Yeah, those grey slimes are nasty mothers. They killed my gold plating on weapon/shield already but I made it through with the other mods. I think I remember running into another enemy that started taking -3 off my weapon/shield each turn from an earlier run, but I can't remember what it was to save my life.

EDIT: Gah! I didn't know about those high level walruses either! I'm going to be super paranoid around them from now on since I don't have the walrus mod on my shield.

Just remember, Bufu staff + strengthening jar = anything even remotely dangerous gets meat'd on sight. I've got a 99 charge Bufu staff I'm saving for my Ravine run.

Oh wow. I didn't know that a strengthening jar increased staff charges too. This game is always full of surprises. Just hit Floor 78 and both my sword and antidrain armband got cursed by a curse trap and my wood arrows got cursed by curse gran. I guess it could have been worse and have it hit my shield instead and lose my def mods. Now that would be grim.

Seems like things have just started to spiral out of control, and I see death lurking around every corner. I still have a lot of staves though so I'll just try to be a bit cautious and a lot tricky. I expect to be doing a lot of panicky running for the stairs fairly soon.

Bufu is key and, rumor has it, once past level 50 you might find Trapbands or Bufu Knives in shops of FFP! The only thing you have to consider, elevature, is that since you can't bring anything into FFP you're often pretty limited in what you'll run across and how much you can build it up. I think this is why FFP is my favorite, while it is DEFINITELY the most luck based of the dungeons since you can't count on your buffed up uber gear, by that same token it forces you to really adapt and make the best use out of any annoying thing you find (even a Weed might be key to saving your life at some point). This is not to say the Uber Gear Dungeons are a cakewalk as I haven't even cleared more than Ceremonial Cave, but I don't really like their open book nature in some respect. Since you CAN bring in any equipment you want we're going to make sure that ONLY if you bring the most primo gear that took your 100's of hours to build up you'll even have a chance at clearing them. I find the building up of gear pretty boring but know to go in without doing so means I'm just a greasy stain on the first floor.

You're right on the money about making the most out of anything you come across in Fay's Final. I love having to think creatively about different ways to maximize the use of items and situations. That's where the game really started shining the brightest for me. It almost feels like an old arcade game to see how far you could get on your limited resources (a quarter or two.)

My legendary (in my mind) Fay's run just hit floor 87. I luckily found a scroll of need on the same floor, so equipped all my cursed gear, and got all the curses removed. HELL YEAH! Man, that was a totally lucky break. I think I may still have a chance at beating this damned dungeon!

The Borg mamel rocks so hard. It was worth every soul crushing defeat to get him. I named him Locutus. :)

For what it's worth, I have 197:53:49 on my save. I believe about half of that (~100 hours) was spent attempting Fay's Final Puzzle. Crazy.

I did encounter quite a few shops past level 50, but never saw a bufu knife in a drop/shop. I didn't run into the ill luck herb, but did get an Invisibility herb around floor 80 which I had never seen before. This was my first run getting past level 50 though.

Reward and ending spoilers for Fays' Final Puzzle:
The reward for completing Fay's Final Puzzle is you wind up on the other side of the world (like you dug right through the center of the earth) and get to Fay's hometown. Monsters and humans live here happily together. Apparently a weird creature just moved in and if you talk to it, it will ask to accompany you on your adventure. It's a Borg Mamel (a cyborg Mamel) and acts as your fourth companion. The Borg Mamel kicks ass because he TALKS LIKE A ROBOT and says thing like "ME LIKE YOU FRIEND" in addition to beating the holy crap out of enemies. You can also level him up by talking to him and feeding him things he requests like a riceball, or a herb, or a shield, etc.
    Talk us through it.
What was your identification strategy. Item use vs conservation on early floors?
Tell me more, tell me more.

Here's everything I can think of:

    HERB AND SCROLL ID STRATEGY:

Every 2-3 floors, I'll do the following after clearing out the monsters/items
    * Go to the exit room and stand inside the room in the doorway
    * Eat unID'd herbs first
    * Then read unID'd scrolls

I usually wait to do testing every 2-3 floors in case I run into a shop where the selling price would tell me what class the item was in. I created a spreadsheet from the item prices over at the Shiren wiki for a reference. Sell prices are also an excellent way to determine if weapons/shields are cursed or have + bonuses before trying them on.

UnID'd scrolls like Hands Full, and Silence can really mess up your day if you haven't cleared up the level yet since you can't pick up and/or use items, so that's why I save testing for after I cleared the floor. I stand in the doorway rather than on the stairs in case a scroll is a monster house. I'd rather back up one space into the hall and easily take out the monsters one by one so I can get the exp and items. I try to avoid testing scrolls on any floors with field/jar bandits since they'll just weed-i-fy all the items in a monster house if it's created.

    MONSTER SCROLLS:
Monster scrolls rule. I love them and use them as much as I can for extra exp and items. They are a bit risky and sometimes they backfire and result in death, but as long as you have an escape path into a hallway and are prepared, they are worth the risk imo.

ID CLASS ONLY IS ENOUGH (SOMETIMES):
If the shopkeeper wants to buy your scroll for 300, you now know it's a 1000 scroll which could be blastwave, powerup, or trap. Rather than just reading it on an exit so you know for sure what the next one is, why not save it and use it in a situation where you might need it and it will benefit you. Let's say you hit a monster house and have a few turns to react. Read the scroll. Both powerup and blastwave would be awesome. If it's trap, make sure you have a herb of sight on hand.

I usually sell the 800 herb class ones, and never test them since 2 of the 4 have dire consequences. The 800 herbs are:
    Poison
    Bitter
    Strength
    Dragon

Strength is awesome, but it's only a 1 in 4 chance for it, so not really worth the risk. Dragon herbs are nice for early floors, but quickly lose their usefulness as you get to higher floors. 800 herbs are good candidates for going into ID Jars, along with most other herbs (since you might be able to ID a revival/victory with a jar and not waste it by consuming it.)

    EASY RICEBALLS:
I like to hang on to somewhat less useful items until I hit a rice family floor for rice ball conversion. It's the only sure way to keep food handy through the dungeon. I try to keep a misfortune or happiness staff handy to level up or level down a rice enemy to the rice changer class, so this works on later floors with rice bosses/masters and early ones with rice babys. I usually save the conversion attempt for the end of the floor when I can feel comfortable spreading out my good gear in the room with the stairs so I only have bad items and equipped items in my inventory for riceball change. A strategy I also use is to postpone staff a rice changer so he'll be paralyzed on the stairs for the end of the floor conversion process. If I don't have junk items (like cursed ones or bad ones,) I'll try to use single arrows. Before awaking the rice changer, I'll shoot a few arrows onto the floor, and then when he converts a single arrow in my inventory, I'll move onto the next floor space to pick up another single arrow for him to convert, and repeat the process. It's important to note that a decent shield is needed. If I don't have one then I'll postpone 2-3 rice changer and only try to get 1-2 riceballs out of the whole deal. Usually only letting them take 1-2 hits on me before killing them.

    JAR TESTING:
Jar testing is tricky since there's a few useless jars that behave similarly to a melding/strengthening jar. I like to wait to test jars in case I run into a shop, because if you determine the jar class by sell price, then it's much easier to test. If left on my own though, I'll use a single arrow if there are 4-5 slots on the jar (and one less won't matter much), or if I have two of the same jar. If I have spare weapons/shields then I'll test with those, but only if the extra w/s has strong base like an iron shield/bronzeward, or a katana/mastersword, and usually only if I've already ID'd a few of the other jars and feel like I have a good chance of it being Strengthening/Melding.

I also save most of my ID scrolls for ID'ing Jars. It's also a good idea to take out all unID'd items from holding jars (including staves!) and have them directly in inventory whenever reading an ID scroll in case you get the bonus of it ID'ing everything in inventory. Even if you know the type of stave it is, a bonus full ID will give you the info on how many charges are left.

    ARMBAND TESTING:
Happy, Sight, Pitch, and Passage are easy immediate tests. I try these 4 tests with each new armband and if it doesn't match then I unequip it and wait for a shop, ID scroll, or ID Jar. There are some nasty armbands that aren't readily apparent like ones that double hunger, or give an enemy a chance at a critical hit, so I don't risk it. I'll also test for Confusion/Sleep if I find a trap. i.e. I'll equip the unID'd armband and purposefully trip the trap to see if the armband prevents the effect.

    ITEM NAME SHORTHAND :
Rather than manually inputting the full name, I have shorthand I use to name items based on class when I can get buy/sell prices from a shop and/or testing. For example:
SWV: (Strenghthening, Weakening, or Venting Jar)
    CHHP: Change, Holding, Hiding, Pointless
    Kn: Knockback Staff
    Dop: Doppleganger Staff

I usually name herbs/scrolls with price class value to save time. For example:
    800
    800 2
    800 3
    1000
    1000 2

This took me a while to adjust to until I became more familiar with item prices and classes, but is a huge time saver.

    EARLY LEVELING:
A technique that really came in handy is leveling up enemies and then killing them to get mega xp early. The best early xp is from a cave mamel (a leveled up a pit mamel) since it gives 800 xp. Kill two of them on floor 1 or 2, and you'll be level 10, and then level 13 with your second kill. It makes the process of surviving while you try to get better gear a lot easier. There are a couple of ways to level one up, and a few ways to kill them too.

LEVEL UP A PIT MAMEL TO CAVE MAMEL TECHNIQUES:
    * Swing a Staff of Happiness at a Pit Mamel
    * Lead a pit mamel to a room with another mamel and use a Doppleganger staff on it so it will kill it and level up. Doppleganged Rice baby's are a little trickier for a pit mamel to kill since they have more hp.

    KILLING A CAVE MAMEL:
    * A Knockback staff always does 5 damage which is exactly how many hp a cave mamel has. Insta-kill.
    * Shoot it with arrows (you'll probably also have to paralyze it and back away then resume shooting since arrows will only do 1 damage and you need to hit it 5 times.
    * Dopplegang the leveled up cave mamel so it wanders around while you beat on it. Kind of risky since if it decides to swing at you, you're toast (usually) since it does ~40 damage. Usually worth the risk though if you're out of options.
    * Sloth it, and then hit, step back, hit, step back for 5x
    * Throw items at it if you're completely out of options. Most will do 2 damage. Better to lose a wood shield and be level 10-13.

Staves are going to be your best bet to take out a cave mamel early on, since they are super easy to identify and you can plan your strategy.

    DEFENDING AGAINST DIRTY THIEVING WALRUS'S:
I found a great strategy on this run (after Lord Gek put the fear of God in me about the damn things stealing my equipped weapon/shield.) When you see one, shoot a single arrow in it's vicinity. It will almost always go after the single arrow on the ground and steal it instead of coming for you.

    EQUIPPING ITEMS:
Always test equip an Armor ward early on and hope it is cursed. A cursed weapon/shield loses its mods, so a cursed armor ward will give you a 8 def shield and the double hunger mod doesn't actually go into effect. Plan on dealing with unequipping it later when you have a better shield by either a blessing scroll, scroll of need, or unequip trap.

Test equip and ID all weapons/shields/armbands whenever you find an unequip trap since you can easily unequip a cursed item by tripping the trap.

    IMPORTANT AND NECESSARY GEAR:
    * Antidrain armband - later drain floors are extremely nasty and you could lose 10 levels and go down to 1 strength within a few turns.
    * Sleepless armband - Sleep radishes and later mages will mess you right up without one
    * Melded Dragonward and Blast mods on your shield - The only way to survive dragons that shoot fire through walls, and tanks who have double turns.
    * Strengthening Jar and extract scrolls (so you can extract, meld, and then reuse the jar after finding a new melding jar)
NOTE: Extract scrolls do NOT recover slots on melding jars, so once you meld, that open slot is gone forever. Found that out this last run which was a bit of a shock since I assumed they worked the same way as strengthening and ID jars.

May the winds of Kron bless your journey my fellow wanderers. I hope these tips come in handy, and good luck on Fay's Final Puzzle! :)

Congratulations IdolNinja, thats an epic feat of gaming awesomeness I don't think I will be doing anytime soon.

I haven't even played this game for a while either, just sort of got pissed off after losing my awesome shield to a CellArmor thing knocking it away and it just disappearing completely. I wasn't wearing a Pitcher's armband, it didn't land in water. It was just instantly gone, no explanation given. So I still haven't even attempted the Tainted Path or Ravine of the Dead. I should probably start just doing Fay's instead.

Lately I've just been busy with my new computer that I haven't played much of anything off it. I'm even neglecting GTA 4 right now. Too busy playing Team Fortress 2 and City of Heroes, and now Age of Conan and Medieval II Total War.

There is a riceball scroll that will turn any item into a riceball, but I think you need to have that one unlocked first from Fay's Final Puzzle. You could scribe a scroll of Need which will heal, bless, or fill hunger when read. Just make sure that you're fully healed with no cursed items equipped, so it will be sure to fill your hunger when read. Also, make sure you're actually starving when you read it. Also keep in mind that eating any herb will fill your hunger by 5, even weeds.

A scroll of light will show you everything on the floor (except traps.) An armband of sight will show all enemies and items (but not traps, floor layout or exit like the scroll of light.) An herb of sight will show traps. There is nothing that will show what an item on the ground is unless you stand on it though. For monster ID, you could just shoot an arrow at it from a distance and it will say that x monster received x damage.

Thanks. I'll make a scroll of need and save it for when my hunger's almost at 0. Are there any adverse effects for letting your hunger get that low? I don't want to get to 5 hunger only to fall unconscious and starve while I'm out.

As far as I can tell, all of those items only show stuff on the minimap. What I'm talking about is something like the ; key in Nethack, so I can see what a monster is called before I attack it and so on.

Edit: Damnit! I wrote "Need" and it came out invalid. Is it case sensitive or something? I've got a cursed scroll of need though - what would happen if I read it?

Edit 2: I just found a trap that turned me into a rice ball. Is there anything I can do with this?

Nope. Nothing like that exists in game as far as I know.

When your hunger hits 0, you start losing 1 HP per turn, so you'll usually have plenty of time to take care of it. There are no other adverse affects.

Alistair: Resuce is on the way!

flux, no need to send a revival herb. I have like 10 of them in reserve. If you have a Gold shield and/or sword, or a plating scroll handy though, that'd be great. I lost my Gold mods to a gray slime rescuing Xagarth last run.
Awesome. Thanks a lot. I sent you a Gold Shield.

Edit: Yay, I finally beat a bonus dungeon thanks to that rescue :) I had 3 Pacorepkin meats and got 2 Death Angel meats so I just flew through the walls for the last few floors to find Naoki.

Cursed scrolls won't let you read them. They're just "locked" until you can use a scroll of blessing on them. Cursed herbs work the same way. Being a riceball wont' help your hunger in any way unfortunately.

EDIT: The invalid scroll might be because you've never read a Need scroll before. I know that's what happens with Removal (you have to read one first to unlock it before you can scribe one on a blank scroll.) I didn't think it was the case for the standard scrolls though, but it looks that way unfortunately. You know, if you do die, just request a rescue via wifi. Whoever rescues you can send you an item and we can surely send you a jar with some riceballs.

Blank scrolls do seem to be case-sensitive.

Awesome. I'll send out a request if it comes to that. It's kind of lame that monsters don't set off traps, though. Seems like a missed opportunity, no?

The trap dungeon (a bonus post-game dungeon) is based around that mechanic actually.

So it looks like I need to be rescued. My friend code is 0130-2793-5547. Any takers?

I tried adding your friend code to my DS, but it was not able to find any rescues from that friend code.

Can you get the rescue number? Also, we usually do public rescue requests here just because they are a bit simpler.

Don't I need your friend code in order for you to do that? Anyway, I set it to "Rescue by a friend" and it gave me 0000-0000-6034. I have no idea if that works if we haven't traded codes though.

Yeah, looks like we have to have both entered each others friend codes in order to do friend-only requests - I can't accept the code you listed. Want to re-submit it as an anyone request?

I was killed by a master-hen while starving on the 18th floor, if that helps.
