Hi everyone,

So here is the story, I have an XBOX 360 and I love it. It has been an awesome console, but lately I have been coveting a PS3. I don't know what it is, but I seem drawn to it.
I saw an 80GB at Costco, with Uncharted and an extra controller for $499 and am really tempted. And this is from someone who has had an N64 instead of PS1, Xbox instead of PS2 and was totally shunning the old SKU's of the PS3 for lack of content, and affordability. Now with the prices slashed, and Blu-Ray as winner of the format wars, I find myself in a strange land.
I am not at all interested in playing MGS4 or FFXIII, and although Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank seem to be up my alley, I feel I want the 80GB more for the High Def capability, PS2 BC and some of the simple things like Internet browser, and wireless network. I definitely prefer the 360 controller, (I actually can't stand the shape of a Dualshock) and I think I could put this all behind me if Microsoft would make a Blu-Ray add on (Elite blackey-grey preferred haha).

I know I'm really just venting, but If anyone has any advise, let me hear it.
Or as a alternative to stupid fan-boy warring, tell me what features you like the best from the consoles you don't have.

No one here can tell you what to buy. If you want the PS3 and can afford it... then buy it. If not, then don't.

I can tell you what to buy, ummm errr...go for it! I don't personally own one though I might at some point, I wish i was feeling that lull you are. I want to play mah final fantasies and my solid metal gears, but I just can't warrant 500 dollars for a few games

I've been a sony fan-boy since the PS1 so take that into account with my opinion.

The greatest console ever made is the Super Nintendo. The second greatest that I've ever played (nes, snes, ps1, ps2, ps3, xbox, xbox360) is tied between the NES and the ps3.

I loved my ps2 and had probably 40 games. I was thinking I was going to regret buying my ps3 (I didn't even have an hdtv). I now play on a 22" hd computer monitor every day and I have beaten EVERY single game I've gotten. And every single one of them has been fantastic.

    ratchet and clank
    resistance: fall of man
    cod4
    assassins creed
    dmc4
    motorstorm
    ncaa 2k8

and i just bought mlb 08 the show.

1.) I see the reviews comparing the x360 versions to ps3 versions and I have no idea what they messed up in their 360. I've never once seen any issue like they've described in any article, even on my crappy monitor. The games look fantastic, as good or better than the 360's I've played.

2.) blu-ray is beautiful. just beautiful. I only own two right now, but I've rented a few. I'm never buying a regular dvd again.

3.) Online is great. The PSN isn't quite as good as xbox live, but guess what: its FREE. Oh, and its getting better! Good demos, cheap downloads, easy multiplayer.

4.) Better games than people give it credit for. Especially up your alley. There are no games like ratchet and clank on x360 or pc. Its a virtually perfect game. Uncharted, heavenly sword, the new god of war. All action platformers.

Anyway, I am sorry for going on so long - it just frustrates me when people spout off about why the ps3 sucks or whatnot.

tl;dr: If you can afford it, get it - you'll love it.

See, I'd have to say that out of every game you just listed, only AC and Cod4 are even rental-worthy in my eyes. I was especially disappointed by Resistance... it felt like Halo, except the aliens didn't act like cutesy little retards.

Regardless, I'd agree that OP should go for it. If you can afford it and you want one, pick it up. Not my cup of tea, but I know a guy who seems to enjoy his quite a bit.

Seems to me the best idea would be to look at the games available for the PS3, determine whether you're interested in them, and pick up a PS3 assuming it's within your price range. Buying one for games that are not out yet may be a bit foolish - you never know when price drops might hit, etc.

I've never really wanted to have a console just to own one, so maybe this doesn't apply to you.

Just speaking from the high-def capability, I have read that of all of the current-gen BluRay players, the PS3 is the only one that is guaranteed to be forward compatible with the newer BluRay 2.0 format specification. This spec includes a lot of the features HD-DVD had, and some of them are pretty nifty (like the PiP stuff). The point only being that if you want a BluRay player anyways, and since HD-DVD is dead it makes sense to go BluRay (I have HD-DVD for my 360 and love it, but it's still not smart unless you only want current titles), the PS3 is going to be your best bet.

I have a 360 and Wii, and don't really need a PS3, but I still want one eventually as well. I'm not trying to sell you on it, simply give you some information that might help you one way or the other. You can always wait, though. I'm thinking I'll wait until we see some sort of PS3/DualShock3 package, as long as it includes BC.

I've had a 360 (three if you include warrenty returns) since launch and it's seen alot of play time. The 360 is a great system.

With that said, in June of last year I got the "I want a PS3 bug".

I think it was Warhawk and Eye of Judgement that really got me salivating for the system. Price was the major factor that held me back.

In November the system dropped to a realistic $399 Canadian (it was $679 before that). This was the point where I bit. I was worried that I wouldn't use the system as much as my 360 but the reverse has been true.

Warhawk is every bit as good as I thought it would be, quickly becoming my most played game this gen, even surpassing my beloved CoD4.

I love having the web browser handy, and there are some really kickass downloadable titles like Everyday Shooter, Pixeljunk Monsters, and Super Stardust HD.

The coming year looks even brighter for the PS3. The PSN Store is getting an overhaul on April 15th (confirmed), Home is just around the corner, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid, MMO's like the Agency and much more.

Let's not forget Blu-ray. With HD DVD having lost the war, the PS3 is a good investment if you have any interest at all in Hi def media ... having owned both the 360 HD DVD Add on and a PS3, I can tell you that the PS3 is a far far better Blu-ray player than the 360 Add On was an HD DVD Player.

In the end it comes down to what you want. The 360 certainly has more than enough games out now and coming down the road to keep even the most hardcore gamer busy ... but with that said, the PS3 has finally come into it's own.

Having both consoles for me, I've now got the best of both worlds and I couldn't be any happier.

As long as you don't plan on trading the 360 in for the PS3 there isn't much of a reason NOT to pick up a PS3, short of a lack of games you are interested in. If you can afford it, go for it. If its going to stretch your budget just wait until an exclusive game or blu ray movie comes out that you just must have. I doubt we'll see another price drop before the new Xmas shopping season so, yeah, go for it.

I don't think anyone on the boards is going to tell you that buying a PS3 right now is a bad idea...as long as you aren't trading in another current gen system to pick it up.

Wait for the MGS4 bundle if you absolutely must have a PS3. Comes with the DualShock3 controllers. The ones that have rumble, aren't boomerangs and don't suck. Definitely worth it, even if you don't care about MGS4. Every game you want now would be in the budget bins by then most likely, too.

Yeah that MGS4 bundle is looking mighty tempting.

Kinda makes me wish I had actually played some of the MGS series though. I can't follow the story for the game at all.

buy a PS2 for $100 and buy the games now, play them, then boom, you'll be set for the MGS4 release.

I think I'll be picking up the MGS4 bundle too - 500 bucks for a Blu-Ray player, backwards compatibility, a 70(?) dollar game, and a 40 (?) dollar controller sounds like a ridiculously good deal. I don't know if these things are going to fly of the shelves because of that, but it's really hard to argue with that kind of bundle since it seems like you'd pay more for all of the 40G plus controller and MGS4.

The MSG4 bundle might be right up your alley OP. 80 gb (BC), Dualshock 3 controller and one of the biggest games of the year packed in. Just make sure you pick up Uncharted and Warhawk along with it... we're always looking for new pilots in the clan. :)
