"Analysts point to EA Chief Executive John Riccitiello's comments about Rockstar, recently published in the New York Times. In the interview, he asserted that Electronic Arts "represents a white knight" to Rockstar in many ways. The comment itself was made in the context that EA could offer Rockstar a stable company that can distribute GTA and other IPs to a broader audience, much like how its sports titles are embraced by all audiences."QJ.NET
Seeing this makes me think that EA is disrespectfuly insane.... I gave up on ordering burnout paradise after seing this..... I absolutely hate EA

I find it amusing they think they can broaden the market of GTA any more than it already is. The game is a household name, everyone knows it. There's nothing EA can do to improve the mindshare.
edit: as Kagera said, the only way to increase sales would be to tame it to the point that it appeals to the new mainstream soccermom gamers, but that would alienate the current market and basically make it not GTA.

what's your take on the whole Take 2 EA thing?
Yeah, I think that quote might be a little stronger than intended. I mean I thought all he was really saying was that EA as a corporate entity could repress the silly backlash that GTA encounters all the time. I don't think it was meant in an artistic role at all which would be a little insulting. Not that I don't think that will happen, mind you. I just don't think the president would outright and say, "Hey, we can't wait to get our hands on a multi-million dollar IP and soften it up to make it a multi-multi-million dollar IP." I think he was just using the mob approach and offering "protection"

EA Trax begs to differ. Challenge Everything. etc, etc.
No worries about Maddenizing the series either as its already almost there. If you include the PSP titles you have about one GTA game every 18 months or so.
EA will probably get its mitts on TT eventually. What I'm amazed at is that Microsoft hasn't tried it yet.
I think, for example, the torture and murder of Tibetan monks in 'disgusting' and 'disrespectfully insane'. I think that a company doing business and trying to make money for its stockholders is quite the opposite. You give them way to much credit.

Dude, just think about this.
Here's the pitch:
GTA: but without the drugs, swearing, violence or sex
Well leave the violence in and maybe some swearing.
Get it rated T for teens then sit back and watch the money roll in.
Also make the main character voice acted by John Madden.

"Boom! Tough actin' Tinactin!"
As to the thread topic itself, I'm not disgusted by EA's quote there, as there's nothing really wrong with it. However, engaging in a hostile takeover of a company which is founded on ideals of creativity is a little scary. I get the feeling they're going to fire all the developers and writers and destroy the brand loyalty Take Two has spent so long building up just so they can make a quick buck.
So much for the "New EA" that we were all touting about when they defended BioWare.

If EA ever got into a position of owning Take Two and the GTA IP they'd probably make really toned down, crappy offshoot games of the series. Or "spoof" games.
I pretty much agree with what's been said. Yeah, it isn't a far stretch for EA to say they could do that, and then again, what Captain Cactus And The Water Preservation Squad said (damn your title by the way) is equally true.
Edit - Why not have John Madden be the playable character, in his youth? And Pat can be his advisor who groans at everything he says.

I'd rather wait for those things to happen before making mean faces at EA. That's what their recent PR has earned from me.
Before I would just show my scorn whenever those two letters were in sequence such as EAt or mEAt or lEAp.

You speak as if what you wrote already happened. *hits Taramoor's wrists with a ruler*
They've already been turned down when they attempted to buy the company outright, so instead they made a very public offer to purchase Take Two stock for twice its current value provided they can purchase 51% or more.
They're not exactly being subtle. The "New EA" that was being PR'd would have offered to buy Take Two, sure, but if Take Two didn't want to be bought they wouldn't force it.
If there's one thing that gets me worked up, it's distribution.

If you think GTA will sell more if it has a T rating then you're an idiot. It feeds off the controversy that it produces and most parents are too apathetic to care about what they have buying for their kids.

They'd be insane to do that.
The people getting fired if EA buys Take Two are the *management*. The developers and the writers are what EA would be acquiring Take Two for - it would be idiocy* to fire them.
*I understand that we tend to expect idiocy from the megacorps, and for good reason, but even from a corporate mindset, getting rid of any of the creative teams makes zero sense.

EA is evil because it claims it can distribute GTA?
I never asked for this!
So what he said was factually accurate.
Hating EA because they speak the truth is a new one on me.
I think the idea he's getting at is that he thinks EA wants to 'domesticate' games like GTA to reach that broader audience.
edit: as Kagera said, the only way to increase sales would be to tame it to the point that it appeals to the new mainstream soccermom gamers, but that would alienate the current market and basically make it not GTA.
Everyone over the age of whatever though. EA to make clean censored version confirmed!
Replace the guns and murder with candy and sleepovers.
Yeah even my grandmother gets a kick out of GTA.. I mean wheres the limit?

And yet on the other hand, video games will no longer be a target of politics.
The day that video games aren't a target of politics in one way or another is the day that I'll eat my own wang.
Also I never really liked EA but that doesn't mean I won't stop buying games backed by them if I liked the game itself.
