I agree with you slash000, I will buy this day one if the price isnt ridiculous. I think this is actually pretty ingenious...I mean, how else could they do this...its better than what I expected, thats for sure. Bring on the summer release so we can see if it delivers.:^:
Wow. You can really tell that the spirit of Guitar Hero has left with Harmonix. This looks to be a terrible step for the series. Oh, it may sell well but as far as the goal of Harmonix in making a music game this is just off. This doesn't even have the cheese factor of the air guitar peripheral. I thought that thing was cringe inducing but playing an air guitar still has some semblance of a guitar. This is just... too weird.
Also, I guess I don't even see the point. If this is your only option for a guitar based rhythm game then yeah go at it but if you've got other options? Why bother? Now if they could do Harmonica Hero with the DS as an add-on to Guitar Hero: Bob Dylan? I'm buying the hell out of that.
Considering I play my DS on the bus and that looks fucking ridiculous, I'm going to have to pass.
Doesn't playing video games on a bus at all look ridiculous?
I've never understood the "looking ridiculous" stuff about video games before. Whether in public or private, are people this self conscious? I can't imagine the horror my life would be if I had to examine every behavior and every minute detail of my appearance before I went out for the day.
I think looking ridiculous would be a selling point of the game, considering how ubiquitous Guitar Hero is at this point. If a dude was wailing on his DS Guitar Hero style in the middle of a mall, having a blast, I'd bet he'll sell a few copies whether he intends to or not.
Isn't part of the point of GH and RB using the Fisher Price peripherals? It's why you don't play with the controller. I have never, EVER once wished, "You know, this not doing anything at work except surfing the web is ok, but you know what I really want to do? Announce to the office the fact that a) I'm not working, b) I'm the hugest dork in the world and c) show that I'm a massive cock, playing this DS like this. I mean, seriously look at me. The only way I could be any lamer is if I feathered my hair, strapped my GH guitar to my back and put little flash pots at my desk. Seriously, I'm a fucking loser for playing this." GH and RB belong at home (and friend's houses and the quad or whatever the kids these days call it) for a reason and this just looks retarded. But, you know, that's just me.
I love RB and used to love GH, but this...Jesus, it almost makes me hate what these games have wrought. I mean, just the commercial terrorizes me! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJdU0f8STN0
More fun than than Guitar Hero on home consoles though?
Who says it has to be?
Well it certainly doesn't have to be more fun but I'd like to think that there would be more reason for it to exist than to be just a second rate Guitar Hero. I'm not really sure why I'm being vocal about this particular thing. I love the DS and I love what Guitar Hero and Rock Band mean to gaming. This to me though is just cashing in. I'm sure there were many sleepless nights for game designers and engineers with much more talent than I to come up with this little peripheral but it just doesn't feel like Guitar Hero. If it were a new IP, Finger Cramper perhaps, Trumpet Savior, Douche Exposer, then I would be more apt to think it was a neat peripheral. It's just that the whole contraption isn't guitar-y enough.
I expect that most of us here are real guitar players on some level and the fun in playing Guitar Hero is when you feel like you're playing the guitar. On top of that I think that those of us that drum have more fun playing the drums in Rock Band on Expert when it's closer to the actual experience of playing the real drums. This peripheral is a step backwards is all.
Actually with the mic it could be a trumpet simulator or plenty of other wind instrument simulator. Not that I would buy that either because wind instruments blow. (snare, snare, tom, cymbal) : P
I totally agree and I'm sure there are guitar players and non-guitar players on both sides. I wonder what the difference is if there is a single underlying thing.
Gems on that list include:
- Jet Grind Radio (GBA)
- Guitar Hero 3 (Wii)
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Wii)
- Every terrible Crash Bandicoot game ever.
- Spider-Man 3
- That's So Raven
It goes on.

I just tried holding my DS in the method required for this (I have the old fat one though), and it actually isn't that bad at all. The down side of this is the four strings, possibly battery life, and possible lack of music. The control setup for this, in theory, seems just fine. Four fingers on the "bottom" of the DS by the GBA port, and your thumb supports up by the R shoulder button.
Very fucking creative of them. I didn't even think of this being possible or not, and I guess it is. Kudos.
As I sit here and study/forum my eyes run over the topic title and see, "Guitar Hero DS reviled"
But... the peripheral itself is interesting. If the DS had buttons there normally I wonder what could have been done with an open-book title like Ninja Gaiden DS
The game's battle mode will feature similar gameplay as the mode created in Guitar Hero III, with power-ups created specifically for Guitar Hero: On Tour. For example, players can activate power-ups that'll send raving fans to the other screen, and the opponent will have to sign autographs on the touchscreen to get rid of them. Or out-of-control pyrotechnics will be set ablaze, and players will have to blow them out using the Nintendo DS microphone.
Oh, Activision. Why do you have to ruin a good series? It's gimmicky bullshit like this that has taken away whatever trust I used to have in you.
Harmonix started making games because, and I quote: they wanted "to create new ways for non-musicians to experience the unique joy that comes from making music." That's exactly what all of Harmonix's games have been about. It's just you, or occasionally you and your friends, and the music.
But no, Activision, you had to have "legends of rock," and boss battles, and now HAHA YOUR SHIT IS ON FIRE, YOU HAVE TO BLOW IT OUT.
Not only that, but it's another stupid, superfluous use of the DS microphone, which has always bugged me.
Yeah the mic use seems pretty stupid, but then I don't think I've ever run across a game where I enjoy yelling at/blowing on my screen. Okay, maybe Phoenix Wright, but that's it!
*snip*
I think this image needs to be added to the OP, a lot of people seem to be having misconceptions as to how you hold it...
That's precisely how I imagined it to be.
But it's just so... unguitar-like. Because of the way the screens are set up your strumming hand is in front of your face. I mean, this isn't just a, "I would never play this because I would look like a douche"-thing. The movement of your right hand, the action of strumming is just not like a guitar. How do you Pete Townsend-windmill this thing?
My first thought was imagining how the peripheral could be used by homebrew developers (I've got homebrew on the mind while waiting for my flash cart to come in the mail) but then I realized it's just four buttons. And the DS already has 4 perfectly functional buttons on its face. I hope somebody comes up with some other reason to have access to 4 button combinations and touch screen access, because I can't think of any.
And stop telling users to blow into the DS mic! That is not a wind sensor, it is a microphone. It should be used almost exclusively to enable voice chat in online games, with the occasional "OBJECTION!" now and again.
I probably wouldn't have gotten this anyway, since I get enough Guitar Hero on consoles already. The mic thing pretty much confirms it though. I have never bought, and I doubt I will ever buy, a game that requires me to blow on my DS.

Wtf? Have you ever played the first Phoenix Wright or Apollo Justice? The blowing feature is awesome in it. But I do agree this game is a joke in any way shape and form, but not for that reason.

Mario Kart DS uses the mic, it's stupid so you ignore it, and the rest of hte game is awesome.
My response, had Harmonix pitched it, would be the exact. Same. FUCKING. Thing. I really, really hate this idea. It makes me hang my head in shame and I play with plastic guitars and drums all the time.
I'm curious (Since we'll never know) as to what the reception to this idea would have been, if Harmonix had pitched it rather then Activision.
I just sense a whole lot of "They are a huge company, so they are ruining my game" in this thread.
I don't think it's a love of Harmonix for most of us. I mean if EA came out with Rock Band then I would have bought the hell out of that. I just don't think that Harmonix would even pitch this title. In the few interviews and behind the scenes banter that I've seen with Harmonix, they would never make this game. At least not after making Guitar Hero. This is a step backwards from what their goals are and what they've accomplished already. I mean they want as close as possible to simulate playing the real instruments and this poor excuse for a guitar isn't it. I can see other uses for this peripheral but rocking out isn't it.
I'll say it again. This is really close to Harmonica Hero which would not be a bad idea if done correctly. I'm talking some Wii connectivity with Guitar Hero: Dylan

Here's my thing though. The mic thing may be the best thing about this abomination of a game.
Note: I am getting more dramatic so please no poking holes in my decreasing logic.
Well it certainly doesn't have to be more fun but I'd like to think that there would be more reason for it to exist than to be just a second rate Guitar Hero.
There is. It's portable.
I expect that most of us here are real guitar players on some level...
O_o
I'm finding some of the more over-the-top reactions to this game hilarious. ZOMG, a scaled-down version of a console game on a portable system!? What a world!

Dude, EA did do Rock Band (publish it at least). But yeah, Harmonix would not even consider making this game. I'd rather see Amplitude or Frequency go to the DS.

Yeah, but my point is that this game loses all the "guitaryness" in going to the DS. Scaled down is going from the PS3 version of Rock Band to the PS2. Scaled down is going from the PS2 version of GTA3 to the PSP version. I feel like this is shoe horning a game onto the portable and losing all the soul.
Also, I'm not really sure what you took from that second quote you took from me. I just meant to say that alot of the people in this world have played a real guitar at one time or another so they have some feeling as to how a real guitar plays. Even someone who air guitars to their favorite song in the darkness of their bedrooms is getting the mechanic of strumming down closer than this peripheral will.

oops. my bad. yeah, I just meant to put some big faceless corporation name in there and put EA. :P But yeah, I think that proves our point more then. It didn't matter that Activision or Harmonix or EA or my mother came out with this idea. I'd still stand against it.
EDIT: Oh, and I'm even defending EA in the other EA thread at the moment.
I cannot begin to imagine playing Guitar Hero in that kind of setup, especially if Neversoft ("This notechart needs to be HARDER!!") is involved. I can't see the touch-screen being the most responsive strum mechanism, I would think the frets would be awkward to push with both a handheld strapped around your hand and the other hand strumming right next to it, and I don't think the DS's speakers, while decently loud, will give me the same satisfaction as louder TV speakers and surround sound.

It's not like it came out of left field. They've been planning this since before GH3 came out.
