The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I'm in on the Munchkin, if only to try it without having to play with my friends who take it far too seriously. Like, they wanted to write a "rules clarification" guide so that they could have clearly defined turn phases and card-precedence rules.
they wanted to write a "rules clarification" guide so that they could have clearly defined turn phases and card-precedence rules.
But... but... that's one of the best parts of Munchkin! Arguing over whether the card placement is valid/effective! The rules are vague for a reason, and in those limited rules they clearly state:
When the cards disagree with the rules, follow the cards. Any other disputes should be settled by loud arguments with the owner of the game having the last word.
Which I guess means your friend(being the owner) can have the last word and issue such a guide... but it's kind of against the spirit of the game. If you want a deterministic card game, go play Uno. Munchkin is all about interpretation, and it is awesome.
Ok I played alot of munchkin at PAX. All you have to do to get a game going is to walk into the freeplay game room and declare "Does anyone want to play munchkin?" and pick the first 5 people who say yes. Alot of people know how to play, and if they dont they will be interested and will play anyway. Dont worry about getting a game or not.

Thank you very much! This is great advice, and I'll definitely do that at PAX.

Q: "You are in the garden. You see a rose bush. You have a fishing rod. Exits are North, South and IN."
A: "What do you want from me?!?!?"
I'll happily play Munchkin to the degree I'd play any game, but I tend to find that Munchkin is overlong and unbalanced and usually turns into a chore before the game concludes. I'll be bringing a San Juan and a Race for the Galaxy deck for some alternatives that I'm sure nobody has never heard of because lets be honest the one note D&D joke goes a long fucking way in the nerdosphere.
Damn I should split that last sentence up to make it comprehensible.
And I'm all for drunken A to A in a hotel room one night
This line made me think of the last scene in Requiem for a Dream... I need to get my head out of the gutter.
That said though, I'd be down for both Munchkin and Apples to Apples, drunk or sober. Also: fluxx. I picked up the zombie version a few weeks ago but I'm yet to find a group to play it with.

I'll admit: I had never heard of this game before lurking here waiting for the forum registration to be fixed. That said, I am now completely obsessed with the idea of it and am trying to convince my Saturday gaming friends to let us put Arkham Horror on hold so I can try Munchkin out sometime.
I'm all in for games at PAX whether I get to play before then or not.

To me, Munchkin's a fun game when you've got nothing else to do... but there's probably others who like it much more than I do.

Apples to Apples is loads of fun, helps to be inebriated though.
Yeah, waaay too seriously.

Also, The Great Dalmuti is very fun.
