot of neat changes and additions in this mod. v1.10

    Median 2008
    - Beautiful mod and for version 1.11b. All new Skills too.

Eastern Sun - Classic and what got me into the D2 mod scene. Gotta respect ES. v1.11b

    Sir_Generals Rune Mod
    - Simple but very addictive mod. My personal favorite. v1.09

There are many more at the phrozen keep.
So many to pick it's hard to play/pick just one.
Charsi's Forge is another good site for the D2 mod scene.
also check out #phrozen-keep on the GameSurge IRC server if you have any questions/interests on anything regarding Diablo or Diablo mods.

If you haven't done so already, you should hack your way through Icewind Dale. It's one of the Black Isle D&D CRPGs, but very light on the roleplaying compared to, say, Baldur's Gate or Planescape. Your characters are completely customizable, and the process of levelling up is quite satisfying: you don't have the variety of skill trees that you did in Titan Quest, but there's still a real difference in effectiveness from one level to the next - at the start of the game, you're getting your ass kicked by goblins, but by the end, you're butchering giants and demons. The combat is as simple or as complicated as you want to make it: I tended to send out scouts to lure enemies back into a hail of arrows, finishing them off with whacking great axes when they got close enough; some other heathens prefer to dick around with that useless magic stuff. And dear God, is there ever loot. Randomized loot, which is the best kind. Buckets full of it.

so be it. good choice. that is why i got BTH too. i can't stand walking in D1.

you can run just like in D2.

onyx (creator of Back to Hellfire) spent a few years perfecting this mod and finally released it to the public recently. He did a great job and i think you will love BTH.

He made it so all the classic D1 characters including a monk and the secret hidden Hellfire character the Blood Wizard are playable.

PM me if you ever want to TCP/IP a mod.

Be sure to read all you can about it on the Back to Hellfire site especially the Recipes and FAQ sections.

Here is an interview with onyx that is worth a read too.

Alright, I've played it for a few hours, and have come to the conclusion that this mod is even better than I could have hoped; the best parts of D1, and the UI improvements from D2.

I'm unlikely to take you up on the multiplayer, though. My internet connection does not work well with games.

if you have a hard time playing MP due to router issues etc. check out Hamachi. It is a very easy program to use and gives a virtual IP other than your original IP.

Doesn't really have the "random loot dropped by the thousands of monster you kill" vibe that most diablo-likes have, but is a good game in general.
