I was just curious if anyone else is still having extreme trouble finding a Wii? I live in San Diego and they still seem impossible to find in stores. Are there any places I should be checking? Anything to make them easier to find? Is this normal for them to STILL be impossible to find, this long after launch?
Sign up for alerts at wiitracker.com; I used it and got a few alerts, though I ended up getting two Wiis last Christmas season without those alerts. The only reliable method is the good ol' shoeleather method; get up early and hit a store on a Sunday, and pick store locations and chains that aren't very high-profile. I'd say skip Best Buy/Circuit City entirely and go for Sears, Toys R Us, K-Mart and the like, because not as many people hit them up. There's a Toys R Us in a small, kind of ghetto strip mall by my place that routinely had Wiis all through last December.
This Sunday, a shit-ton of retailers are going to have Wiis ready for Brawl, so this weekend is actually a very good time. It's only going to get tougher in the coming months, because you have Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit ready to carpet-bomb the West.
Alternatively (since not all stores get their shipments at the same time) call up a few stores that carry them in your area (or go there) and ask to speak to a manager. Be polite and ask the manager when they get their shipments, and when they might expect to be getting in more Wii units.
Doesn't always work, but a lot of times you'll get a time. Then show up at the store before that time.
When do GameStops recieve their shipment of Wiis?
I preordered Brawl without a Wii because I need it, it would nice to just get both at the midnight release if I can.
Also, if my replacement debit card doesn't arrive today, heads will roll. And by heads will roll I mean I will probably go beg my aunt for money.
Jesus. It's absolutely unbelievable that the Wii is still this hard to find, 16 months after launch. And we still have idiots on the forums calling it a fad and comparing it to the Furby.

This isn't normal, but neither has the demand for the system, which has not only been unprecedented, and virtually impossible for any company to accurately predict, let alone produce supply for, especially for a conservative company like Nintendo, which also happens to be a fairly small company compared to its giant competitors. The PS2 is the most successful console ever, and the Wii is establishing its installed base an nearly twice the speed of the PS2.
I recommend checking circulars, calling stores at random intervals, and just asking clerks at any random chance you get. Trackers work some times.. but I think checking circulars and arriving early are the best way to do this.
I found that the best way to get your hands on a Wii was to stand in line the night before launch, even though most of your friends made fun of your for it. That way, when they are running around trying to find one over a year later, laughing back at them is very satisfying.
Something you might want to try when they invent time travel or whatever.
I did that and got a Wii at launch Then a friend offered me more than it was worth and since there weren't really any games yet I just pawned it off figuring they'd be easy to find by the time Smash and what not came out.
Boy was I wrong.

Target stores get their Wii shipments in on the Saturday overnight truck. That means, call Target on Saturday and ask if they expect to get any Wiis in. If they do, show up at the store just before opening time on Sunday, and you should get your Wii.
Wow. My brother really lucked out last summer if they are still hard to get.
We actually checked Best Buy first, and they said they would get a few in their shipment in an hour and a half. We decided to check out some other stores in the interim to see if we could just grab one and go. We checked five stores and they were all out. We finally got back to Best Buy at about the right time and they grabbed one out of the back for us.
I got a second Wii in January as a surprise for my girlfriend. I'd been keeping an eye out on the www.cheapassgamer.com forums. One of the threads there has the information from the next weekend's circulars from the big stores, and Circuit City was listed as having Wiis that weekend.
I went there an hour before they opened and there was only one person waiting. By the time they opened, there were about 20 people waiting outside, and they only had about 12.
Just to echo everyone else on this, watch the circulars and when you see an ad guaranteeing a certain amount in-stores that Sunday show up before opening. A good place to watch is cheapassgamers.com , they post circulars weeks in advance.
For March 9-15 (this weekend): Target and Circuit City have none, Best Buy will have a minimum 15 per store. So show up early this coming Sunday.

Nintendo is the only company among the three who can't afford to compensate failure for a product by falling back on other sources of profits. Sony has T.V.s and misc. electronics, music, escort services (probably) and Microsoft has their software department and mobsters to buy/shutdown the competition. And I heard that both Sony and Microsoft console divisions are having a hell of a hard time making money by themselves. Nintendo has to thread lightly.

I have an alternate strategy. It involves ninjas and fancy gadgets. I think you'd like it.
I was just stupidly crazy lucky when I found mine.
I called GameStop the day I decided I wanted one and asked them if they had any Wiis. They said they had four, so I had them save me one. I went down and bought it.
I felt kind of bad because I knew people who had been searching for months, and I didn’t have to try. You just have to be in the right place at the right time.
I got mine by following an internet rumor that there would be 15 or more Wiii at every Best Buy next sunday, about two weeks after launch. I got to the BB at like six in the morning. While driving there, I kept thinking "Man, I'm going to look like such an idiot. It's two weeks after launch. I'm going to be the only one here. I'm going to be standing in front of a store for four hours, alone."
I got there and there were twenty people already waiting. Two had been waiting since last night. Luckily, the store had forty-odd Wiii in stock that day.
According to the circulars, BB is doing the same thing this coming Sunday, so go get one then.

Mine was acquired at a mall GameStop back in July or August. Walked in on my lunch break, asked if they had one, then paid for it in cash.
Stores like Meijer or KMart are usually likely to have a couple in stock, as opposed to other big stores that emphasize their entertainment sections (Wal-Mart).
Can you get them if you order them online? I'd imagine if you ordered one on Amazon you'd get on a waitlist and get it eventually, without having to make any phone calls or driving all over the damn place.
But I haven't placed an order so I don't know if it's at all feasible, or if the online stores simply never get any.

I find that so hilarious. I wonder(and personally speculate) that Nintendo might finally meet demand by the summer. I would imagine smash brothers not going to help in a few days.

Wii Fit isn't going to help either, considering the mainstream media is going ape over it.

I think thats what the deal is. The Wii attracts so many non-standard gamers that there just isn't enough to go around. I've heard of hospitals and senior centers wanting them. It just seems.. weird.

It's not so surprising, really -- we just didn't believe a market was there, and Nintendo had faith in their strategy and is reaping the rewards. Blue Ocean works. The Wii is the only console my grandma (70+) has ever mentioned. She said, "Have you heard about that game thing where you move the remote like in real life? I played bowling on one, the other day!" She was very excited.
Unless this is just a regional thing, Wii's will be in the ad this Sunday for Best Buy, which means there will be some in our store, and we'll pass tickets out to people waiting in line before we open.
We get regular shipments as well, but doing it this way is probably the best way to guarantee yourself a copy.

Still remember? Shit, somebody just made the comparison earlier today. I think it was DarkWarrior in the 360 Blu-Ray drive thread.
So today I got up nice and early to find me a Wii only to discover that Best Buy was already open because of Daylight Savings Time
and then i went to this out of the way toys r us and went to their electronics aisle to look for a wii rather than asking an employee first because i am dumb as hell
and then as i go to ask someone the person ahead of me gets the last wii
and they are sold out everywhere and assholes are putting them up on craigslist for $320 and im considering getting one because i hunger for brawl
barglebarglebargle
However, I also bought the Azumanga Daioh (lol weeaboo) Omnibus so there is some good in this cold, dark world.
I spent a few days last month trying to track down a Wii in my area. Unfortunately, my timing is always off ('Oh, we had some of those in yesterday!' 'Sorry, the truck is late..' when I'm using my lunch break and can't really wait for it, etc). And so far I'm not yet desperate enough for one to resort to enriching the scalpers on Craigslist (one of whom hit the Wal-Mart across the street from where I live, buying all ten of their Wiis by claiming he was buying them for a non profit charity, the jerk). So I soldier on, Wii-less.
The bitter irony is that I did see them around my area back in October and November, but I was flat broke around that time, and couldn't afford one right then. I thought that surely, after Christmas, the blasted thing would be around in the same numbers as PS3s and Xbox360s are. Boy was I wrong..
My roommate and I got ours at Circuit City in August of '07. They told us they get them in on Sunday (why the Hell does Nintendo ship stuff on Sunday???) so we went up there Sunday morning and sure enough they had about 50 behind the counter in the customer service department. I still don't really understand why Nintendo can't just triple or quadruple manufacture. These things have to be pretty simple to make compared to 360s or PS3s and it would be almost impossible to over-estimate demand at this point. I only say this because I know a lot of people who have just given up on trying to find one saying its not really worth the trouble anymore.

I was playing Wii sports by 11am.
I have very few times seen them available on the highstreet, but they are available online pretty constantly in the UK.

I'll be at Best Buy on Sunday for Brawl.
Future Shop and Best Buy all got about 60 Wiis per store in Lower Mainland BC.
FS barely sold any at the one I went to, should still be a few left if you're lucky.
Best Buy is holding them until Sunday as per their Weekly Ad
