March is Intergalactic Shmuppreciation Month... Play a Shmup and Show Some Love.
Shmup Month is here. No, this is not my website or podcast.
But I do have one if anyone wants to see it? ^__^'
There's a contest to win a Japanese PS2 and some podcasts that drop the Shmup Love by reviewing a bunch of shooters and recommending rare ones to snag up.
It's not really my thing. I just play when I can, but I did like the idea of a Month of appreciating a genre of gaming. This year I will be picking up that Triggerheart game. Last years I busted out my Dreamcast and played some Cannons Spike.
Post up some of your favorite Shmups and let folk know about Shmups they *should* know about.
Now... if someone would fire up a J-RPG month, THAT I'd be all about.
"... you know I never really stopped to think people lurk in these forums. Wow, thats weird. People I have never met nor will ever talk to are reading about me not masturbating." -aquabat, PA Forums
How's this a bad month? Last year it was kinda on the fly because there was a lot of discussion regarding it. So they decided to make March the official month.
With the release of Triggerheart, it seems like it's pretty well timed.

The hell is Nanostray 2? Damn it and its delays... not that I really liked the first one, but still, I've always been curious about the sequel. Besides, Ketsui DS is the one to really be looking for.
I think I'll actually get around to beating REZ HD..... if that counts as a shmup.
Still haven't been blown away by why this game gets such hype.

I can't get enough of trigger heart exelica. There are days I'm glad I can rotate the screen and run it on my 22inch lcd.
I think I'll actually get around to beating REZ HD..... if that counts as a shmup.

If you're not already, make sure to play in a dark room with either headphones on or a properly configured 5.1 setup with a reverb setting on, plus rumble enabled and at least one other controller as a Trance Vibrator. If you're not feeling it by the end of the first level, it might just Not Be For You, but Area 5 (which you have to unlock) is far and away the best part of the game and possibly the best final level of any game ever.
I'm all for shmup appreciation, and due to the prevalence of XBLA and PSN I'd wager to say these are great times to be a shmup fan because of the revival of the twin-stick shooter in mainstream acceptance. And any fan of the genre with a 360 owes it to themselves to buy Pac-Man CE; it's not a shmup but it shares a lot of the same sensibilities.

I've been playing a lot of Touhou10: Mountain of Faith. I can't get over that dying once eats into a third of your bonus, it's very heartbreaking.
Did Zun ever release a patch fixing MarisaB? Or rebalancing the spellcards? I easily blitzed through it on Normal within a couple days of release and then after getting 2/3rds of the way through Extra on my third or fourth try, just sort of stopped caring.
I'm still pissed that he didn't use Wind Girl God for Aya's theme. Stage 4 is so awesome otherwise. Most of the rest came off as pretty uninspired compared to IN though.

This is pretty neat. It's a shame the genre isn't more popular, despite the fact that the enemies from Space Invaders and the ship from Gradius are nearly as iconic as Mario and Link. I probably won't enter the contest, though - I've got plenty to do this month without adding an art project on top of it. I will celebrate by buying Everday Shooter on the PSN, though (as I originally planned to).
If anyone else wants to drop a quick buck on a downloadable SHMUP, I would recommend:
-Super Stardust HD (PSN)
-Everyday Shooter (PSN) (Although I haven't played it yet, it received very positive critical reception)
-Geometry Wars (Live, Steam)
-Triggerheart Exelica (Live)
-Soldier Blade (VC)
-Galaga '90 (VC)
-Lords of Thunder (VC)
And be on the lookout for Ikaruga and Star Soldier R, on Xbox Live and WiiWare respectively, later this year.
I think I'll actually get around to beating REZ HD..... if that counts as a shmup.

I'll try... I just bought a 5.1 receiver but have pretty much run out of room on my entertainment center to put it in. I *do* want to see what all the huhbub is about.

I hate the fact that I can't call these games shooters anymore. FPS can DIAF.
You have a TF2 sig....
You caught me! :P It's the first FPS I've played since Shadow Warrior though. And really, I don't have a problem with the genre, just the usurping of the name.
Gradius Collection is the reason that I bought a PSP. In fact, I got the game before I got the system itself. The existence of the PSP would be justified if Gradius Collection had been the only game ever released for it.
Great idea for a theme month, I say. Of course, I'm a big shmup fan, even though I'm not particularly good at them.
I will say that I can't believe that it's been over 10 years and Radiant Silvergun still isn't readily available to play on a major console. Wtf?
Just waiting for R-type Final to arrive. Otherwise I've been playing the usual Touhou, Cha Ren Sha, Blue Wish Resurrection, Platine Dispositif shmups and a bunch of others.
Most recently I've been in love with Hellsinker. It's such a well done game. Can't believe it's doujin, it feels so professional.
I pretty much play a shmup once a day but I should dedicate more time into it. Lunatic/Hell/Demonic 1cc runs are still beyond me.
Did Zun ever release a patch fixing MarisaB? Or rebalancing the spellcards? I easily blitzed through it on Normal within a couple days of release and then after getting 2/3rds of the way through Extra on my third or fourth try, just sort of stopped caring.
MarisaB just wrecks all the bosses. Almost 1cc'ed hard on the first go. Definitely feels a little lacking compared to the previous entries.
As much as I prefer the straight up illusion lasers to homing amulets, it was just too ridiculous. I actually didn't find out about it until I read a Touhou doujin where they told readers to try it out.
I wish Cave's shmups were more easily accessible to a foreign audience. I want to try out their stuff but a good sum of it is arcade only.
I picked up the demo for both, but liked Triggerheart.... there something I'm missing and would TH end up being a bad purchase?

i think i'll fire up Shikigami 3 and shoot some things
3? Imported?
Envy. :x
It's not too far off now for NA. Wii version at least, April 22 appearently. You could always get the PC version of 3 though yes you would have to import that.

It's a conspiracy.
Huh. Took me a second there. Well no problems here, FES overrides anything else. I'm not that big on the Shikigami games.

in standard horizontal form it isn't as good as it should be. But move it over to vertical -90 Or +90 and it really shines. Bullet hell? ya, it is supposed to be brutal and getting a perfect in that game is what gamer points should really be about. Some games just hand it out for doing mediocre. I digress.
Triggerheart is a fun shmup. If you like that kind of thing.

I've been meaning to pick up Gradius V, but I'd have to find one first.
As for favorites: Life Force Salamander and Parodius. Way too much fun when I was little.
With the release of Triggerheart, it seems like it's pretty well timed.
Gradius V is amazing and is probably the finest example of classic shmup gameplay. Also co-op is a blast.
I still hold out hope that one day some publisher will take it upon themselves to release some of Cave's shooters here. I can dream.

gotta play through some R-Type and Gradius in celebration.

In what regard?
I picked up the demo for both, but liked Triggerheart.... there something I'm missing and would TH end up being a bad purchase?
So I'm gonna go shoot some ants.
It's alright, it's just seems a bit heartless. And the hi-score table is fucked. Top 100 only.
It has a lot of bullet hell, and little character. The controls don't seem tight enough for the accuracy you need.
Omega 5 is more polished, refined, entertaining, and has a more interesting point scoring system. To me at least.
I'm not saying it's bad. And I'm totally glad it's out. But Omega 5 is leagues ahead for whats on live.

Awesome shmups, and they're free! He's even got an XNA game now.
i think i'll fire up Shikigami 3 and shoot some things
I think I'll wait on the whole "shmuppreciation" thing until Ikaruga hits on XBLA.
That reminds me I need to work on rRootage. The 7-8 stage marks are where I hit a wall.

Or perhaps finally get around to finishing Panzer Dragoon Orta. That counts, right?
It's a conspiracy.
And Orta absolutely counts. Awesome game.
