Galactic Command -- Echo Squad SE Derek Smart's new game
New York, USA (March 7, 2008) - Leading PC digital distribution platform GamersGate announced today that much awaited Galactic Command Echo Squad SE – Episode 1 is now live and available for direct download.
Galactic Command – Echo Squad SE features exciting and deeply engaging gameplay which takes space combat fans old and young back to the early days of the genre. As the wing leader of an elite squad of combat pilots, the player takes part in an engaging storyline in mankind's battle for survival and supremacy.
With ground breaking graphics, AI and gameplay (single and multiplayer) technologies, a large seamless space and planetary game world, advanced shader model 2.0 visuals and professional audio from awarding winning Somatone and Soundrama studios, Galactic Command – Echo Squad SE takes gamers to the edge and back.
The public demo is coming sometime this month. We did a closed tech preview exclusive to IGN's FilePlanet subsscribers about two weeks ago and we got some very good feedback from that.
If you're a space sim fan, I think you'll like this one, but don't take my word for it. Wait for the demo.
In fact, here's my pledge to you: If you're a space sim fan, can't wait for the demo and you buy the game (Gamers Gate already has it online, Direct2Drive follows later today I think) but think its crap, I'm tits up and talking trash, I'll personally refund your money. And you still get to keep the game (i.e. I won't invalidate your DRM license on the server).
Of course, graphics don't make a game good, but anyone who says those graphics are 1999, needs to upgrade their XT. Yeah, I know, baiting is fun, but what the hell.
Come on, the great Derek wouldn't lie to you. Derek Smart Derek Smart Derek Smart.
I have this novel idea that instead of working on episodic content he should just polish the game to the point where you can install it and run it smoothly. His games seem to suffer waaay too much from the "let's include the kitchensink" syndrome, when it's obvious that he lacks the resources for the features that he has in mind. He seriously should seriously tighten up the games first and work from that, but that would require listening to others I guess.

That's a lot of shiny, colorful lights. I bet this game can give you a seizure. Anyways, I watched the gameplay video of it, and it looks horrid. If you guys are craving a nice indy space game, though, you should check out Evochron Renegades.

He should've just shoved light bloom into the Freespace 2 engine and used that.
He should have just just repackaged Freespace 2 except with the enemy now being vending machines.
I'm just glad he never actually got his hands on the Freespace licence. As it stands, the SCP is actually doing quite well.
I need to redownload it, now that I got my joystick and CDs back.
Shall we turn this into a Freespace 2 thread?
You don't actually need your CD's to play the SCP. It downloads everything you need.
And I need to get hold of a decent joystick sometime. It's been so long since I had one. Heck, so long since I needed to use one if I'm honest. Freelancer is the last space combat game I played and that was mouse driven.
Thank god! The more time Derek Smart spends making hideous, awful games like this one, the less time he has to spend on pursuing the Freespace license.
Note to Volition: Spend the money you make on Saint's Row 2 to buy the license. PLEASE!
Someday, archaeologist-art critics are going to praise Derek Smart's games as unheralded triumphs of outsider art, like those tin-can sculptures made by retards in the Appalachians
Stop tormenting me with thoughts of a new Freespace. Stop it. It burns. *sob*
I'd kill to see a Space Trader game using the engine of Freespace 2. Furious and fun combat with some of the largest capital ships ever seen in a space combat game? Why, yes please!

That's almost what X3 is. The combat's a little lacking though.

The combat in X3 leaves a lot to be desired, unfortunatly. That's why I'd love to have the Freespace engine in a Space Trader, the combat is fast and furious and the handling of the ships are just spot on.
So is this actually him, or just the best alt ever?
Nah, I'm pretty certain it's an alt. The Real Derek Smart would probably call you a retarded loser and say that you're just jealous of the fact that he's made and released commercially successful games all by himself that real people appreciate whilst all you can do is cry like the unproductive moron that you are. Or something along those lines.
That's pretty much how things went a few years ago when he was... ahem... conversing with a bunch of people from SCP that gatecrashed the avault.com forum where Derek Smart was talking about how he was planning on acquiring the Freespace licence to make a new game. It was basically one big cat-fight.

Fuck off, guy.

What a game that was!

The future is powered by glowsticks!
...for a game from 1999.
Edit: Apparently the BluesNews commenters agree with me.

Not since Wing Commander IV have I seen such graphic quality.

Thanks for reminding me. Now I need to find the 'games I regret buying' thread.
I already posted about Battlecruiser Millennium.
I'll pass this along to my brother, how's that?

Almost.
