Help me find a good laptop

I come to you fine folks of PA to help me in finding a laptop. I'm located in eastern Canada so that kind of limits my possibilities. The reason I'm asking here is because I've been way out of the loop in regard to the new dual core processors, and I have no clue what's good and what's not. Also in the way of brands, which are good and which are bad: HP, Sony, Dell, Toshiba, etc? (Oh yeah I'm looking for most likely a 15.4 inch laptop, but if there are any really good deals on the 14 inch ones, I may be able to change)

Dell.ca seems to be having a sale on, so if you could look those over and give me some thoughts? I also have a Futureshop in the area, a Wal-Mart, and that's pretty much all the big names I can think of. I could also buy on-line, but of course it has to be from a well known website, not nigerianlaptops4sale.net.

On to the specs I'm thinking around 2Ghz dual core (Once again I'm not sure how powerful dual cores are compared to the old P4/AMD's), and 2-3 gigs of ram. One thing I've found while looking at sites like dell and futureshop is that they come crammed with useless stuff and I'd love to find one without all that, just plain old Windows Vista (or XP) would be fine with me.

The price, you ask? Between $1000-$1200 would be nice. Feel free to show me some higher/lower if you think it's a good deal.

Please help me PA!

edit: Not interested in a Mac.

Might as well get this out of the way.

Have you thought about Apple laptops?

I recently bought This HP laptop from best buy about two weeks ago for $1000 USD. I am extremely happy with it so far. The only complaint I have is that it came with an HD-DVD player, however I guess with a blu-ray player it would cost a lot more. A comparable laptop at Dell would cost at least $300 more.

With this laptop I can play all the newest games (except Crysis didn't work so well) But Bioshock, and COD4 and others can play perfectly at almost highest settings.

As much as I disagree with the way Best Buy puts pressure on you and does business, they certainly had the best prices on laptops that I found anywhere. I'm not sure how available they are to you way out in Canada though.

It also plays Velociraptor Safari perfectly, which is all that really matters anyway.

edit: It does come with Windows Vista though, which I know a lot of people dislike. I would just like to add that I have had a very pleasant experience with Vista so far, and the only negative thing I've experienced with it is getting used to the differences from XP. So don't let vista scare you away.

Looks the same as this one at Best Buy Canada. Thanks a lot for the info, and also thanks for the gaming info, I'd like it to be able to run most games as well.

What do you mean by 'most games'? Because for that price you're going to be pretty damned lucky to find something with a decent 3d graphics chip.

And by decent I mean something that doesn't use shared memory. I guess spacerobot's works fine though.

Okay since I am really impatient I am probably going to buy that one later today when I get back from my first-aid course. I'll check this thread before I buy though to see if there's any other deals you guys can think of. Thanks a lot.

www.ncix.com - Canadian site, based here in B.C., but will ship anywhere in Canada no problem. You can even pay with Interac online, which is awesome.

www.tigerdirect.ca - Another Canadian site, they have a lot of shit, but sometimes there are some really good deals.

    Good luck.

    Err, yeah, no Macs.

If I might ask, why not? You can run one dual-partitioned.
