Damnation: Steampunk meets Alternate History shooter
Codemasters have announced development of Damnation, a Steampunk-themed shooter set during an alternate-history version of the US Civil War. Currently in development at Blue Omega (who came second with the project in 2005's Unreal Mod tourney), the game will feature a "post-industrial conflict between humanity and an unstoppable arms dealer", and is described as a "shooter gone vertical" (screens show a lot of urban fighting between tall buildings). It's due on 360, PS3 and PC at the end of the year.
The only other alternate history game I'm familiar with is Fall of Liberty: Turning Point, and from what I've heard and played of the demo, it's a piece of shit. Let's hope this one is leagues better.
I'm a sucker for alternate history (and steampunk, for that matter), but it seems like more than a bit of stretch to slap the Civil War on top of the setting they've got going, especially since the alleged story has absolutely nothing to do with it. As far as I can tell, it only really accounts for that guy's hat.
That rope sliding business is reminiscent of an early Team Fortress 2 promo shot from way back. If you can ninja your way between buildings on grappling-hook equipped ropes I'm in.
Man, don't they make any shooters I won't be embarrassed to play with a woman in the house?
No, but you should buy this because you can see part of her boobs and maybe, just maybe, they'll pop out over the course of the game and wouldn't that be awesome?

Dude, you know it. High five!
Those screens looks really more futuristic than steampunk, though. Like Guns of the South gone horribly wrong.

Maybe something huge will change, like pretty much everything shown in the screens, to make it an actual steam punk game. You need to have steam and smoke and smog and that sort of stuff. The gasoline-powered internal combustion engine never happened, so presumably, you should not be running around in a pair of PVC pants. I think the farthest you can take the steampunk setting is right around World War I, and that is really pushing it.

I was excited, then shocked, then sad, then angry, then sad, and now I'm sitting very still.
I can only hope that this game sells like crazy, and a developer who isn't paying much attention manages to create an actual steampunk game while trying to jump on the bandwagon.
It's like they went "hey, that steampunk thing is gaining interest! We'll call our new game that!" before realizing that it was really just another crappy sci-fi shooter. The answer, then, was clearly to give everyone hats and tack on something about the "Civil War."
Theres no way you can tell what period thats supposed to be. For me thats a pretty big tenant of steampunk. Feel free to do crazy tech, as long as I can glance at it and go "Yeah that Victorian" or whatever,
I'm sick of steampunk anyway. What about the cyberpunk?
I mean, yeah it's no longer a relevant vision of our future, but did we seriously think everybody was gonna dress like that in 2010 anyway?
Bring back Braderunner and Dark Knight Returns.
I'm not really tired of steampunk, but I would love to see a return to that awesome, 80's style cyberpunk. The stuff that William Gibson was writing about.
I recently got through watching Armitage III and it gave me such a pang of nostalgia for more stuff like that. Crazy punk rocker hairstyles, androids, towering corporate architecture, outright corporate violence in the streets, running the net, unnecessary neon lighting. That stuff was freaking awesome.
Or heck, just remake Syndicate. PLEASE just give me a good new Syndicate and I'll be a happy bunny.
How can you be tired of Steampunk when there are only like 5 games that can be classified as such. I don't ever want to live in a world where Steampunk is a negative. Or cyberpunk for that matter.
This thing looks dumb, though.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.

Or lack there of. One third (forth?) of a shirt and a classy tramp stamp to complete the ensemble.
also none of those screens seem to suggest the Civil War at all.
Steampunk for me is like olde England with gears and smoke stacks and sepia toned everything.

That's quite the steampunk-esque civil war lady's outfit. Haven't you read up on your history?
To the OP, you have disappointed me. That is not Steampunk. It has neither steam, nor punk. At least, no punk beyond a tramp stamp.
Is that a term? No, probably not.
Unfortunately it is.
But jesus... wouldja look at that underboob? It's like they are trying to market it to younger males or something.
I was thinking the same thing. Isn't steampunk supposed to be, you know, not modern?
I see none of these.
Still I like some of the architecture.
I think they're trying for a whole new market... s&mpunk

Poor, poor, steampunk. Always so abused.

That single screenshot looks more like Splinter Cell to me. Where's my steam-powered monocles?
UK steam engineers, artificers and roustabouts have been hard at work cracking the Lense / Steam ratio equations.
We may be onto something.
Dude they come in pairs now? Spectacles.
Aye, a good pair of monocles is a spectacle t'see. 'Specially when they're both over tha same eye.
they should hire a better art director
WOOOOOO, DEADLANDS GAME.
