Well it certainly doesn't have to be more fun but I'd like to think that there would be more reason for it to exist than to be just a second rate Guitar Hero.
There is. It's portable.
I expect that most of us here are real guitar players on some level...
O_o
I'm finding some of the more over-the-top reactions to this game hilarious. ZOMG, a scaled-down version of a console game on a portable system!? What a world!
Yeah, but my point is that this game loses all the "guitaryness" in going to the DS.
Yes, but it still might be a fun rythem game.
I think I buy a few video games because something about them is neat... I'll probably end up with this.

Well, it's not the worst idea. It's just close. REAL close. Flautist Hero is better and Vomit Hero is worse. But I will give an inch. I loved Ouendan. If I think of this as a non-Japanese version with American songs, possibly some Bowie, then it could be fun... wait.
Also, I'm not saying this won't sell a multiple millions of copies along with multiple hundreds of thousands of new DSs. So no throwing that in my face if it happens! : )

So yes, everyone should at least not accuse Activision of rehashing ideas. But this idea would have done better had it not ever existed.

That is awesome. That's the Jaguar controller right? It would have been a little forgivable if it was the second controller ever devised but yeah.

though i see they have a whole contraption that seems to prevent that from happening. still, the way to strum is to strum on the touch screen, and I know how imperfect it can be sometimes.
first of all the 'blow on the guitar' thing is most likely only used in the battle mode (it's really no worse than the broken sting or whammy bar attacks in gh3), so you're not going to be doing it on the bus.
second of all the peripheral looks pretty neat. If they get the touch screen strumming right this could turn out good.
Gems on that list include:
- Jet Grind Radio (GBA)
- Guitar Hero 3 (Wii)
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Wii)
- Every terrible Crash Bandicoot game ever.
- Spider-Man 3

I'll wait and see the songlist before buying. Though, I'll probably still buy it. I'm a whore.
I don't understand the hate. While it is a huge cash-in and possibly unnecessary, I think it could actually work. You people who say it won't be hard because of a lack of frets seem to have never heard of a little game called Guitar Freaks. It only had three buttons, but the difficulty wasn't in the moving the hand and all that, it was the fucking WAILING all over that every song had. So, while some might see that as lame, difficulty will not be an issue.
Next, I guess it's cool to hate on GH now because Rock Band is awesome. However, this game still has a chance to be good, as long as they get the strumming right.
VV have done every portable Tony Hawk since 2. And all of them are pretty okay.
This, though, I wonder why the note track screen isn't 90 degrees clockwise. Hold the DS upside down and then your fingers actually correspond to shit visually as well.

The whole point of the Guitar Hero games is that it kinda, sorta, barely approximates what it feels like to play a guitar. And that's mainly because you're holding a controller that's shaped like a guitar.
But this is just four buttons on a strip of plastic. It's nothing like a guitar at all. This shouldn't even be called Guitar Hero. It's just colors scrolling down a screen, and you press buttons that correspond. Ugh.
And why couldn't they add a fifth button? It would go....right next to the fourth one. I don't get it. What makes hard and expert modes difficult is that you've got five buttons, but only four fingers. Why is this limited to only four buttons then?
This game makes me cringe. It should be called "Guitar Hero: Because We Could."

Thank you. My sentiments exactly. It just goes against playing a guitar so much that it's insulting. It may end up being a fun game but it's not "Guitar" Hero. The strumming is just... off. Think about how you would be holding a guitar in order to be strumming in front of your face, palm facing away, with your left hand behind your right.
When Ohio says barely that may be a little underrated. When I strum I do it exactly like I would on a real guitar with slight adjustments, you know... because there aren't any strings. : )
Actually, I've mentioned this earlier in the thread but haven't been able to gauge an answer yet so I'll ask again.
There is such a wide separation between people who think this game is a good idea and think it's a bad idea. It really seems like a polarizing idea for some reason. Any ideas as to why? I think it would be easy to just assume that real guitar players hate it and non-guitar players love it but I'm pretty sure there are both on both sides. So any ideas? : P
I am not a real guitar player, but I did take lessons for about 8 months and I understand the basics. Which is why I say it barely approximates a real guitar because really, it's nothing like it. The strumming yeah maybe, but otherwise no.
I have Guitar Hero 2 and 3. I have Rock Band. I don't regret purchasing any of them. They're fun to play with a big TV, a good sound system, and in the case of Rock Band, other people in the same room rocking with you. Half my pleasure from those games comes from turning it up loud and basically pretending that I'm playing those songs. That's why holding that plastic guitar is supposed to make you do: feel like you're actually doing it. That's the whole point of the game.
What's the whole point of this game? To make you feel like you're playing a guitar? How could the developers even claim that?
This DS game and its lame controller are not going to capture any of that feeling. And it's surely not going to capture a rocking sound. Not even close.

Because of histrionics like that. Also because of a bunch of really silly posts complaining that you'll look "stupid" playing GHDS, as if strumming away on a giant chunk of plastic makes you look like Joe freaking Strummer.
Seriously, it's a scaled-down version of a console game. It's not that big a deal.

Well I hate to admit that there is some strong feelings on an item that I have no intention of buying but there is! : P The more I think about it I think the reason I'm defensive about GHDS is because I used to be a guitar instructor during my undergrad days. You could at least make the argument that you could learn strumming timing and form and possibly finger speed with the GH guitars. Also, this item goes in the opposite direction of the drum kit in rock band which is a step in more closely approximating the real instrument. There's an interesting review of the Rock Band / Guitar Hero phenomenon by Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney) which more elegantly describes what I think is going on in this forum. I'd always thought that she was being a bit of a blow-hard (especially considering her sense of humor and fun) with Rock Band but I can see her opinion a little bit more clearly now when applied to the DS version.
I mean when I play Rock Band with my friends, sure I'm having lots of fun and you can probably score higher with people that are musicians but the real magic of Rock Band, for me, is being able to share the experience of playing music with people that don't play real instruments. It's sort of the same reason that I started giving guitar lessons. Have I deluded myself into thinking that Rock Band might lead to more people playing real instruments? Yeah, and I think that's where the problem is. : P
So the issue here is that this is a Video Game, and not a Guitar Tutor system.....oh...
Well, I'm allright then, I don't need a guitar tutor system, but I love me some video games.
Yeah, I'll admit that it may be a fun game and I need to remember that.
Y"know it's funny that I love rhythm games. Loved Pa Rappa, Um Lammer (!), I imported Ouedan and those don't approximate the performance on screen AT ALL. I understand the hypocrisy in madly ranting about GHDS but it's such a gut feeling for some reason. Oh well. Time to go to therapy I suppose.
Has anyone complained about the fact that the notes coming down are only about half of the left screen? Why even bother with the background stuff when dealing with a screen that small? You will only be able to see the next quarter of a second of what's coming on the screen!
Upon viewing the commercial too, they didn't even show any of the harder songs, which makes me wonder how hard they could possibly get. And I love the fact it shows them all moving around and stuff wailing, but no one could see what was coming or reliably strum while doing that.

I remember reading that article by her and thinking half of her was full of herself, and the other half was just full of shit. I love Harmonix's philosophy of bringing the joy of music to non-musical gamers, but I hate hate hate the "it's not real music! Learn to play an instrument, losers!" attitude I've seen from some people (even on this very forum!) Once Activision got hold of the GH license, the Harmonix philosophy just doesn't apply to it anymore. It's not about bringing music to non-musical gamers - it's just another rhythm game.
This game shouldn't really be compared to Rock Band in any major way, other than that they are both rhythm games of a sort.
