The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
The best deal seems to be the Patriots giving Moss a three-year, $27 million contract.
The Falcons gave Michael Turner a six-year, $35 million deal, and Cut Dunn.
The Jets signed Alan Faneca and Damien Woody to five-year contracts for $40 million and $26 million, respectively. Now they have four 1st rounders on the O-line.
The Vikings made Bernard Berrian, who has 13 touchdowns, and never had a 1,000 yards season the 4th highest paid receiver in the league with a six-year, $42 million contract.
You want more? Well, I spent two fucking hours writing an OP and then Firefox crashed, so kiss my ass.
Big Ben got a 8-year, $102 million deal, too. Outside of that, there really weren't many huge moves.
How about the draft, huh? Probably one of the worst QB drafts in years, but ESPN is still hyping the shit out of Matt Ryan (who threw 19 picks his senior year). Miami's still desperately trying to get a decent deal to get out of the first pick because they know he's not worth that pick, and Darren McFadden could drop to #4 with the Raiders (who resigned Justin Fargas after a fantastic year) or more likely the #6 pick with the Jets because the other teams have solid running backs as it is (Ronnie Brown in Miami, Stephen Jackson in St. Louis, Atlanta needs a QB, Larry Johnson in KC). That combined with the Jets' big-time O-line changes could mean a huge rookie year for him, even bigger than Adrian Peterson because he probably won't get injured in his first year like Peterson is prone to do.
What this draft is loaded with is defense, running backs, and offensive linemen. If Miami stays at #1, they'll probably pick up Chris Long (of Howie fame), who looks like one of the best, most complete defensive ends in a long time. #2 for the Rams will either be Jake Long or Glenn Dorsey. For some reason I still think they'll have faith in Orlando Pace and pick up Glenn Dorsey. #3 will probably be Matt Ryan. Personally, I think they should wait until the second round and pick up Joe Flacco (4200yds, 23TD, 5INT last season and the strongest arm in the draft), but after the PR disaster of Mike Vick they don't have many options.
Don't forget the big time money the Jets also spent on OLB Calvin Pace as well trading a 3rd and a 5th for DT Kris Jenkins while Mangini continues to completley blow up his defense as he installs the 3-4.
The Browns, Vikings, and 49ers are also competing for the Dan Snyder offseason award.
Vikes spent big money on Bernard Berrian and Madieu Williams, the Browns traded for DTs Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers, and signed Donte Stallworth to a big deal in addition to re-signing Derek Anderson to a big deal.
Cleveland now has no draft picks until round 4 by the way.
The 9ers completley overpaid Justin Smith, they also signed washed up Rams reciever THE REVEREND Issac Bruce.
My Jags have been busy, Jerry Porter left skidmarks in his rush to get out of Oakland and into Florida as he signed a deal to become Garrard's #1 target. They also signed Drayton Florence to give them a potent nickel package. Jacksonville trades away a 6th rounder for former top 10 pick Troy Williamson, a project with world class speed and worse hands than captain hook. They also send Marcus Stroud to the Bills for a 3rd and a 5th.
Ernest Wilford and Justin Smiley sign with Miami, Lance Briggs re-signs with Chicago, Todd Collins stays in Washington, Billy Volek in San Diego, Cleo Lemon becomes the backup in Jacksonville. Antawn Odom signs with Cincinatti, Travis LaBoy with Arizona. The Titans also lost Jordan Gross to St. Louis, although they did sign Alge Crumpler.
Hey at least you get the support of an unwavering and classy fanbase.
Pretty much playing for the Raiders is fine if you just want to slack off. I'd love to make a ton of money and have no one really expect me to do anything special.
'Malkor, why'd you stop running after the linebacker when your QB fumbled the ball in the 4th quarter?' 'Goddamnit I play for the Raiders.
Don't forget the big time money the Jets also spent on OLB Calvin Pace as well trading a 3rd and a 5th for DT Kris Jenkins while Mangini continues to completley blow up his defense as he installs the 3-4.
Jets are out of their damn mind. coughSeanGilbertcough
Jenkins reportedly finished last year at 390 lbs.
Lions got Leigh Bodden from the Browns, one of the most underrated CBs in the league.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin is going to get a 4 year/$21 million extention.
Rams paid 6/36 to snag LG Jason Bell out of Tennessee after injuries devestated their line last year. They also paid $14M to KICKER Josh Brown following the retirement of Jeff Wilkins.
Bears traded QB Brian Griese to Tampa Bay for a conditional 6th rounder, leaving Kyle Orton and The SexCannon as the only QBs on the roster.
Steelers signed RB Mewelde Moore (Vikings) to a 3/5 deal. Moore instantly becomes the Steelers' best receiving back and likely will get 3rd down duty.
Saints signed DE Bobby McCray (Jags) to a 5/20 deal. They desparately need a pass rush to help out their secondary. They also improved that secondary by signing CB Randall Gay (Pats) to a 4/18 deal.
Combine winners:
Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn. Ran a 4.57, meaning opens the possibility of him moving to OLB in a 3-4. Probably moved himself up from the 1st to 2nd round.
James Hardy, WR, Indiana. One of those "best player you've never heard of types," the 6-6, 220-lb Hardy was drawing comparisons to Plaxico Burress all over the RCA Dome. He ran 4.47, excellent for his size, and reportedly has a 42" vertical.
Aquib Talib, CB, Kansas. The 6-2, 205-lb CB continued the tear he started in the Orange Bowl, posting a very solid 4.47 and a superb 38" vertical. Solidly established as the #1 big CB in the draft.
Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois. Ran a 4.45 while putting up 26 reps in the bench press, displaying a great combination of speed and power.
Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina. His 4.24 tied the all-time best at a combine, and is faster than the best time attributed to Deion Sanders (though still slower than Bo Jackson). Johnson is no track star - he led Conference USA with 3,005 all purpose yards - and likely cemented himself as a 2nd round pick.
Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan St. The 6-2, 216-lb WR turned in a 4.40 time and didn't drop a pass in any drill.
Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii. By far the most accurate QB at the combine, Brennan was putting the ball in the perfect spot nearly every time. His arm strength is still a major concern, but in a short-medium passing game his accuracy would be a great fit. Strange how much easier passing is when there aren't 3 Georgia Bulldogs in your face as soon as you hit your plant foot.
Losers:
Mario Manningham, WR, Michigan. Coming in a reputation as a deep threat, he ran a terrible 4.59 and cost himself any shot at the 1st round.
Mike Hart, RB, Michigan. Ran a 4.67, and finished 2nd to last with a 28" vert. A great, tough kid, but the draft is too deep at RB for him to warrant a high pick with those numbers.
John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame. For a receiving TE who was projected by some as a 1st rounder, 4.89 is awful. His 4.28 in the 20 yard shuttle was the slowest among TEs.
Ali Highsmith, LB, LSU. He reportedly had 4.6 speed, which is good for a LB. He ran a 4.96, which is poor for a DE.
Mike Mayock, Analyst, NFL Network. I don't know what this guy is thinking. He has Sedrick Ellis as the #1 DT above Glenn Dorsey. He has Mendenhall as the #1 RB above McFadden. He has Early Doucet as the #2 WR above DeSean Jackson and Malcom Kelly.

Good post. I'm not sure how anyone wouldn't have McFadden as the #1 RB.
So it's confirmed that Favre is retiring. Also it looks like Green Bay will stick with Rodgers instead of hauling in some other new QB. Good call there I believe, he looked damned good the few games I've seen him in.
the free agent QB class this year is abysmal anyway.
Lemon, Collins, and Volek were (sadly) the best out there and they have all already been taken.
At this point you're looking at David Carr, Byron Leftwich, Quin Gray...

Well, now it's finally time for the current Eternal Favre Backup to show what he's learned. Rodgers is no Favre. I hold no illusions of that. But from what I've seen of him, we'll be able to move forward.

I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.
Tell that to anyone drafted by the Lions. At least you get to live in California if you're drafted by the Raiders.
Wow, I get to work for the worst organization in sports, AND I get to live in the metro Detroit area? SIGN ME UP!
Hey, fuck you buddy. Detroit proper is a shithole, the metro area can be just fine.
The Lions signed an agreement when their franchise was formed to never succeed. They're contractually obligated. Also, come on. The Pirates are the worst organization in sports. At least the Lions still sell out games.
I think the league in general is moving towards having no major free-agent or traded QBs. I mean, look at Cleveland. They could pretty easily trade Brady Quinn for probably a first-round pick, but it's looking like they're going to keep him and his fat contract just because there's such a premium on QB play.
I could be wrong, I wouldn't be surprised if they did trade him before draft day, since it really doesn't make fiscal sense to keep him.
Mock Draft time:
1. Miami - Chris Long, DE
2. St. Louis - Glenn Dorsey, DT
3. Atlanta - Matt Ryan, QB
4. Oakland Raiders - Sedrick Ellis, DT
5. Kansas City - Jake Long, OT
6. New York Jets - Darren McFadden, RB
7. New England - Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB
8. Baltimore - Ryan Clady, OT
9. Cincinnati - Philip Merling, DE
10. New Orleans - Keith Rivers, LB
11. Buffalo - DeSean Jackson, WR
12. Denver - Dan Connor, LB
13. Carolina - Jonathan Stewart, RB
14. Chicago - Jeff Otah, OT
15. Detroit - Leodis McKelvin, DB
16. Arizona - Aqib Talib, DB
17. Minnesota - Derrick Harvey, DE
18. Houston - Chris Williams, OT
19. Philadelphia - Malcolm Kelly, WR
20. Tampa Bay - Kentawn Balmer, DT
21. Washington - Quentin Groves, DE
22. Dallas - Felix Jones, RB
23. Pittsburgh - Brandon Albert, OG
24. Tennessee - Limas Sweed, WR
25. Seattle - Rashard Mendenhall, RB
26. Jacksonville - Calais Campbell, DE
27. San Diego - Kenny Phillips, DB
28. Dallas - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, DB
29. San Francisco - Devin Thomas, WR
30. Green Bay - Sam Baker, OT
31.
32. New York - Reggie Smith, DB
That's pretty much how I see things falling into place. Outside of Atlanta, I think most teams (particularly Miami, Chicago, and Baltimore) can be patient enough to just wait until the second or third round to make a run at the QB position.

Yeah, Dan Connor's probably a stretch, too, but I still think they fit in well enough that it'd happen. Cincinnati's only other legit option is Keith Rivers at linebacker, but their new defensive coordinator is big on the 3-4 and Merling's a pretty solid fit as a 3-4 DE who can still play well in a 4-3 during the transition, while Rivers is probably too small for that kind of system. NO could go for a cornerback and let Keith Rivers drop to Denver, especially after picking up Jonathan Vilma, but that would mean admitting that Jason David was a failure (and spending a big pick on a corner, which they never do). Denver doesn't really seem to have that many needs outside of linebacker and defensive lineman, but they've already invested big picks on their line so I figure they'd reach for Dan Connor, who's probably more likely to drop to the low/mid-twenties.
My bengals picked up Antwan Odom (considered best DL free agent this offseason by many), so that's good. I assume we'll drop down into the 2nd half of the first round like we have most of the time under Marvin. If we don't we'll pick someone terrible or good but who will be in prison in under two years. I hope we go OL or DE/OLB with that first pick if someone decent is there.

The best thing the Bengals did this month was back out of that DeWayne Robertson trade.
I'd blame Callahan more than Gannon really, he got horribley outcoached in that game. Bucs players said afterwards that Gruden had told them what 15 plays he expected Callahan to script to start the game and that he was basically right.

Gruden knew the plays because he was the coach of the Raiders in the years immediatley prior and Callahan was his offensive coirdinator.
And aside from that, teams have been stealing signals since forever. The only difference in the Spygate was that the Pats were using videotape and Mangini called them on it.
