Comparing Website Traffic Numbers

I'm discussing some websites for a research paper, and one aproach is comparing the website traffic.
How can i find out how much traffic a website has? Would mailing the webmaster be the easiest way?
Are there websites i can go to to look at reliable stats for this?

I read about Alexa in the PA comic, but, but how reliable is that info? and either i'm just not seeing it, or is it true that alexa doesn't give actual number, just an abstract rating?

For obvious reasons there are no means in which to measure the traffic of someone-else's website. Sure, you can E-Mail the webmaster, but should they not be willing to pony up that information you could go by the Alexa data. You are correct however, Alexa is only able to measure traffic to a given website by those whom have installed the Alexa toolbar. As the developer of a large E-Commerce website I can confirm that the Alexa numbers are nowhere near the actual numbers I see in my log files. Good luck with your paper!
