You're doing it wrong. Don't join the server as if you would in order to play. Instead, find "Penny Arcade TF2 TV" in the spectate tab of the server browser.
I did do this and it still made me pick a team.

I didn't think I was too wasted but every time i looked at my score I was like "I don't remember getting any of those kills." I was playing sniper pretty well, somehow.
until I went back to our spawn on dustbowl 3 since asiina was sapping our teleporters. I found her then we spent about 10 minutes exchanging "the snipah is a spy". Then she'd keep running up to me while I was sniping yelling "the snoipa is a spy" until one of the team mates killed her. it's not really that funny but i couldn't stop laughing.
That's the tough bit, aiming. I don't have much difficulty pegging the hell out of people with my shotgun at Pyro speed, but the Scout just sends me straight to hell.
Of course, that might have to do with having played Scout for a grand total of two hours. Or so.
And scout vs. another scout = battle for 5 minutes with no damage then a soldier comes and blows you the hell up. Stupid crazy jumpers.
See that's why I love being a heavy. If you've got a good medic and/or a good team behind you, you can slaughter virtually anything.
Tonight I tried my hand at being a scout and managed to deal a surprising amount of damage to the enemy team while defending on gravelpit. This must be how Tiny Lobster feels all the time.
I'm pretty sure the highlight of tonight's lag filled (at least for me!) gaming was when my backspace key stopped working and I subjected you all to the most cryptic, unintelligible chat messages ever.

Anyways, there's a stupid bug in TF2 with the SourceTV stuff. If when you try to join and it asks you to pick a team, hit escape, disconnect, go to the console (usually the tilde/accent grave key) and type "connect tf2.finalmeasure.org:27020".

Does anyone here know why, after having no such problems for 4-5 months, suddenly I cannot join a server for longer than 5 minutes before being kicked by a "Invalid SteamID ticket" error.

Massive amount of gay. Just need to tone it down and it'll let you stay.
yesterday on redstone we had almost an entire team of heavy/medics. we capped the middle point and then our cadre of 4 or so heavy/meds followed him while he presumably lead the way. Then they started recapping the mid point. and still duld kept walking and we kept following. after several minutes marty comes on the mic and is like "uh we have to recap the mid point" and duldonkulus & co start to turn around.
dude didn't know the map at all but had the balls to walk around like he did.

Oh god I loved that match. It was non-stop healing. Not just sitting there on an overhealed heavy, actually healing a damaged one... and we somehow managed to have the perfect number of medics so that while they rarely hit max overheal, they didn't die often. Also a large part of that was they all knew when to back the hell off and let me heal them, rather than keep shooting their guns. Heavies.

Then again, I've been on mushrooms all night as well, so I lost interest quick once that gave me trouble.
