It is a terrible game. Do not buy it.

    Oh okay.

Or, as someone who's never played it, tell me what's so bad about it? I've heard numerous glowing reports, and just to go "it's terrible!" doesn't really help.

edit: since we're discussing multiplayer options, can someone tell me about Lego Star Wars? It's one I'm considering getting, but in one description on play.com they said about online co-op, but didn't mention local. It'd be stupid to leave that out, but can someone confirm that it does have at least 2-player local co-op?

Im on the EDF train but im not a fanatic. I do think its a great game, but it doesnt push any amazing boundies... its just a campy "REMEMBER YOUR TRAINING AND KEEP SHOOTING!" game that excells because it either knows exactly (Or doesnt but, is perfectly consistant regarding) what it wants to be.

It does require strategy and planning, and you will most likely keep playing after you beat it.

Most people will agree EDF 2017 is technically pretty terrible. Detractors say "The game is terrible, not worth your time." The fans say "A game this terrible has no right to be this much fun." It's kind of the gaming equivalent of Starship Troopers. It's pretty cheap nowadays so I always recommend it, but it also makes an excellent rental. I got it from GameFly out of curiosity and decided to keep it the next day because it was so fun. If you like local co-op it's even better.

On the contrary, I played it for a total of about two hours, both alone and with a friend, and will never play it again. The graphics suck. The sound sucks. The voice acting is awful, laughably bad. There is little variation in enemies. The framerate is inexplicably unsteady. Overall it looks like an xbox 1 game, with the exception of the ants which look and behave as if they were originally designed for something on the PS1.

I went out and traded at Gamestation, and managed to snag Dead Rising, Mass Effect and Marvel Ultimate Alliance for a grand total of £5 after trade-ins.

A pretty good deal, I feel.

Please do continue recommending games though; it's not as if I'm going to stop buying new games or anything. ;)

I basically agree on all these points and love it for the same reasons. I guess it comes down to what you expect from a game, and how you limit your fun-o-meter.

I don't think it's accurate to say that I limit my fun meter. Obviously I didn't spend 17.99 on the game wanting to not have fun. I tried to like it but cannot.

Besides, there are so many better games on the 360, as evident in this tread. The three games that the OP ended up with (all of which I own as well) are all far superior to EDF.

Drop $50 worth of MS Points on the XBLA. Download all the games, play them, if you like it, buy it. Omega Five, Puzzle Quest, Castlevania: SotN, Rez, etc. I find myself playing these $10 games more than $50 ones.

Good recommendation, but $50 just isn't going to cut it. :D

For shmups alone, you can easily spend $85 on quality games

    Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved $5
    Heavy Weapon
    Mutant Storm 1&2
    Omega Five
    Triggerheart Exelica
Assault Heroes $5 starting this Wednesday
    Heavy Weapon
    Space Giraffe $5
    Ikaruga (when it comes out)

And that's just one genre. Best of all, all of the XBLA games have demos so you can try before you buy and figure out which ones are for you and which ones are not.

EDIT: The best XBLA games IMO are Pac-Man: Championship Edition, Castlevania:SotN, GripShift, Lumines Live, Heavy Weapon, Omega Five, N+, Triggerheart Exelica, Bomberman Live, and Poker Smash.

There is seriously not enough love for Rainbow Six: Vegas in this thread.

I liked Vegas when it came out but online went down hill for me fast. And single player (what I focus on in most games) was okay but not great.

Well, there's the difference then. I think it's one of the best single player experiences on the 360.

The single player was fun. The ending? Well it wasn't really an ending so much as we are out of time so let's stop here and finish it with volume 2. Still I will be picking up the second one... I enjoyed it a lot.

As always in these threads I will recommend The Darkness. It can be had on the cheap now and is one of the best games I have ever played.

    My two cents:

Assassin's Creed (It's awesome. Find as many reviews as you can, as some of them were bad. Find Gabe's if you can -- rent first?)
Rainbow Six: Vegas (I love the first one. Since it's a budget title, you should probably play through it at some point)
    CoD4 (OMGAWESOME)
Rez HD (Only 1p, but every game recommendation thread should have it)
    Aegis Wing (Free. 4P)
skate. (I played the demo. not sure about the multiplayer if any in the full version, but holy shit was that fun)
    Crackdown (do it)
    TMNT Arcade (do it)

Stuff to look forward to on XBLA:
    Bionic Commando rearmed
    1942
    Ikaruga

I realize this doesn't fall into a split-screen or online multiplayer category but since it hasn't been mentioned and assuming you don't have this on PC:

    Bioshock.

Also, whoever suggested Blood Money: even though this doesn't fall under the multiplayer category either, I agree. I got it for cheap and it is a very fun Hitman game.

EDF is campy and cheap and trashy and shit in the same way that Red Dwarf was campy and cheap and trashy and shit.

I, personally, loved Red Dwarf, and EDF is some of the most mindless, dumb, enjoyable fun I've had gaming in ages. Maybe I've played too many massive-budget, serious games lately, but damn, EDF has not left my 360 since I bought it. I'm at 38 hours now FFS!! (And I bought it for just £15). Easy as pie when you start out, as the game progresses and you get more awesome shit, you will die so hard! But it is always enjoyable - you know when you go back to that uber-difficult level later on with a friend (or upgraded health/weapons) you will crush it!

Lego Star Wars; I have the "Complete Saga" for 360, I've also heard the different versions all have different online/offline functionality. I can tell you that the "Complete Saga" works co-op on the 360 both online and offline, and it is a great game (I got it in-store from Gameplay for £25) really good fun on a Friday night, does not require any real concentration, but the gameplay is enjoyable and varied enough to make it a worthwhile romp which will last many evenings.

Um, because Rez is so mind numbingly good that to consider it a mere game is a misnomer? It's an incredible experience, more than an incredible game.

Yeah, I forgot to mention it. My bad.

My list could be better described as the XBLA games I've spent the most time with. Rez HD, incredible though it is, is also really short and not really the kind of game that I want to leaderboard battle with.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention Puzzle Quest. Great game. Although some of the other puzzle games on XBLA have better puzzle gameplay, the addition of RPG elements add greatly to its fun and addictiveness.

Could've also used "I didn't bother listing Rez because it's just taken for granted that anyone who wants to see their next birthday will buy it".

And Frag, cool, sounds like Lego Star Wars will be one for me to get. Always looking out for an entertaining co-op game to blast through with my brother.
Also EDF does sound like something I'd enjoy pratting about with, so I'll look out for that.
