Heroes of Might and Magic is a series of turn based strategy games designed by New World Computing and published by 3DO.
It is freaking sweet and I am tired of stomping the shit out of the computer. Does anyone want to play some heroes over the internet?
I created a Hamachi network titled "PAHOMM" with a password of "wang". I'd be up for playing any heroes game, the ones I own are 1, 2 (plus price of loyalty), 3 (with shadow of death and armageddons blade), 4 (vanilla) and 5 (vanilla). I have no idea if Hamachi will work for the older games or not, but it is probably our best bet.
I've never played any of these, but I noticed that GameTap has 1-4. Any suggestions on where to start?
3 is generally considered the best, with 4 being the worst, though of course the first two will feel dated next to 3. 5 is also very good, and generally refered to as 'almost as good as 3.'
I'd probably go for 5, if you can find it at a good price.
I don't know, everyone hates HoMMIV, but it's somehow my favorite HoMM, followed closely by HoMMV.
That probably makes me a terrible person.
Regardless, I've never played the HoMM games in multiplayer but I've heard the games can last a very, very long time so I'm not quite sure if I'm up for it.
I love even more, how that game just oozes charisma. Who could make playing the undead so fun? In fact the only unispiring town type is the overlord or underlord or what ever. The ones that get Harpies. It just isn't as cool as all the other ones.
Fortress is a pretty good army, I think. Gnoll Captains are the best tier one unit and the special abilities of the basilisks can disable mid level unit stacks while the gorgon (and its death stare) cuts tier 7 units down to size.
On the gametap front: I'd recommend playing 2, then three. 4 has a lot of neat features (heroes that fight, caravans, sea border guards) but I got it at release and it was VERY incomplete. I have no idea how it is now.
So, this thread made me want to play some HoMM again and since IV is my favorite, and the only copy I have on-hand is the copy you get with the HoMMV limited edition, I installed that. I don't think this has anything to do with where the copy came from, but probably has more to do with Vista.
Anyway, any time I try to run it, I get a blue screen of death and my computer restarts. Fun.
so this thread has made me nostaligc for HoMM 2 again (first PC game I ever bought) and it works in XP without having to go through any compatability mode but for some reason I get errors trying to run music off the cd and it makes me play the shitty MIDI music. anyone know any fixes for that? Also I have am having a hell of a time trying to find patches for this game. every fucking site known to man only has them for 3-5
heroes 4 was an abomination. 1 was awesome, 2 was amazing, 3 built on 2 but hit an apex of complexity of units and factions, so I think in everyones hearts they knew 4 would become what it did. 5 was really fun from what I played of it.
I dont think I have ever finished a campaign in any of the games, always just set it on a really huge maps with 4 ais and skirmished till I won. I attempted some of the campaigns and they were awesome though.
The day I found the original heroes of M&M in best buy for the game boy color, oh man that was fucking bought! I still have it.
I remember their definition of hard AI was it was only going to fight you if it had a 95% chance to kill you, so you knew if it started to come after you, you were in trouble, haha. I think 2 is the only game I bought the strategy guide for, and it was pretty amazing with the amount of stats it had.
I don't think HOMM 2 and 3 will work over the newest Hamachi, or at least I didn't get them to work. Version 1.0.1.1 seemed to fix that, however (it has proper IPX support apparently).

3 is still definitely by far the best.
Though 1 still holds some good memories for me. Getting the demo with M&M6, my friends and I played that tiny stage who knows how many times.

*edit* even with the patch selecting CD music crashes the game

So I lost 3 back in the day, and ended up getting a free copy recently then.
Hmm. Well, still as fun as it was back then.
