What PSP game to get.... with a twist!

Allright, so here's the story and twist.

I'm going on a long bus ride for a tour with a group I play for starting Friday.

Today I'm going down to best buy to get ready for the day with some PSP games(I don't have a DS). I'm getting Patapon and God of War, but since it's going to be really, really fucking long, I'm thinking I'm going to pick up something else.

However, since I'm already spending $60 on games for a 10-day streak, and I'm picking up Brawl when I get back, and Crisis Core is coming out at the end of the month, I'm really not looking to spend any more than $20 on this other game.

Games I already have:

MGS : PO
Killzone: Liberation
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow
Daxter
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
Beats
Lumines

In general I'm a huge fan of any game with a working cover system, I love me some tactical shooters. Also I'm a fan of the vertical shumps, but I'm not sure how many of those there are on the PSP(Or I'd probably already have them). In general, though, other than strategy games or driving games, I'm up for almost anything. I'm also looking for as long of an experience as I can get, so a really, really, really polished 6-hour game isn't really going to do it for me, unless it has super awesome replayability.

So, summarized, I'm looking for:

Cheap
Long
Not driving/strategy. Preferably Tactical shooter(1st or 3rd) or Shump.

So. Any suggestions?

And when we find this we can have a good budget games thing, since budget games can be awesome.

Aren't there a few SOCOM games for the PSP?

What about Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror?

I would reccomend the Gradius Collection (since it's an insane value), but I can't imagine that you can actually find it anywhere anymore.

It doesn't really meet your criteria, but you should get Dracula X Collection.

Is Dark Mirror sufficiently not Logan's Shadow to be fun if I've played through LS a few times?

Also SOCOM..... There are two with 80+ ratings... ooh.

Oh and yeah, I'm still looking to pick up the Castlevania games and FFT sometime, but since I'm spending a bajillion dollars this month already that's off the table for a while. One of these days...

And yeah, unfortunately the other thing is that I need to be able to find the games at Best Buy, Wal-mart, or Circuit City.

Possibly Gamestop but the one around where I'm going has a terrible library, it's a really small one.

An interesting puzzle to solve ... do you like PS1-era JRPGs? On the Playstation PC Store you can buy the original Wild Arms for $5.99, which will last you at least 20+ hours, though it's decidedly old-school in both presentation and pacing; you may cut yourself on the battle-graphic jaggies, but the spritework still holds up.

Also, if you're into strategy RPGs I think Jeanne D'Arc is going used for about $25-ish. It's not as complex or multilayered as something like FFT but I liked it enough for the first 6-8 hours, though it's on my backlog now.

I'm a fan of RPGs, but recently I've been more into action-oriented games unless the RPG is something stellar.

For strategy RPGs.... I've not yet found one that really gets me in for a good period of time.

It's weird, I used to be way into RPGs but recently I've been really getting into the faster skill-based games than too much number crunching.

How do you feel about fighting games? Tekken 5 is a $20 greatest hits title. I know that I can get just about infinite replayability out of a good fighter, but your mileage may vary.

If you can find it, Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts should only run you about $15. Not that long, but tough as nails.

If you're really looking for something to sink a lot of time into, however, why don't you just change around your strategy a little and get either FFT, Disgaea, or Jean D'arc instead of God of War? Or get one of those games, God of War, and nothing else? I haven't played Patapon yet, but it doesn't sound like it's that long of an experience.

*Never mind, just saw your above post. You might want to see if your local Gamestop has a used copy of Gradius Collection. If they do, I think it's only like $12 or something.

    I'll look at Tekken too.

Damn so far all this has done is made me go from "Well I'm not really sure" to "Fuck there are like 80 of them that I want to get now"

    Excellent suggestions though.

And yeah, God of War.... I really love action games. Love them so much. So very much. I need my GoW fix. Slash slash! Pew Pew magic! Slash! Cut! Grab!

I was pretty much in the same boat you were in about two weeks ago.

My solution was home brew though. I'm not sure if that's an option for you but it's free and its length is only limited by your memory stick. I ripped and played a copy of Parasite Eve for my trip.

When you get some more money you might want to consider buying an extended battery. One of those babies lasted me the entire 7 hour trip and still had plenty of juice left.

This is also a good suggestion. I think VCS is by far the best retail game for the PSP yet. The sandbox gameplay works so well for a portable.

Again, if you like the God of War gameplay, you'll like Monster Hunter most likely. Lots of slashy slashy.

I played GTA VC proper for a bit recently, and I basically just started getting in a cycle of going in, driving around, realizing that there I was pretty much just driving around, maybe doing a mission and then quitting. It held my attention for a while, but I don't know, I couldn't quite get into it so much.

The battery thing was brought up already, but to reiterate, if you're going on a long bus trip, you might just want to pick up an extra battery.

God of War is awesome, but all of the reviews have said it's between five and a half and six hours long, so it might not be the best option for a super long trip.

Also, the GTA games stream data from the UMD much moreso than any other PSP games, so the battery life drops a bit when you play them.

Have you thought about picking up the Sega Genesis Collection? It hit at $30, but should be down to $20 nowadays. It has a ton of games: platformers, fighting games, and RPGs being the bulk of them. It's an incredible buy if you're a Sega fan, and for the most part the rom loads once and that's it, so the UMD access is low, which means your battery holds out longer.

It's a shame you don't have a modded PSP, there is some awesome homebrew stuff available that could keep you occupied for quite a while. SCUMMVM, DosBox, and Cave Story being three really good examples.

I picked up Vice City Stories on a whim, even though I'm really not a fan of the main series, and VCS did nothing to change my mind, so its kind of a game that preaches to the choir. If you enjoy the dicking around aspects of GTA then it's right up your alley, though.

And God of War and Monster Hunter are really two very different approaches to action; I found MHP far too limiting and rigid in terms of its fighting mechanics, and you have to be really precise and plan ahead to fight well. In God of War it's much faster and looser, which I prefer.

Castlevania X was $20 at amazon for a while (wasn't even deal of the day or anything) but you missed your chance and its back to $30. (So far my favorite psp game, but I don't have many)

I'm looking for a RPG for my psp. Should I get
Disagea Afternoon of Darkness (I heard its for completionists, which I am not)
Jeanne D' Arc (Have only heard good things about)
Wait for Crisis Core (I really liked FFVII, but its $40)

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

I wish I had a modded PSP too, but the whole getting homebrew running thing.... I'm not too sure about all that yet, and I haven't found a good guide that covers everything that works with 3.90 that doesn't involve cutting up a battery or needing to get a pandora battery/magic memory stick or whatever.

It's all too confusing until I have the time to actually figure it out.

Anyways... lunch time, class, then time to spend a few more hours agonizing at the store.

As much as I love Gitaroo Man (and I do), it's not a very long game. It's not even an average-length game. It's got 10 songs, I think? 40 minutes in one go if you're lucky. So not so much for the OP's predicament but it does makes sense as a "budget PSP games" recommendation, which I wholeheartedly endorse. I'm pretty sure it's $20 new at GameStop, although I swear I've seen it at other GameStops still at $40.

EDIT: MODDING YOUR PSP IS WRONG AND KILLS PUPPIES

Anyway. I was reasonably impressed with the fancy-shmancy PSP Armored Core we got here in the states. Dunno how available it is, and apparently there is a version in which you cannot directly control you AC (which is weird). AC is a nice timesink because you can just sit there and tweak your mech for a good quarter century - but you have to like that type of game. Not exactly the most forgiving control scheme I've ever seen either. Only got a chance to play it, don't own it yet.

EDIT: the American version allows you to pilot your mech and it's called Armored Core Formula Force: Extreme Battle Edition. horrible.

Really? I was under the impression even if it was legit backups of stuff you own on retail discs, it was still verboten, and "homebrew," as in software made for free, is kosher, but "homebrew" in the "I'm using the general term to talk about ROMs" sense wasn't. I had PMed a mod about it when I was debating going with a custom firmware last year and was told not to make a thread, although now that I think about it I was looking to make a thread more about the "how-to" of it all.

You need a pandora battery to install CFW. A battery can be "pandora-ized" through softmod (access to the PSP running CFW) or hardmod, which involves cutting the 4th pin after opening the battery. Softmod can be performed and undone through software. Hardmod can be undone with solder if you are comfortable doing so.

Creating the Magic Memory Stick to work with the Pandora battery is incredibly easy now since there are about 4 reliable tools that can do this for you.

yeah I kind of after-the-fact realized that this was a grey area. I've spent a lot of time on a PSP homebrew forum lately and just sort of forgot that the mods around here like to keep things on the safe side (and for totally legit reasons too). I'm pretty sure that you are correct in thinking that talking about homebrew is against the rules, and I'll shut my yap until we get official confirmation otherwise.
