So im going to download this and play it for a couple weeks again because its free for old accounts and I have this deep, abiding love of PS. However, I gotta say, why does Sony make it so goddamn hard to get the freaking game on my machine? The only client I could find to download without paying for the game all over again was the Reserves Client, which I hope to god will upgrade or whatever when I log in on my old account.
They couldent just make it possible to log in and download the full client could they?
Anyways, im sure ive probobly got a Vanu on Emerald, so ill see if I cant hook up with you folks for great justice and much beamer hilarity.
I downloaded the station login program and it automatically installed planetside when I told it I wanted to "try" it.
The link in the OP to fileplanet was broken for me.
People need to not run in front of the big dude firing his machine gun
Its not griefing if they're idiots >.>
Earlier today I was riding to somewhere in a harasser with my indoor gear on (which means flamethrower). A mosquito flies by and I see a red dot, so I flip on darklight and see a stealther crouched behind a tree. I try to run him over but he runs to the other side.
So I get out and it's flame on time, I start to chase him with flames spewing forth, some jackass on my team runs right in front of me. This interrupts the progress of both of us, we both get bounced backwards a tiny bit, which also happened to leave us in range of the boomer the stealther had just set. Kaboom. Stealther - 2, me + idiot - 0.
Then the fucking idiot who ran in front of me sends me a tell crying that I shot him with the flame thrower.
I was kind of pissed when I died because of him but that amount of stupidity just made it really funny.
Good question. I think I actually forgot to invite Raslin the other time I was on. We've had nearly a full squad and a full squad on Monday and Tuesday, then steadily decreasing populations down to 2-3 people max Friday. And yes nobody uses the Vent channel for some reason. I'll be on again in a little bit.
how has the game aged? like visually am I going to be appalled?
The visuals stand up well enough but it's pretty old. The big thing is the quirky way the physics in the game work... and when objects collide they don't really react the way you'd think.
I remember playing in the beta before the game's launch, when there were a ton of people running around the sanctuaries. It was awesome. Once the beta ended, I didn't want to pay, so I didn't play until they came out with a 12-day trial. When I started playing the trial, the sanctuaries were practically deserted, nothing like it was in beta, and finding a team was hard to do with nobody around. Disappointing.
I'd probably be willing to get back in on some action if they were still doing the reserves thing. I'm not willing to pay monthly for the game, however.

Yeah the population is pretty atrocious even with it being free right now. The best thing they could have done for the game is up the reserve max BR a little and kept the offer going. It's pretty much the only way they could have a shot at keeping the population up. I'd resub after this offer expired in a heartbeat if there were more people playing but 3-4 partial squads per side fighting over a continent is pretty boring.
If 9000 people were playing, then maybe but that doesn't really seem to happen. Esamir was pop locked tonight which was kinda cool but they are running a really dumb event.
See, there are these characters who are "Black OPs". They're in green uniforms can only spawn at neutral bases/towers and can cap bases/tpwers to turn them neutral. Neat. Here's the problem though, they apparently have ~1k hps and 600 armor according to what they've told people. Which makes them nearly invincible. Sure, you can gang up on one with four or five people and take him down rather quickly but they're doing shit like camping base gens with an entire squad which is more than a little annoying on a cont that is already pop locked and in the middle of a three way battle.
It wouldn't be so annoying but they're attacking VS and NC, not TR. Which means TR is basically just waltzing their way to a cont lock because VS and NC have to worry about 2 other empires and the fact that if they want tech vehicles they have to send half their force to dig out the Black Ops guys.
In short, it's retarded.
I think I'm going to log on my NC character. Maybe with my BR 25 I'll be able to actually accomplish something rather than getting mowed down by people in green uniforms in a futile attempt to get our tech plant back up >_<

I'll be playing NC for a bit. My name is BlueDestinyNC.
I'd say about 80% of the time that I've been playing it's been kind of dumb and boring, but that 20% of the time when there's a raging fight going on with a good number of people it's a lot of fun.
But it sucks when you login and the other two empires have a war going on somewhere and your empire is ghost hacking a continent against a single digit percentage.

Awwwwwww jeah I used to love me some base drops back in the day. I'm so down for this.
I just wish I could remember my old account name, if it even still exists.
Bad thing about Planetside: it lies in limbo between FPS and MMO, which means it has its own unique messed up binds, which means I screw myself up playing both PS and TF2 now.
When I play MMOs my autorun key is always 'R'. However in FPSs that's my reload key. So in PS my reload key is bound to 'Q'. In TF2 'Q' is my "Spy!" key.
So basically I end up trying to autorun a lot in TF2 and reloading whenever I see a cloaker in PS.
Wow, the NC are so much more organized than VS it's not even funny. With Vanu be prepared to spend the whole day footzerging one meatgrinder. With the NC they'll pull tanks and aircraft, break the defense outside and charge in.
Which side gets remote control rocket launchers, I want to be that faction.
NC get the incredibly gay rocket launchers. That said, as annoying as they are on the receiving end, using them is pretty meh. A lot of times you won't get kills because of the long time it takes between shots. What makes'em nasty is every fucking NC and their mother runs with a Phoenix and Jackhammer. So while the Phoenix seems all hot shit, keep in mind when your being hit by them it's usually like a half dozen guys all shooting at you, not just one guy.
Only thing I miss about VS when playing NC is magriders and the driving thereof.
I certed AA2 on my NC newb and fuck if that shit isn't a waste of time if you don't have a super hot gunner. You lose all your momentum and speed every two seconds as you plow into a tiny upslope and it's impossible to get away from anything.
Cruising around in a mag is 10x easier (and more fun) as a driver. A decert will be coming in a few hours.
While we can, if we want to experiment with differant empires, I suggest we do it on Markov. This way we aren't locked out of Vanu on Emerald. It would suck to try to get something together and half the people here can't play because they tried out TR or NC on Emerald and now can't play anything else for 12 hours.

Pheonix is useful but much overrated. It's bad as an AA weapon and has a horrible rate of fire since you have to fly it in on target. As someone who figured he could be some decent BEP in these standoffs I've been hitting lately on VS as a combat engineer I will say it's a nightmare for deployers. Oh, and you're also helpless while flying the thing which cloakers must love. Being able to hit vehicles that try and pull behind hills to repair is a great psychological weapon for shutting down enemy armor users though.
And yes, every NC that has a brain and plans on running into bases to try and cap them uses the Jackhammer. Just like VS use the Lasher and TR use the MCG. All three work wonderfully if you use them intelligently. The Jackhammer is great for when you turn a corner and run into the enemy, like stairwells for example, but it's horrible for hallways and the open rooms in the basement. I will never understand why people think it's a good idea to charge at someone using a Jackhammer when they have an MCG or Lasher. Or hide right next to doors that the enemy will be coming through. Make them come to you and pick them off on the way. Hell I've been taking down Jackhammer users with my trusty Punisher in basement fights. Unless they have personal shield that is. Man, I hate that implant
Personally I use Gauss+Pheonix outdoors because even though the Pheonix leaves me helpless while using it there's no other option for scaring off enemy armor. I've been using the Lancer on VS and I love the thing, especially since I've gotten down leading Mossys and Reavers. I'd kill to be able to couple that thing with a Gauss but locker space is scare enough as it is.
For indoors I go with Jackhammer+Gauss+a Deci in my backpack. I've been considering dropping something to pick up Special Assault so I can replace my Gauss with a Thumper but I don't have any certs I want to part with.
Oh, and some advice for people who haven't played in awhile. In my experince this is a game that takes getting used to everytime you pick it up again and I always spend the first few nights getting killed over and over with little to show for it. Make your first cert Adv targeting. Others are far more useful but the game is much less frustrating when you can see how close you were to killing someone or that you don't actually need to run from that MAX because he's near death and you can probably finish him off.
I am so in for this. I played several years back in some random outfit of VS that me and a friend happened upon in a generator room. We used to hotdrop on the backdoor of bases singing "Its Raining Men" (the singing was perhaps just me...) and go in Lashers blazing. I can feel my giddiness rising at the prospect of a return to purpler times.
Anyway, I'll definitely be on tonight if I can get it up and running. I think I have a VS on Emerald already, somewhere in the teens.
Phoenix is a good cert for new NC chars since it's a safe and fairly guaranteed (if not slow) way of getting xp. Just wait until your base is being sieged and sit inside a wall/doorway and look for armor or (those poor, poor) MAXes.
Honestly there's nothing more frustratingly futile than trying to move into an NC base as a MAX.
Can't lose with AA MAX + phoenix for early xp.
Though I've chosen to go with SA for now because I got sick of getting stuck in indoor standoffs. I also have a large amount of grief to show for it. I swear you don't realize how dumb people are until you try to use SA.
Yeah, SA is usually a temporary thing for me. Then I have to let my grief level drop before using it again.
Why do people think it's a good idea to just rush into camped gens one by one? All you're doing is getting yourself killed. And on top fo that to do it when there's someone lobbing 'nades in to soften them up?....ugh
And my rollercoaster return to PS has come to an end as I uninstalled last night.
Final straw: Playing a TR alt with HA/rexo, bored with a footzerg base standoff so I start to logout behind a boulder outside their base. Out of the corner of my vision I see an enemy ATV come to a crashing halt into the boulder next to me. I pull out my MCG, spin around and start firing. But somehow CSHD decided that he dismounted and aug-stabbed me twice before my MCG at point blank range unloading killed him.
Right.
PS memories live on, but the PS present really didn't do it for me.
