Hey, I just switched from my macbook pro to a regular macbook, as I was able to get a faster computer and pick up a few hundred bucks along the way. I decided to pick up an xbox 360 to fill in the lack of a gaming computer, but I'm really disappointed in the selection of good games. I thought the 360 had the best library of games, but so far all I've really found that everyone agrees is essential is Mass Effect, Bioshock, Oblivion, the Orange Box, and Halo 3. Is there a thread I'm not seeing about essential xbox 360 games, or can someone help me out here? Thanks
Those are just some of the most spectacular. If you lower your standards even just one rung, it opens up even more for games like Earth Defense Force 2017, Overlord, Assassin's Creed, and others.
If you're not seeing a selection of good games, either you're not looking, you're way too fucking picky, or your taste in games sucks.
No, I see a huge selection of games, but I just expected a lot more 'MUST HAVE' games, (that and I am way too picky for games). Assassins Creed! Forgot that one, and I did want to play Devil May Cry 4. Not into skating games since tony hawk sucked so much ass.
If you were to choose between Burnout paradise and like... Forza or other racing games, what would you guys say? (On a side note, do you have to have an XBox Live subscription to play Team fortress 2?)

It depends on whether you want a simulation or arcade racer. Both Forza 2 and Burnout Paradise are worthy games, but Burnout is more fun because it has more variety.
You have to have a Live Gold account to play anything online.
I have guitar hero 3 (wii), is Rock Band unique and fun enough to warrant buying that as well?
No, please choose from one of the other dozen full band games.
Good one. But seriously, that game is damn expensive and I'm a cheap, starving college student. Is it worth buying if I already GH3? Yes?
(in my defense, I play lead guitar/piano for a band, and I get enough music with my recording sessions every day, so I'm not really looking for fake instrument playing...)
skate is a really amazing game that leaves the Tony Hawk games in the dust. It brings realistic skating to the forefront, along with sick visuals and a great control scheme. If you don't want to purchase it straight off, watch some youtube vids of it along with renting it. It's a must-have in my opinion.
Rock Band is the best rhythm/music game ever made. Totally worth buying, even if you have GH3 (you can use the GH3 wireless guitar in Rock Band) and the weekly DLC just makes it that much better. I forgot all about how I owned GH3 after I got it. It's leagues above.
Lost Odyssey is an rpg with fun mechanics and great graphics. Highly recommended.
Gears of War, even if you're not into violence.. is a really great FPS romp. I'd say rent it but don't bother buying it.
Also do yourself a favor and pick up Puzzle Quest, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Geometry Wars. You'll love your 360 for these games alone
(these 3 are all on XBLA)
My Rock Band controller starting fucking up the second time I used it. From what I've read on this forum, I am not alone.
Yeah. Working equipment is pretty essential to having a good time with the game. I had to send mine in, but got 2 working ones back in return and haven't had any problems since..
EDF is mentioned in the first reply to the OP you goofball randombattle.
When's Street Fighter 2 HD Remix due out? If it's out soon, I would consider it essential.
Sorry, but almost everything jumps out as being must-haves on this page. Orange Box, Gears of War, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Geometry Wars and Bioshock are games I would strongly recommend and consider the best of the 360 line-up (that I have played, admittedly). I just have to ask, though...if you don't like really violent games, and you like RPGs, why did you buy an XBOX 360? A PS3, Wii or hell even a PS2 might have been a better choice. Just buy a PS2 if you don't have one anyway, it's the best console since the SNES.
Why would a wii or ps3 be a better choice for RPGs?
Because the XBOX 360 is devoid of good ones, aside from Lost Odyssey? With the Wii you get Virtual Console, which has a lot of the classic and best RPGs of any generation, and with the PS3 you will likely get most of the future Square Enix titles, including FFXIII, and you can play all of the PS2 RPGs. With the XBOX 360 you get about 3 or 4 worth playing.

Not true if you're buying a new PS3.
As for this thread, Rock Band and Earth Defense Force 2017. Everything else is just fluff.

I've played Bioshock, Half life 2, Resident Evil 4, etc. I don't not like violent games, but UBER Violent gore fests, and games that are outright explicit like GTA don't appeal to me.

Mass Effect is superb, and Oblivion isn't exactly bad. In addition to Lost Odyssey, as you say. Fallout 3 will also be coming out later this year, or its supposed to, at least.
As for the others....well, you are correct. But you are basically just listing the SNES and PS2 rpg libraries. A better deal if you don't already have those consoles, I suppose.
i guess I should also clarify that I have strange buying habits. I tend to buy a console on eBay for cheap, buy the best of the best games for that system, and resell the whole collection in 6 months, losing around 50-100 bucks in the process, but I've had nearly every console under the sun, I just really want to play mass effect and finish bioshock, and wondered what else I should get along the way. (Also, Force Unleashed is coming to Wii??? Is it a dumbed down version or the same game?)

Yeah, my bad on both accounts. Even so, I think we're going to see a more solid presence of RPGs on PS3 and Wii. The XBOX 360 hasn't exactly been an (J)RPG-fan's dream, and if the XBOX is any indicator it's not going to be. So take it for what it is; me talking out of my ass.
Well, you never know. Mistwalker proves that at least one Japanese studio has interest in the console, and maybe others will follow. The Last Remnant is coming to 360 (as well as PS3), and Infinite Undiscovery (the Star Ocean guys developing, published by SE) is 360-exclusive.

Aren't 60 gigs still available?
I suppose it depends on where you look, but a month ago, my wife bought a PS3 for my birthday, and couldn't find a 60 gig anywhere (she even had the manager at the GameCrazy we frequent checking all over the region).

Burnout Paradise
Crackdown
Devil May Cry 4
Lost Odyssey
Skate
I recommend these.
Oh hell, yeah. Rez and TMNT Arcade. And Bionic Commando soon.

I like the Rock Band guitars more than the GH ones.
*click click click clickity click click click FUCK YOU*
Also, overdrive/solo effects are pure ace.

The title says Essentials.. But for some reason I don't see Earth Defense Force anywhere on this page..
I think there must be something wrong with the forum because there is no way a topic about 360 essentials can be a real topic with out mentioning EDF.
I never asked for this!
Actually, the first reply mentioned that game being essential.

Dumbed-down.
Get the 360/PS3 version.
Yeah... Oops. But like zombie mambo said, most of it wasn't quite that violent.
