I also got a real guitar. It is not much like a fake guitar, which I found not at all surprising. I went to pick up some sheet music for it, and found... a licensed book of Rockband songs. It was comparatively expensive and only has about 2 dozen songs, but I couldn't resist. I felt like such a dork buying it, too.
I can play the bass intro to Are You Gonna Be My Girl now, though, and pretty decently. I was amused by the fact that GG&HT is, like, 25 pages long.
Congrats! What guitar did you get?
...Also...where did you find the book?
Edit: Great DLC this week. MiaB and Simple Man for me, not a blondie fan.

It's a Fender Starcaster. (No, not an actual Strat. ) It's part of a novice package that comes with the amp, tuner, picks, and everything else you need. Not a bad deal for $200, and the guitar looks just like a Strat. Except the tuner doesn't know what the fuck a D is supposed to sound like apparently, so I spent a day or so wondering why my guitar sounded like shit. On the upside, it forced me to learn to tune by ear.
...Also...where did you find the book?
It was at Guitar Center. $25. They also had a Guitar Hero one that had about 50 songs from GH1&2 for $30. It was a better deal, but I like the RB songs better.
This compared with a book of about 50 80's songs for $16. Not exactly a great deal, but... RB.

When you're playing offline, say you only have three people, are you able to choose any combination of the 4 spots to fill? Or are you forced to always have a singer, for example? (Let's say none of us wanna sing, can we just have the lead/bass guitars and a drummer?)
Then online, I'm assuming that always requires 4 people, right?
Assuming you're just doing Band Quickplay mode, you can play with any combination of players on any parts. You're not required to have any part filled.
For Band World Tour, whoever creates the band is designated the "leader" and that part must always be present.
Playing online is the same as offline Band Quickplay. Any number of players, any combination of parts.

Ok so that was more than a question.
Offline you can have any combination imaginable, like just bassist and drummer if you prefer. However, keep in a mind that applies best for band quickplay. For Band World Tour, a player/character is designated the leader, and that band leader must always be present to use that band. As a character is locked to their instrument, that means whatever instrument you pick to be band leader is the instrument you always have to have for that band.
Online, you can have any combination, not necessarily all four. You just need at least 2 people.
Edit: Beat, jesus christ you guys are fast on the draw. Do I win for completeness?
Nice week for DLC. Now they better release Cowboys from Hell at some point.
I would rather see Cemetery Gates, but any Pantera would be awesome.
I probably would rather see it too, but it's more likely that we'll get Cowboys sooner if Message is any indication of HMX pulling into old GH game tracks more frequently.

Ah yes, I've seen Starcaster bundles before. Hope you enjoy it. As for the tuner, try looking up Guitar tuners on google. You'll find some virtual ones that play tones for each of the strings (I use this one:http://www.gieson.com/Library/projects/utilities/tuner/). This will help you learn to tune by ear and you won't have to deal with your wonky one.
Also, you wouldn't want 50 80's songs if you looked at each of them individually :-P

If that were the case, Message in a Bottle would have been in the Police Pack at launch.

Everybody answered the question quickly and accurately, but nobody mentioned that whatever instrument used to sign in with is what appears available in the band. As in if you use a controller to sign in, you won't be able to be anything but the singer. The guitar can choose between bass and lead but is the only instrument that isn't strictly locked in.

They already had Synchronicity II which was in Rock the 80s.

Hell fuckin' yes to Message in a Bottle. I've found all of the Police songs (haven't gotten Truth Hits Everyone yet, though) completely stellar to play, plus they're always one of the first picks at Rock Band parties. Instabuy, plus my wife will enjoy the Blondie song, so I might just go ahead and buy the pack next week.
Woot. Broke 4 million for Vocals career now, been going through songs on Hard and improving my scores on them. Still stuck on Should I Stay or Should I Go on Expert though.
if I wanted to play with some of you cool dudes, does it matter what difficulty I play on?
We'd rather you play at a difficulty you can play the song competently at rather than having you attempt expert and then fail out three times in the first minute of the song.
Like I said earlier, not everyone is always in the mood play guitar/drums or sing. Make multiple bands with different themes. We have a hippy/protest band whenever we want a laugh.

yes but the thing is you can only make progress in one band at a time, so you end up repeating the same songs even more than usual.
But you know, if you buy ALL of the DLC and have nearly 140 songs, songs don't actually repeat that often.
Although sometimes you have to play Thrasher. X__X

Some friends and I completed a full band endless setlist.
It was one of, if not the, greatest moments in my gaming life.
Unfortunately, I only brought my Profile to my friend's house; thus I got the achievements, but my main drummer is left out of a cool platinum icon.
I guess I'll just have to do it again sometime.
Hrm...GH3 is getting Def Leppard DLC. Obligatory olol-notecharts.
I died a little inside when "Hysteria" was announced to be Muse... I know a lot of people are happy for it, but its just a band that isn't for me.
I'm trying to play through an Expert Guitar career, and "Electric Version" is kicking my ass pretty hard. I'm pretty sure once I get past it I'll be okay until "Run to the Hills" and "Green Grass and High Tides" but that ONE SONG is just kind of roadblocking me...
Fuck...I've taken to trying to get the achievements for ranked score duel and tug of war, but the rampant quitting is so damn frustrating.
It's gotten to the point where I now closely watch the score and intentionally keep it down to an ever so slight margin just to keep them from quitting. It's ridiculous.
However, at least one guy was doing it to me, too...I had four straight wins and was going for the fifth when what else comes on but Green Grass and High Tides. He totally blew at the first solo and all the non-solo parts, but got 100% on the second solo and kicked my ass.
Also, someone came to the door when I was in the middle of losing, and I couldn't do anything but yell, "Hold on! ...can't quit! ...can't be...one of them!"

I'd play with you, but I've just been getting that bass part down for real getting pumped for this game, so...
Ah fuck it, I'll play whatever

This is why my sister and I have like 4 bands whenever we wanna switch up.

my friends are already angry at me every time we do randoms and a Metallica song comes up.
I'm like YES THIS WILL BE AWESOME and they're like NO IT'S HARD AND IT'S TEN MINUTES LONG
everyone knows the best moments in rock band are where you almost fail but manage to pull through.
Also, Rock Band irl?
All three tracks fucking rule this week.
I don't
Blondie's fine and all, but I really wanted to get my Paul Rodgers on.

Better GH3 than Rock Band because I don't see how one armed drum notecharts would work.
