It's not at all fair to compare Halo maps to Smash maps
This. Maps in FPS games especially highly competitive online ones like Halo are large and require a lot of balancing. A Smash stage is usually a series of platforms.
I'd have liked more N64/Melee stages via download, but whatever. Can't win 'em all.
I love that the IGN review talks about bad load times, and here I am watching 10 seconds of the video review before waiting for it to buffer. /irony

So, I called up my local GameStop to find out if they're doing a midnight release, which they are. I also asked how many preorders they have, so as to estimate how early I should get there.
I really don't expect there to be many problems getting this game on launch day. Getting it at midnight or at a Gamestop or EB or wherever might be a challenge, but I really don't expect Walmart or Best Buy to run out. Of course, how people said the same thing about the Wii....

They have over 200 preorders. Craaaaaap.
That means that they will have at least 200+ copies. Gamestop always fills it's preorders. Had you not pre-ordered though your reaction would have been acceptable.

Getting a copy isn't a problem, I've had it reserved for well over half a year now. It's getting on the ungodly long line and waiting it out that's gonna test my will. Not even my Pokeymans can occupy me for that long.
It's gonna suck even more than the Deathly Hallows midnight release, at least that was indoors. No way in hell are 200 people fitting inside a GameStop.

True. I'm waiting with a buddy but he sucks at Pokmemon so I'm hoping the union room will be full.
Also I hope to have a Zune with like 15 movies on it by that point.

Same. I'll know full well that they'll have it, so it's just a matter of getting the guy working there to go fish out a copy. My mom's good friends with one of the managers there as well, so if worst comes to worst I can hope that she's got a shift Saturday night.
It seems some of the stuff in the review is just being mentioned to let people know what to expect. Some of the stuff like the unrealistic physics isn't being mentioned because it's a bad thing. It's just being mentioned.
I think Bozon said it best in his "Another Take" section of the review...
"It isn’t so much that Nintendo "failed" in a specific section of the Smash experience, but rather there was untapped potential that is visible through the small cracks in the game design."
I think that's the thing with Smash. There is no limit to how many characters, features, levels you could add, so almost everyone will have something they wish was added.
At the same time, I'm not sure they knocked off that .5 for any of those gripes or anything else that was inlcuded. The frustrating Nintendo online philosophy (no voice chat/rankings/leaderboards/DLC), and maybe a couple of long load times. .5 isn't very much. (Personally, I don't think any game should ever get a 10).
Also, comparing the 9.5 score to whatever Melee got is stupid. 2 different games at 2 different times lead to different opinions. No matter what you want it to be, this review is this guys opinion and that's it. Why anyone will take offence is beyond me. This game will be fucking amazing, and that's it. One of the best games ever. They even said so in the review. No one is disputing that.
I dunno, "small cracks in the game design" seems like a poor word choice, and they're taking some jabs at the game. They're entitled to do it, of course, but they are mentioning these things with the intention of saying they're bad (the so-called "unrealistic" physics, etc). They're not just mentioning them for the sake of doing so.
Also, keep in mind I'm not taking any offense at the review. The review didn't rape my mother. I totally understand it's just one person's opinion and he's entitled to say whatever he wants. I'm just expressing my confusion over some of the points they raised, and saying I don't think they have much merit behind them. At the end of the day, if no one provides any reasoning or this topic just gets dropped, I'll be fine going back to my normal life. But it seems like some other people here are equally confused.

Actually, I talked to the guy behind the counter at my local Gamestop, and what they're doing at the midnight release, at least at my branch, is "pre-ringing" the orders. That is, any time after 10 PM, you go to the counter, hand over your money, and get a receipt. After 12, they start handing out copies to people with receipts. So you should probably be able to get the game in a timely manner after 12 even if you haven't been camping out, because they're going to zip through the line of campers (relatively speaking).

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
So what's Gamestop doing for its midnight launch? Do I actually have to get there early and wait to get a copy? Or is it just a question of how long past midnight I have to wait in line?

Seeing as how it only takes about ~3 months for Bungie to shit out a new map, I can compare them, since both games are equally 'competitive'.
The concept of DLC is overrated and shouldn't be crammed into every game. There's plenty of stages in Brawl. I think we can deal with it. You don't see people downrating SSB or SSBM or Goldeneye for no DLC maps, I don't see why this applies to games today. Review the game you fucking have in your hands, not the one in your head.
and as cloudman says below, there's a level editor anyway, so it's not like you can't make anymore stages.

They have over 200 preorders. Craaaaaap.
This post inspired me to call up CameCrazy and ask about their plans again (Last time, which was a few weeks ago, they said they had a 99.99% chance of doing one). Apparnetly they're bringing in some extra TVs and having a"walk in or out whenever you like" Melee party starting at 8PM. I got a similar number for preorders, they said they'd definately meet demand.

It's retarded to whine about there not being enough stages.
It's retarded to whine about there not being enough stages.
There is a stage builder for a reason
True dat. Doesn't the fact that you can download your friends... or stranger's maps satisfy the requirement for DLC?
Also, Alaska Gamestops = not doing midnight release. Screw them...
Also, walmart is not open past 12 up here either...
Sunday morning it is, I'll skip church like a good heathen and go grab my 1 jewish friend, and together have our traditional jewglypuf vs hitlerchu match.

The stage builder is great for getting new stage layouts but it's disappointing how generic they are. They should at least have let us use the backgrounds from the main stages.
Err... what do you think the odds are me finding a copy in a random store (EB Games, GameStop, Target, etc) Sunday afternoon without a preorder? I don't quite have my driver's liscense yet and I wouldn't want to annoy my dad with a dud expetition.

I'd say the odds are pretty good that you'll be able to get a copy from a big store like Target.

The 2d backgrounds are also really good at being disorienting if you lose sight of the main playing field.
I'm 95% certain that the Wal-Mart down the street from my house will have it out Saturday night.
If they don't, I'll just head into town on Sunday morning. We have a shopping center with two EBStops, a Target, and a Meijer. At least one copy of Brawl will be findable between the four, I'm certain.

I'm certain that because you have so many viable options, you will get screwed over somehow. But good luck.
I'm going to the midnight release, and I'll be playing with my little brother. This will be fun.
The last big Nintendo title I can remember people having trouble getting ahold of on launch was Ocarina of Time. Maybe Pokemon Yellow.
Every single other title there have been dozens and dozens at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and the like.
If your only option is Gamestop, then preorder. But c'mon, it can't be your only option.
This of course does not apply to systems.
I can go to several places but Gamestop is full of hot women.
Hot nerdy women.
You see my dilemma.
Well, go there anyways, but hitting on women trying to get home as quick as possible and shower off the stank of 200+ sweaty neck beards waiting in line for Brawl=not advisable.
So go there when it's not busy. If it happens to be Sunday morning, I can almost guarantee they won't have a copy. They probably are getting in enough for preorders plus maybe thirty more. So if you do want to try Sunday morning at Gamestop be there at opening.
So, are we really getting this game everywhere on sunday? I just assumed March 9th was the day it would be available at Nintendo World and the like, and most of us would have to wait until tuesday or wednesday like usual. I need to call my EB.
That won't be the case for me. I talked to a friend who works there (local Supercenter) and learned that it won't be stocked prior to midnight, and that there will be no one stocking video games during the graveyard shift.
That same friend preordered his at EBStop, and another friend that is going with us preordered it as well, but doesn't own a Wii. He had no intentions of buying it, but reserved the game so he was guaranteed a spot in the tournament :P So I'll have his reservation as a way of trying to get it at midnight (provided they get enough copies in).
My odds are looking up.
