Reset Power management on PC Laptops. cure dead batteries?
My Apple laptop's battery had stopped holding a charge a year or so ago and I'd been running it off the mains. Basically, if it was unplugged from the main for a short period of time it would shut down and often if it had been turned off but not plugged into the mains for a period of time it would have to be plugged in for at least half an hour before starting up. Recently it refused to start up at all, so I went to Apple's support pages and discovered that rebooting the power management might resolve the issue. It did and then some, not only did it start up after reseting it, the battery now holds a charge again!
So, my question is. I have an Acer laptop (1300 I think) who's battery also stopped holding a charge. If you so much as bump the power chord when the laptop is switched on it'll turn off immediately. I always assumed that these issues were just due to the batteries going dud eventually, now however, I'm not so certain. Do PC laptops have something similar to Apple's power management that can be easily reset? With the Apple laptop it was just a case of holding down the right combination of keys on the keyboard, but I'm happy to tinker around inside the BIOS and whatever else on a PC if necessary. My problem is I have no idea if the PCs have something similar or even what it would be or where to look for it - is it a hardware thing like the clock battery or a software thing like BIOS or even just an element of the operating system?
