Food/Snacks for all night videogaming session [Completed]
Hello all, with the advent of the new Smash gaming coming out tonight I have decided to hold a small gathering with some of my close friends (5-8). I wanted to head over to the local grocery store and pick up some food & snacks for the 10+ hour mega session.
I already have the staple chips n’ dip and cola’s.
Do any of you have any tips and or recommendations for drinks and food that would add a nice element to the event?
Thanks guys!
Vathris
::UPDATE::
Just so you guys know, the party went of without a hitch. I had a great selection of food and the SSBB gaming was awesome. I was able to do food and drinks for about 80 bucks.
Hey man, whatever you do get ahold of a cheap $4 plastic garbage can at WalMart or something and put a trash bag in it. Use that for cans (more on those later).
Just get everyone to pitch in and pick up some pizzas, but you might want to remember the napkins and stuff because you don't want grease on your controllers. Or make hotdogs/sausages. They're cheap as hell, easy to make (you can pan fry them, boil them, grill them, microwave them, whatever), and they're easy to eat with one hand. Plus, they're in a bun, so your hands don't really get greasy. Just make sure you have more than just hotdogs/sausages, though, because people will probably get sick of them after a while.
If you can snag a cheap cooler (borrow a small one from a friend or buy a cheap styrofoam one) and fill it up with ice, it's a good spot to throw all those cans of soday you bought. I know you can just walk down the hall into the kitchen, but all of the LAN parties/game gettogethers I've been to have always had a minifridge (preferably) or a cooler right there in the room. It's a lot easier than re-arranging your fridge to fit in all of the soda.
You'll need a lot of soda if you have friends like mine. If eight people drink one soda every two hours (and that is an extremely loose estimate, my friends and I down cans like crazy), that's forty cans of soda over a ten hour period. You can buy two liters and stuff, which is cheaper, but it's much easier to keep track of cans and for some reason (in my experience) cans seem to get knocked over much less often. Also, when they do get knocked over, they drain considerably slower than a cup, which just dumps out all of it's contents at once. So, if you do have a spill, spilling a can will let loose less soda onto your carpet than a cup or mug will.
On a side note, make sure there are a few other TVs with game consoles going, so that the people who aren't playing at any given moment aren't bored. Otherwise, the guy who gets his turn relatively early is going to have a long wait until he plays anything again. If you don't have another TV or two get your friends to bring a couple along. For 5-8 people you'll probably want at three TVs, since I'm assuming four of you will always be on the Wii playing Brawl at any given time. This leaves two more TVs (assuming you've got a full squad of eight dudes) for four more people, and you can knock two of those people out with a TV running Guitar Hero whatever and three of them with Rock Band. At least one of them is bound to bring a handheld or two, so that would give everybody constant access to some form of gaming at all times.
An old roomate and I used to have a huge front room in our apartment, and we had three couches and four TVs all in there, so we had huge gaming get togethers quite a bit. It's fun as hell, and I always thought it was cool when my living room sounded like an arcade.
I'm really tired, so I'm rambling, but if I can think of anything else, I'll let you know.
Even my geeky soda guzzling, horrible eating habits friends appreciate some fruit now and then. we've gotten party platters of grapes and such before and they have gone over well. Epecially if some one in your group is on a diet. I'd also pick up some tasty Jones soda, a big tub of rainbow sherbet, and another tub of vanilla icecream. That always goes over well too.

Holy heck, dude thank you for the post! I appreciate all the help. I also plan to get some cheese & meat platters to round the edges of the menu.
Veggies and dip man, veggies and dip.
But don't buy a platter, they are ridiculous. Prepare it yourself.
Oh, I completely agree. You can slice up some celery, buy a bag of baby carrots, broccoli, or whatever else you want to have. Buy, or even make a simple ranch dip. You have an awesome platter for a few bucks. Compared to the $20 or 30 most grocery stores would charge you, you win.
I'm not putting down the amazing chips, dips, and other awful for you awesomeness. This just helps to make it not seem so heavy.
Also, you're gonna need some fiber to keep you...well you know...going.
As a side note, my very first all night gaming session was fueled by Minute Maid Berry Punch. It is in no way good for you, but it has a ton of sugar, and tastes good.
My friends and I quickly took to calling it Blood Wine, google the nerdy Star Trek reference.
If its your thing, it mixes really well with vodka. Although, that usually doesn't lead to an all night gaming session...unless your idea of gaming is an orgy. Or death...
Beef Jerky
Those Japanese fruit gummi things that are all individually wrapped
WATER
Cup O' Noodles and the like
Apples, Bananas, Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Broccoli, etc. etc. (I love eating all that stuff raw)
Greek stuffed Olives (garlic stuffed = win)
Hummus + Pita brea, Lavash bread, or tortillas
If it's all night, ENERGY DRANKSSSS.
I prefer Bookoo myself, but Rockstar, Monster, and the Moutain Dew energy drinks are all good.
I hate Red Bull, tastes like crap to me.
Also, the "Juice" ones are better tasting if you dislike the energy sugar bite (Think carbonated OJ).
I know some people actually become more tired from energy drinks, but they help me and most of my friends when we LAN it up.
One of these lasted me all night last time:
Strangely enough, Pizza rolls are universally enjoyed whenever I host a gaming event. It's never the same people either. It's like pizza you don't have to order!
Also, have either bread or meat available. People define "real food" differently, but for the most part they crave either meat or un-sugared bread after eating junk food and soda for hours. I usually offer to grill up a burger or chicken breast for anyone who wants it, or in the case of bread I have whole grain bread and peanut butter + jelly.
For drinks, buying cans makes it TOO convenient to drink. I found myself spending LOTS of money on soda in the form of cans, and I threw away more than a DOZEN half full cans at the end of the night. Buying 2 liters and plastic cups seems to work out more efficient. Just be vigilant and watch for spills. Let people know that spills won't be met with anger, but that you simply need to know quickly in order to clean it up fast.
I wouldn't bank TOO heavily on people wanting to eat healthy. Like, don't spend a LOT of money on the veggies/fruit. It's good to have, but make sure it's shit you won't mind polishing off yourself over a week if no one eats any. Food waste should be kept to a minimum.
Also, if you're hosting, remember to HOST. It won't be as much fun as not hosting, but people really appreciate when the place feels taken care of. Make sure to have the food available, offer to cook / prepare it, and make sure everyone knows where napkins are. You'll miss out on the first 1/2 hour of the gaming, but you'll be able to jump in after that. In the case of a 10 hour mega-smash-a-thon, you might want to do a trash collection run after 4-5 hours.
And I guess I just read over this point - If they're your CLOSE friends, shouldn't you be asking what THEY want in a the way of snacks? I usually host a few good friends coupled with complete strangers, so I have to guess. But if you're hosting friends, it's probably just easier to ask them. You will have to wrestle an answer from some people, though.
"Oh i don't care what pop you get" should be met with, "Fine, we're getting 6 liters of diet Ginger Ale."
Gallons of sodas; I'd suggest going ot Sam's or something and buying several flats of liter bottles.
Couple that with a mix of sweet, salty, and veggie/fruit snacks. IME, once people exit their teenage years, they seem to prefer salty snacks (chips, crackers, etc) and fruit/veggie trays to the really sweet stuff.
Flaming Hot Fritos god those things are so fucking delicious
What now? I've seen flaming hot cheetos... but not Fritos. That's like some kind of divine gift. If these actually exist, get them.
I would suggest simple sandwiches personally. We're talking SIMPLE though, no prep time. Put out some pre-cut rolls, lunch meat, pre-sliced cheese, and whatever condiments they might want... and let them go to town.

If it helps any, for cheap and relatively decent pizza Little Caesers pizza sells large cheese and pepperoni pizzas for five bucks each.
But don't buy a platter, they are ridiculous. Prepare it yourself.
