I mean, I've played in campaigns like that, before. Nothing wrong with it; it can be a lot of fun. And if the rest of the people you're playing with play like that, too, you're going to need to do something to level the playing field.
I'm kidding. I was just imagining something like this:

Well, I'd rather have an actual dedicated D&D thread to ask it in, but so far there's none, and creating a new one seems like overkill.
Still, it's something I never do. It's more because I just got into a game, and the DM is encouraging it because "we will need it". And considering what he's told me, I believe him.
I'd support this forum. I dont know how much I'd post, since I havent played table top RPGs for about a decade, but I'd definetely check it out. Since there doesnt seem to be a technical reason not to have it, I'd like to see a trial run at least.

Anyway, glad to see support for this idea. I look forward to hearing from alpha again on this, although from the way the forums have been behaving in the past day or so it looks like he'll have his hands full.

Twenties and Tabletops.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I heartily support this decision. I mean what's there to lose? And we can name it something D&D-ish, like Natural 20s Inn. Or just plain ol' Natural Twenties.
Oh look, a user is being insular and stupid about the sub forums other than his particular favourite without having even tried to post in them. What a fucking shock.
Oh look. Pheezers being angry because someone does not agree with him. What a fucking shock.
Okay, it's been said several times, but not in a succinct, direct way: I see a ton of people clamoring for a tabletop gaming forum, and I don't recognize any of those names as people who have ever tried to sustain any tabletop gaming-related threads in G&T.
Maybe they just feel intimidated? How many comic book topics were there in SE++ and D&D combined? Like 6, MAYBE 7 if you count a discussion on books including graphic novels? And now look at Graphic Violence. It's a thriving community all its' own.
I mean, I've played in campaigns like that, before. Nothing wrong with it; it can be a lot of fun. And if the rest of the people you're playing with play like that, too, you're going to need to do something to level the playing field.
Maybe make it a guideline. Don't ask how to munchkin. It's like asking where to gank in WoW, or what cheats to use in G&T. We might tell you, but now you're branded as a dishonest and lazy player.

I wouldn't exactly call it a "thriving" community; it has less topics than Linksville. As far as I can gather, the only reason it exists is because comics are like the life-blood of Whippy. If we're going by number of threads, Anime has both Comics and Tabletop Games beat by a longshot.
It's really a point of where do you draw the line? What about those who play collectable card games, should they get their own forum too? Maybe we should have seperate forums for Console and PC games. I'm just not seeing a reason to make seperate forums for everything just because some people don't feel comfortable posting out of their niche.

Eh, I think it has its place. There's always theoretical powergaming for statistical hilarity, like Pun-Pun, or just general tips on getting that little edge out of technical exploitation of existing rules text. Besides, anything we can come up with is automatically shot down by a "no" from the DM.

If you don't like powergaming, just stay out of the power-tweak thread. :P
Obviously, it's not to everyone's tastes, but a lot of people play in campaigns where you'd better have a very combat-able character, or you're just not going to last very long.

I mean for the sole edge of being a complete dick and getting the most out of the least. Not like "So how do I play my half-Orc Fighter to maximum effectiveness?" but "How do I get through this campaign without drawing my sword ONCE and still get gold?"

I think that there will not be too many posts regarding the request of information on how to "Powergame" in the forum, after all: Those who make the game on threads will have read them and know exactly who it is not to invite to the game.

Why all the hate? Explain that to me. It's just a different way to play; there's nothing wrong with it. Just like there's nothing wrong with Hack 'n' Slash, pure RP, or RP/HnS mixed campaigns. Goddamn. It's a fucking game, all that matters is that you're having fun. :P

If you are looking for hate from me you won't find it. I simply made what I felt was an accurate observation.
I will say that I feel that as many games have come to ruin as not from players trying to"game the system" and take arms when given hands.
My own style is typically that good RP and a solid in character plan will win the day over a "tricked out" character build every day of the week. "Pointfucking" (as some of my freinds like to call it) will only result in more deadly encounters in games I run. The profit will be no higher than if the characters are ballanced.
I also find that combat specialst characters, being one trick ponies, are quite boring. Your milage may vary.

Fine, great, good for you; but I get really sick of the attitude I get coming off of a lot of players who are heavy RP or pure RP that somehow their way of playing is inherently superior to a power-gamer's way of playing. I mean, don't get me wrong, I would much rather play in an RP-heavy campaign than in a power-gaming one, but that's not a matter of RP-heavy being better than power-gaming; it's a matter of taste, and that's it. Something like how I like drinking vodka straight, whereas many people think it tastes like rubbing alcohol.
a rule against asking for munchkin advice is kinda silly
that is what some people enjoy doing in certain games.
The forum should probably be inclusive..and rules favoring one play style over another kinda defeats that
if powergaming threads do magically massively overwhelm the board, then mods could consolidate and do something like have a "powergamer's tips and strategies" single thread.

My whole point was that I feel it would be self regulating. Thsoe who do ask for advice with the intent of being abusive would get squashed quickly in the next [Game On] thread.

do you have any doubt that a competent DM could not control thier game?
like, if someone wants to run a hack and slash campain, they can. The people involved should muchkin and negelect the other aspects of their charactre and gameplay. To some extent. You get to level 5 and are hitting for 1/5 the damnage of everyone else... well that is not good.
The other way would get retarded too. It would not be fun for one or 2 people where as everyone else is having a good time.
so.. whould it be a good idea when starting a campaign to describe which it will be, and mabey get some concesus from the players, yes. Is it nessisary to legislate it? no, that is dumb.
yes, lets not bicker about hypothetical topics ina hypothetical subforum just yet guys. It will be up to the hypothetical mods to decide what will be hypothetically off limts.
Considering that I threw together a tabletop forum that currently has all of four threads, I'd say the odds of a subforum are slim to none around here.

As neato as that is, I think the point is that people want it on the PA boards. I mean, i could go to Librarium Online for 40K stuff or Wizard's forum for D&D talk, but it just doesn't feel right. Personally, I love it here and I feel weird when I'm on another board, like I'm cheating on my first love or something equally retarded.
If people want a subforum, why are there only three tabletop-related threads in G&T? Tabletop gaming is on topic there.
Start some threads! Show your interest for tabletop stuff!
To quote The Muffin Man, "Maybe they just feel intimidated?" I know I do going into the swirling mass that is G&T. But I primarily chill in AC, which has a very organized society and isn't as busy as G&T.
With a place dedicated specifically to Tabletop goodies, people could feel free to hop into things at a much slower pace.
