    Don't forget the new camera that really makes it a much more playable game.

    Oh come now its just opinions but this thing he does here:

    Made me say "fuck off" the first time, and then they have him do it A MILLION MORE TIMES in the game at which point I wanted to stab someone in the face for being so horrible. Nobody, even a fictional character, could do that move and still have self respect. If I tried to do it my hands would take over my motor control system and strangle me for being lame.

    You have an issue with his hand gestures.

    I'm getting seriously pumped for MGS4, but I've never played Metal Gear Solid 3. Has Subsistence aged well? I find that I have a hard time stomaching a lot of old PS2 graphics on my HD set. Also I'm not too keen on buying this whole set when I only want to play one game, but the price on Subsistence alone isn't that much less than the set.

    P.S. I do have have a 60Giger so I can use the ps3 to do smoothing and upscaling.

    I haven't played it on an HDTV yet, but I had only played it for the first time last month and it was incredible.

    XBOX version of 2 is the worst version released.

    Still perfectly playable though.

    Count me in on the Twin Snakes preferal, but I am going to pick this up because I gave away my copy of 2 when I got Substance (then sold it late last year for a song) and 3 (was going to pick up Subsistance but never got around to it.)

    Also I don't think I ever bought MGS, just mooched it off of friends or rented it. So it's three games I don't own at a bargin price.

    What's wrong with Substance for XBOX? I've only played it for PS2.

    Also, how hard is it to find a decent pair of component cables for the PS2? I've been thinking of buying a PS2 but I want it to look relatively decent on my HDTV. Also, are there any major differences between the original and slim PS2 that would sway my hand to buy a specific model?

    I've never had a PS2 so...

    Devil May Cry 1 and 3 but not 2
    Shadow of the Colossus is a shining, shimmering star of awesomesauce and win.
    Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is the best superhero game ever made, bar none.
    Okami is a massively original, beautiful, wonderful adventure game.
    Ratchet & Clank Going Commando (2) is the best one, but they're all pretty great (but not Size Matters)
    Hitman: Blood Money is the pinnacle of the Hitman series and a truly excellent game.
    Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the game I dreamed about playing when I was a kid, with added adult content.
    Prince of Persia series has the best platforming out there.
    Tenchu Fatal Shadows is slightly better than Wrath of Heaven, and is the best ninja game out there.
    Odin Sphere is a truly unique side-scrolling 2D rpg brawler with the most gorgeous sprites ever seen.
    Fatal Frame 2 is the scariest motherfucking game ever. Oh, and
    The Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection contains three of the best games of the last two generations of systems.

    Good list, but to add to it...
    Shin Megami Tensei is arguably the best RPG series out there, as long as random battles don't scare you
    Ico is the companion to Shadow of the Colossus, and while less epic has rather a lot going for it
    God Hand is the best action game ever made, provided you can cope with the difficulty
    Silent Hill 2 is the other scariest game ever

    Known issues with XBOX MGS2:

    Framerate issues.

    Terrible controls.

    Audio glitches.

    Also I believe its either not 360 compatible or that the compatibility is so bad as to not be worth it.

    Still playable though, and cheap as shit.

    I can't disagree with any of your suggestions, but I tried to leave off ones that either would be impossible to find in-stores (I want Nocturne, I don't want to pay a hundred dollars online for it), or something rather polarizing like God Hand.

    Is God Hand awesome? Totally. Are there a bunch of people who just won't get it? Absolutely. Though I suppose you could say the same thing about a third of the games on my list. (DMC3, Tenchu, Odin Sphere.)

    But yeah, God Hand is awesome (20 bucks at Best Buy), Ico is great in a much subtler way that SotC (good luck finding it), and most people who would suggest the Shin Megami Tensei series isn't full of win haven't played 'em (Disclaimer: I've only played P3 - it was great.)

    Which reminds me, in terms of RPGs we might as well add
    Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3: FES is the original P3 with additional content and a new post-game chapter - coming out on the 22nd of this month for a measley 30 bucks.
    Final Fantasy XII - the first Final Fantasy I've played since FFXI Online and FF3 for my brother's DS, I find I'm really enjoying it. The boss fights can be brutal, but I love the exploration and the characters. I only put it down to play through MGS2 a few times and get my Infinite Ammo and Stealth unlocked.

    There's lots of awesome content on the PS2 that's being re-released in bundles (aside from Metal Gear Solid. Just lookin' at my own collection I've got...

    281744a.jpg the Hitman Trilogy.
    281645a.jpg Devil May Cry Anniversary Collection.
    281666a.jpg the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy
    And of course MGS. But they've got tons of value packs out these days.

    I've seen a Need for Speed three-pack at the local EB, plus a Resident Evil pack (I've already got RE4 - don't need another). In Europe I know there's a Prince of Persia Trilogy pack (I find myself jealous of a UK release, what're the odds?) And I'm pretty sure there's a PS2 Silent Hill trilogy pack as well. Lots and lots of value for your gaming dollar on the PS2 these days - and they're all $30!

    edit: I wrote 'got hand' instead of god hand. Got hand? Then you've got 'milk' shortly too. Gross.

    Edit: Er, nm. I think the Xbox did have pressure sensitive buttons.

    Now, on the PC version, I was able to trick the game into behaving like it does on the PS2 with pressure sensitive buttons. I doubt anyone cares anymore, as the game was released at least 100 years ago... but if you do own Substance on the PC (HIGH RES!), here's what you can do:

    Use a DualShock2 or generic PS2 controller with analog face buttons, and a Super Dual Box Pro (I'm not sure if there are any other PS2 to USB adapters that support analog buttons)

    OR

    I haven't done this, but I think you could use any console controller+adapter or PC controller with an analog trigger to accomplish the same thing. You'd just need to change the axis in the AHK script (use the JoystickTest.ahk script you can find with a simple Google search).

    AND

    Download and install AutoHotKey and paste the following into a txt file:
    #Persistent ; Keep this script running until the user explicitly exits it.
    #NoEnv ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases.
    SendMode Input ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability.
    SetTimer, WatchAxis, 5
    return

    WatchAxis:
    GetKeyState, JoyU, JoyU ; Get position of U axis.
    Key1ToHoldDownPrev = %Key1ToHoldDown%
    Key2ToHoldDownPrev = %Key2ToHoldDown%

    if JoyU = 0
    {
    Key1ToHoldDown =
    Key2ToHoldDown =
    }
    else if JoyU between 1 and 10
    {
    Key1ToHoldDown = z
    Key2ToHoldDown =
    }
    else if JoyU between 11 and 75
    {
    Key1ToHoldDown = z
    Key2ToHoldDown = s
    }
    else if JoyU between 76 and 100
    {
    Key1ToHoldDown =
    Key2ToHoldDown = s
    }

    SetKeyDelay -1 ; Avoid delays between keystrokes.

    if Key1ToHoldDown <> %Key1ToHoldDownPrev%  ; Key #1 needs adjusting.
    {
       if Key1ToHoldDownPrev <> ; There is a previous key to release.
          Send, {%Key1ToHoldDownPrev% up}  ; Release it.
       if Key1ToHoldDown <> ; There is a key to press down.
          Send, {%Key1ToHoldDown% down}  ; Press it down.
    }
    if Key2ToHoldDown <> %Key2ToHoldDownPrev%  ; Key #2 needs adjusting.
    {
       if Key2ToHoldDownPrev <> ; There is a previous key to release.
          Send, {%Key2ToHoldDownPrev% up}  ; Release it.
       if Key2ToHoldDown <> ; There is a key to press down.
          Send, {%Key2ToHoldDown% down}  ; Press it down.
    }
    return

    Rename it whateveryouwant.ahk.

    Then in the MGS2 controller config, set WEAK and SLOW both to Z, and WEAPON to S. Unbind any gamepad buttons you might have set for those, and also make sure Z and S aren't bound to any other actions.

    If you use the Super Dual Box Pro, make sure you have pressure buttons enabled and set to the appropriate button (whichever you choose, set the same button to both of the options and it should be JoyU).

    I think the numbers could be tweaked a little, but it functions pretty much just as it should. Releasing the button slowly will not fire a pistol, but letting go of it quickly will. And assault rifles will only fire if you push the button down all the way.

    Well, with the exception of 3, Metal Gear Solid has always been about dudes (and a rare dudette or two) in leotard-like apparel, usually with several instances of 'squeezing into the tight spaces' of air ducts. Indeed, Naked Snake and Solid both end up shirtless more than once, and let us not forget the post-torture sequence in Sons of Liberty. MGS has always had some substantial homo-erotic tones (not that there's anything wrong with that).

    Many example of the action genre are very homoerotic. The most obvious recent movie would be, naturally, 300. In one of the opening scenes, Leonidas makes a joke in front of the Persian emissary about the 'boy lovers' of Athens, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he and his men look like coverboys in a fetish magazine.

    I remember the first time I saw Ultimate Fighting in a bar. I was there with my friends, and he said 'oh dude, you've gotta' watch this!', and he sat enthralled for like twenty goddamn minutes as these two muscled, sweaty men hugged each other on the floor. They didn't get off the floor, they just kept trying to hug each other in different ways for about a half an hour. I don't know where that friend is these days, but I'll bet he takes in a lot of musical theatre (not that there's anything wrong with that).

    So yeah, there's a lot of gayness in MGS. But it's generally the awesome action-y gayness that straight men can wholeheartedly embrace, 'cause on first glance it goes right over our heads and we're just so pleased with all the shooting and explosions and bipedal nuclear battle tanks.

    No I'm pretty sure it's just a rare moment of immaturity on my part.
