I finished the plant chapter earlier today - it's been years and years since I played through MGS2, and at the time I only had the most rudimentary understanding of the plot. Now I'm a little older and able to soak it all in a little better.

Yes, the plot is totally tripping balls.

    When you're getting...
tortured, and Solidus says "he's my son", before explaining that he doesn't mean it in a literal sense, I totally had a moment where I was like "Oh my God! If Solidus is a clone of Big Boss and Raiden is his son, that means Raiden is actually part of the Solid Snake bloodline! That totally makes him less of a pussy and... oh... he was being figurative. Shit."

I saw a review of this collection the other day and thought "Damn, I still need to play MGS3." The thing is that I already own the original and MGS2, so I opted to seek out MGS3 on its own. Also, I wanted that second disk with the original two Metal Gear games on it. I was able to get it off ebay for about $25.

As someone who was disappointed with MGS2, I look forward to this one. I should probably go back and play MGS2 and see what I think of it nowadays.

(Also, I've only read the first and last pages of this thread.)

I bought MGS 3 last year for 10 bucks at best buy. Its a damn fine game, and I was put off by the nonsense in MGS 2, but played it anyway due to all the hidden stuff you can find, and generally fun gameplay.

3 is definitely the greatest Metal Gear game.

You only THINK MGS3 has the worst story... until you get to the end.

In that way, it's the exact mirror opposite of MGS2.

The sequence of Metal Gear releases goes like this:

Metal Gear (NES), Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (NES), Metal Gear Solid (PSX), Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2) and Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2).

In terms of storyline, it's pretty much the same except MGS3 is the 'first' in the canon:
    STORY:
    MGS3 -> MG -> MG2 -> MGS -> MGS2 -> MGS4

If you never played the original Metal Gear games (which were, I gotta' say, incredible at the time) they were basically a top-down stealth-actioner. You guided Snake around the jungle and into the enemy compound, generally trying to stay hidden. I usually just snuck up behind guys and gave 'em a one-two-three punch to the neck to kill 'em.

Just like the Solid titles, you found all your gear on-site, eventually building up an impressive arsenal. There were cool boss fights, and eventually you save the world.

Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 are the most-loyal to gameplay elements of the original two, with the Nikita Missile, area-specific boxes to hide in (getting in a box in a truck would allow you to be driven around the map by enemy drivers), untouchable floors that must be negotiated by using the Nikita, and the necessity to wall-hug to sneak underneath security cameras.

Frankly, I don't mind that MGS3 doesn't have the Nikita, 'cause it is the best game in the series in terms of gameplay, graphics, story and certainly boss fights.

    I like MGS2.

    I like MGS3.

Ohhhh that's to do with a mask... To be honest the intricacies escape me at the moment, so let's check the FAQs...

"This is my first MGS game"
    "I like MGS1"
    "I like MGS2"
Selecting this is my first MGS game has the regular opening. Selecting I like MGS1 makes your stamina drop slower. Selecting I like MGS2 gets you a special intro.

...but I'm not positive so I'm checkin' this out right now...

Edit: Yeah selecting MGS3 seems normal with no surprises, so I hafta' figure "this is my first" is the same. Selecting MGS2 gets you the mask (what happens for that scene later on if you don't have the mask, I wonder?), and I must admit I've never noticed my stamina dropping any slower, but maybe that's cause I always went for the mask.

Well, it's a prequel. If Naked Snake dies in the jungle, it'll fuck up the later games in the series, hence the whole "time paradox" or whatever.

(also if you take the fake death pill you have until it says "time paradox" to take the wakeup pill)

One big thing about MGS games: You will get cool items, such as the Fake-Death pill in short supply, but that shouldn't make you not use them at all! Don't forget they are there, and there is no point to hording them, or else, like myself in MGS3, you'll end up with a bunch of cool things that you never used!

Man this is such a catch-22 because I either acknowledge that MGS2 is incoherent nonsense or tell you that you're just not thinking about it enough and sound like the biggest cock in the world.

Seriously there has to be a way to defend MGS2's story without sounding like a pretentious dick.

The great thing about Duel mode is that it forces you to use weapons like the handkerchief that you might have avoided during the normal game. I don't think it's actually possible to beat Volgin or The Boss in Special Duel without making extensive use of the handkerchief or the knockout gas cigar.

Well if we're just talking straight-up about the plot, I'm not sure you can really say it's any worse than the first MGS.

But at least MGS2 tried to do something special and meaningful with all it's wacky contrived bullshit.

Also I'm not entirely sure why but throughout that entire game I could not shake the feeling that the interior of the Big Shell should be almost exclusively white and light grey, like how Shadow Moses was mostly black and dark grey.
