The press release said that Nirvana, OK Go and No Doubt would be in it, but nothing more specific than that.

Not nearly so many people were "upset" by Jam Sessions, and that piece of software (I hesitate to call it a 'game,' because that is not its purpose) was meant to simulate guitar music by allowing you to set chords and strum virtual strings.

So why is it so much worse that there's a game, that is only trying to be a game? It's not trying to make you feel like a rock star. You're not supposed to look awesome playing it, and you hardly look like any less of a dork rocking out on a plastic Les Paul. It's dorky goofy fun.

At worst, GHDS is like Elite Beat Agents or Amplitude or Frequency or whatever. But with its own buttons.

Just the mere fact that it spawns from a console game that includes a plastic guitar generates this kind of hate?

People 1) Love Guitar Hero, and 2) Love the DS. I mean, I'd figure this would be a sure-fire hit around here. Is it really the silly attachment? Because I personally find it kind of endearing, despite the fact that I have no prior attachment to the series whatsoever. Or maybe, because of the fact that I have no prior attachments, I dunno.

Of course, I found that rotary dial attachment for the Arkanoid DS port to be cool too. The game itself is just decently amusing, but that rotary controller was an interesting idea.

I think recent events in the game industry as a whole have made people wary of things when they're not hands-on yet. It's been a weird gen.

Chances are this will generally be accepted as good when it is out.

To answer both of these comments: I think it boils down to what people like most about Guitar Hero as a franchise. Is it the process of hitting notes along to music, like DDR or Beatmania, or is rocking out with a plastic guitar? And in the case of the latter, does scribbling your right hand in the palm of your left feel like you're playing guitar? I can't answer that for myself yet, as I haven't tried it, but I'm skeptical.

Once you get past that hurdle, though, seasoned GH/RB vets are going to call into question the notecharts, which GH3 took a lot of flak for once the franchise changed hands.

Dammit, I was working on Guitar Hero DS as my 'bad games' photoshop thread entry.

    Beat'd by Activision.

So guitar hero is a scaled down imitation of playing a guitar.

This, then, is a scaled down imitation of playing guitar hero.

I'm staying out of the good/bad thing because I definitely over did things in here but I will defend Carrie to the death! (Even though she's wrong about Rock Band) C'mon SK get the band together! : )

Well, I will leave a parting shot. I think GHDS may be fun. There's that's pretty non-committal and an honest statement seeing as I haven't even held the controller. :)

This was probably already posted, but more details on GH:DS have been officially revealed:

    kotaku wrote:
Activision today officially announced Guitar Hero: On Tour for the DS, dropping a few more details about the portable rhythm game.

On Tour will use a pick-stylus and touch screen strings for strumming and that fancy Guitar Hero Guitar Grip for fretting. The game will include a local wireless co-op mode and a Guitar Duel battle mode with battle items unique to the DS. Some examples include forcing a player to blow into the microphone to put out pyrotechnics gone wrong and being forces to autograph the touch screen to stave off crazed fans in the middle of a set.

The game will have five new unlockable venues. You can customize the game a touch by changing the color of your guitar and picking outfits for your guitarist. The DS version will come with six characters, two of which are new to this version. The rated E 10+ game is due out this summer.

    Activision wrote:
Guitar Hero(R): On Tour Explodes onto Nintendo DS This Summer

New Game Introduces Revolutionary Guitar Hero(TM) Guitar Grip(TM) Peripheral for Anytime, Anywhere Guitar Hero(R) Gameplay

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Mar 20, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- For the first time, handheld gamers will have the freedom to unleash their inner rock star anywhere, anytime with Activision, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) upcoming Guitar Hero(R): On Tour for Nintendo DS(TM). The game will deliver a unique Guitar Hero(R) experience by challenging handheld gamers to rock out and prove their shredding skills on the most diverse set list of master tracks ever offered in a Guitar Hero game, including classic rock, alternative and pop favorites such as Nirvana, OK Go and No Doubt.
The game will be packaged with a revolutionary Guitar Hero(TM) Guitar Grip(TM) peripheral that fits snugly into the DS and a unique Guitar Hero pick-stylus that brings a new dimension to handheld gaming and the core gameplay that defines Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero: On Tour has been designed specifically for the DS platform and will offer the DS audience an all-new compelling music experience.

"We are continuing to introduce new and exciting ways to bring music to audiences with Guitar Hero," said Dusty Welch, head of publishing for Activision/RedOctane. "The Guitar Hero Guitar Grip redefines how games can be played on handheld systems and the integration of the microphone and touch screen gameplay on the DS, further illustrates Guitar Hero's leadership in delivering the most unique and creative quality hardware and software on the market."

"We're designing Guitar Hero: On Tour from the ground up to take full advantage of the DS platform by integrating signature gameplay with fresh new content and DS specific features," said Karthik Bala, CEO of Vicarious Visions. "We've taken all of our learnings on the DS platform to date and pushed it to the limits to create a truly innovative Guitar Hero experience."

Guitar Hero: On Tour continues to build on the franchise's signature easy-to-play, yet difficult to master addictive gameplay, and now lets players take their experience on the road wherever they go. Players use the Guitar Hero pick-stylus on the touch screen to strum their favorite tunes and create their rock 'n' roll legacy in career mode.

Fans can also join together to play co-op mode using a local wireless network, or battle each other in a Guitar Duel using new Battle Items unique to the DS platform. For example, players must blow into the microphone to extinguish a pyrotechnics effects gone wrong, or use the touch screen to autograph a crazed fan's shirt in the middle of their set.

Featuring five unlockable new venues, the game lets players personalize their experience by choosing the color of their axe of choice, selecting to play as one of six characters - two of which are all new and exclusive to Guitar Hero: On Tour - and outfitting their guitarist in numerous styles.

Five venues? Perhaps that translates into 5x5= 25 songs? Not too bad, but again, depends on song list and price.

2 new characters? Meh, whatever. They'll probably be retarded. But I'm only interested in the songs and price of the package.

The world needs more portable rhythm games.

But... this? I was skeptical about Taiko no Tatsujin DS, but this looks (at the risk of repeating someone earlier in the thread) more like "brass instrument" hero than anything. I guess it can work, but I've rarely seen portable rhythm games work at all besides the DJ games for PSP and the Ouendan/EBA games.

Y'know I think people thought I was attacking Guitar Hero or the peripheral itself. If this was Trumpet Hero I would think it was a pretty good fit.

'Guitar Hero: On Tour' priced for the UK

GAME.co.uk have started taking pre-orders for Guitar Hero: On Tour, on the DS.

It is priced at £44.99, making that around an extra £15 than typical DS releases. This extra cost covers the cost of the "Guitar Grip" add on, which goes in the DS's slot 2.

GAME are predicting a 1st of June release date, although they more than likely just pulled it out of their ass.
