IGN is entitled to their opinion, but I disagree with a few things in the review.

    - They give it 8.5 for graphics, when I believe it's the prettiest Wii game to date. They talk about graphics that are "definitely lacking in some areas", but provide no concrete examples. In fact, having played the game, I have no idea what areas they're talking about. Melee, where they DID give specific examples of some jaggies (etc) scored a 9.0 for graphics.

    - "character animations, while speedy, typically ignore the laws of physics, weight, and momentum": this sentence makes no sense to me. Are they confused because different characters fall at different speeds and such?

    - "The cartridge-fast speed in which you can navigate Brawl's character and stage selection screens is marred by a 20-second front-end load, a truth that clashes with the majority of other Nintendo-published titles." In an era where the Wii has the fastest load times by far of any current-gen console, it seems silly to complain about a 20 second (it doesn't seem that long, I thought it was maybe 10 seconds) one-time load at the start of the game. Once the game is booted, you don't even notice it's running on a disc (except when loading the large custom levels). I just don't understand why it would get flak for this, especially considering the average 360 and PS3 game can take far longer to start up, and has significant load times at every juncture of the game; and these load times are very rarely even mentioned in the review for such games! It's just a part of gaming now, so to see this comment about such a small, insignificant number is very puzzling to me.

    - "Nintendo devotees will argue that [SSE] is but a complementary piece to the meat and potatoes of the game and they will be right, and yet that does not mean we can give it a free pass." Does this mean that the game would have been better off without any single-player options? I'm honestly curious, because most amazing 1P games are perfectly fine without any multiplayer options (Ocarina of Time, eg). And Brawl never makes you touch SSE if you're so inclined. I'm confused why "included, but not as good" is actually worse than "nothing included at all". It's actually similar to the Wiimote control scheme. It's included, but some people argue that the GC controller scheme is vastly superior. Does this mean Brawl should be punished for offering an inferior Wiimote control scheme? By this logic, I believe you could make a case for it.

    - "The biggest problem with the mode, which to its credit does support two-player cooperative games, is that Sora has merely kidnapped the control schemes designed for a 3D fighter and transplanted them into vertical and horizontal-scrolling platform-heavy stages. While these [control] schemes are perfectly suited for fast-paced fights, they are only passable for more traditional levels [in SSE]." I just wanted to say I disagree with this. I've had no problems playing SSE and feeling like the controls were very well suited. :) This is an objective thing, though.

    - "Also, Mr. Sakurai recently confirmed that there are no plans to offer any new Nintendo-developed stages or characters by way of WiiConnect24, a huge oversight in our opinion." I'm not sure they really thought this through much. It's a pretty difficult thing to add DLC to a fighting game, especially one played online where no one is forced to download all the latest stuff. For other types of games it works quite well, but a fighter isn't one of them. Stages... maybe, but characters, no. This is my opinion.

    ---

In my opinion, I think even if Nintendo would have hand-delivered changes/fixes to each of their complaints, they would have found other faults with the game. It's just one of those games where no one will be happy (why didn't they include character X? is a good example, and Bozon mentions that as a complaint in his closing statment).

I'm mostly content with the score, but I'm not too content with the... philosophy (?) they took behind some of the components in the game. Granted, I think Brawl is a better game than both Melee (9.6) and Mario Galaxy (9.7), so I wish they'd try to be more consistent with their scores. :)

Really? Outside of the one-time load at the start of the game, and load times for huge custom stages, what load times do you not like? From the main menu, you can get into a Brawl as fast as Melee, including character selection and any non-custom stage loading. And after a match, I find the results screen -> character select transition is actually faster than Melee (noticeably so).

Interesting. Most of my matches were 1v1, and I didn't have problems with them. The few 4 player matches we played didn't seem much worse, but maybe under certain circumstances (item/character/stage combinations) it takes longer than normal. And maybe that's why IGN noticed it so much, since I imagine they played on crazy stages with full items and 4 players almost all the time.

    I don't know.

EDIT - Watching the video review now. They say Ike replaces Roy and is basically just like him (he's not... but okay, I can see how you might think that), but then they say that Fox, Falco, and Wolf all have the exact same moves, smashes, properties, and are basically just model/palette swaps. None of their moves look at all alike! I don't understand this at all. The characters LOOK similar, because they're all bipedal animals. Some of their B moves look similar (they all have a gun, I guess, and they all have a reflector-ish thing). That's... about it, though. Maybe they didn't play with these characters at all?

I still can't really get over the SSE dislike, though (which was mentioned with even more fervor in the video review). I mean... Brawl is a fighting game. Fighting games have never, ever had good 1P modes. It's just not how the genre works. So... Nintendo wanted to try to fix this, so they develop a 10+ hour mode which traverses a wide variety of worlds, incorporates tons of bosses from Nintendo's history (not seen anywhere else in the game), introduce RPG-like elements to your characters, and tie it all together with FMVs that would floor any Nintendo fan. Then, to make sure they don't step on any toes, they make sure that no one ever has to play it if they don't want to (to unlock the full list of stages and characters).

Then, IGN is fine with saying that the mode isn't all that great, and they wanted a better 1P mode.

Like what? What other fighting game has a great 1P mode? What exactly did you have in mind, anyway? And you know that if they just didn't put the mode in at all, they would say that Brawl is a great multiplayer game, but it's a shame they didn't add any 1P modes to the package.

I think you shouldn't be able to complain about this particular issue until you come up with a better solution by yourself first. ;-) It just seems silly to me to dock any fighting game for having either a weak 1P mode (which SSE is not anyway), or NO 1P mode, simply because the genre is like that.

Argh, I'm overthinking this. Just bugs me is all. I don't really care as much as I'm letting on. I'll go to bed now. :)

I went back to melee recently and noticed the load times were longer than I remember them. It might be because I'm playing on the wii. They're not bad though and the smash brawl load videos aren't that bad.

So what's the deal with this Gamestop tournament thing? The only rules I know are that it's the starting roster, and that registration closes at my store around 8:30.

Is it Final Destination only? Single or double elimination? Free for all or 1v1, or some wacky combination of the two (i.e. free for all in tournie matches, 1v1 in semi-finals/finals)? Do you select a character each match, or do you select one character going in and stick with him/her the whole time, or are you made to do the random-character select each game?

This stuff will affect who I practice as going in, as well as who I choose to try out in the tournament, if possible...

They also complained about loading times (on a blog or a podcast, I forget), which is... beyond me. The loading times in this game are nearly instant most of the time (3 seconds or less). The longest load time I've ever seen has been maybe... 10 seconds (?) for one of the larger custom-made levels.

If you play multiplayer games not on wifi the loading gets much longer.

It's not unheard of to have 20 second loading times in 4 player matches. It is noticeable, but not a huge deal I suppose.

When you jump, your horizontal speed isn't based at all on your ground speed. Probably most noticable with Sonic. Keeps you from leaping FD in a single bound, captain falcon style.

A handful of launch(-ish) Wiii had this problem where after several months (fifteen, in my case, but I'm not exactly playing the thing every day) the GPU starts to come unseated from the motherboard and you get visual artifacting on the screen (randomly dispersed black or colored pixels, etc) or other weird visual glitches. It's far more noticeable in 480p than in 480i (of course).

I wouldn't be too worried about it. You're only a few days out of warranty and it's a very popular hardware issue. When it happened to me, they turned my Wii around pretty quickly. I had just picked up Kororinpa so I didn't send it back right away either, and it didn't seem to get too much worse. You might want to start the RMA process now, but not actually send it back until after you've had enough time with Brawl.

I called them and they e-mailed me a shipping label and I sent it back today. The one complication is that about a year ago, the Wii got dropped from about three feet. It didn't do any actual damage but part of the plastic has a small crack in it, and the guy on the phone stressed that "physical damage" wasn't covered.

I mean, I know that the drop a long time ago didn't cause the current problem, but I'm still worried that I'll get screwed.

So, does anybody know if when unlocking characters, if you can "double up" on the requirements and unlock more than one at a time? For example:
Marth is unlocked by beating Classic mode. Luigi is unlocked by beating Classic with no continues. And Capt. Falcon is unlocked by beating Classic on Normal in under 12 minutes. So finally, let's say I beat Classic, on Normal, in under 12 minutes, and use no continues. Which new challenger will approach me? If it's only one character (say Capt. Falcon), will the other two not come out after just two VS matches? Or would I have to satisfy their requirements again?

Yeah, that's how Melee worked, they just kept coming after you until you won. The catch here is, does fulfilling multiple requirements all at once flag everybody as unlocked, or just one.

I guess I could just fire up Melee with a fresh save and see who comes out when I beat classic mode with Mario: Jigglypuff, Dr. Mario, or both.

I only ask because I really want to play SSE. But, I also really want to have to fight for the secret characters, and not just have them join up. So I pretty much want the fastest and most efficient way of unlocking them as possible.
