Wake on LAN, possibly? I remember a couple of years ago my PC kept on starting up and it freaked me out for a few days..

I thought of this too, but as far as I know the 360 has no such feature. Unless it's an undocumented one from a dashboard update with no option to enable/disable?
As far as I remember, the 360 can wake up the PC it's 'connected' to with Media Centre, but yeah, I have no idea if it works the other way.

    Oh well. :o

The answer has already been posted, and it's the obvious answer. An answer that we should all have been considering from day one:

    Xbox Live is Skynet.

Impossible. It would've red-ringed and shut down before anyone got hurt.

It could be your keyboard's got a stuck Windows key (which acts as the Guide button on the 360), and that could be turning it on. Or any of the other things that people said.

Just make sure you set your auto-off setting to On and then if it turns itself on and goes unnoticed for six hours it'll turn itself off again. And maybe leaflet all the flats in the area 'Do you have a 360? Mine keeps turning itself on randomly. Let me know.'

That's a brilliant idea! Advertise that you have a 360 to all your neighbors! Make sure they know it's a SPECIAL 360 that turns ITSELF on!

my last neighbor stole a whole bunch of stuff from me, including game consoles
    TWICE
they arrested him after the second time, and I got a lot of stuff back
he probably didn't do any jail time, apart from the night when he was arrested

    1) Remove the battery pack from 360 controllers when not in use. Pressing the guide button turns the console on. Cats, dogs, babies, parents, can all accidentally press this button.

    2) Pray for mercy.

Now this is a coincidence because I bought a new Xbox 360 last week and it would occasionally power itself on. It actually got to the point where it wouldnt shut down.. oh you could try to turn it off but the XBOX new better and would just instantly power back on. Persistent bugger.

I ended up taking mine back and telling them I wanted an XBOX that wasnt possessed...

Fixed. My photoshopping skills are, alas, subpar. D:

Also, doesn't the 360 sometimes turn itself on for dashboard updates or some such?

You probably just have the 360 controller buried under some stuff, pressing the button. Happened to me a few times.

Or its become self-aware or some such nonsense.

Mine does this too, not really sure why. Stopped doing it a few weeks ago though. I think it might have something to do with some wireless stuff I've got in my apartment.

    This remembers me of this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsV15_-E92Y&feature=related

I could understand it if you connected the controller, so that it charges - the xbox usually keeps running until the controller is fully charged - but it won't display any video signal in this case.

(Better check the guide button and the power button too, maybe one of these is stuck). Otherwise I would recommend a separate power bar with an off switch.

I don't know if anyone has brought it up either, but plugging your Xbox in to a power strip is bad for it

my friend called xbox and was having problems, one of their questions is 'Do you have it plugged in to a power strip?' he did, and they told him plugging it in to a strip is bad news because the box's power brick has a surge protector in there.

i'm not an electrician, and I know it has nothing to do with the phantom activating your xbox, but you might want to take it off the strip and give it its own outlet while you're at it.

Make sure that the power cord is plugged directly into a working wall outlet and not into an extension cord, a surge protector, or a power strip.

I know, it shocked me when I heard about it

two other things people should know:
    • Do not put the power supply on a stereo speaker, an amplifier, or a heat source such as a radiator or a heat register.
    • Plug the power supply directly into a working wall outlet. You may experience problems if you use an extension cord or a power strip if the extension cord or the power strip is faulty or cannot supply the required power to the console.

My 360 did this once a few weeks ago.

It's also randomly rebooting, but it does it for like a day, and then weeks of nothing.

My 360 did this for a while. I had to start unplugging it when I wasn't playing it. One day it just stopped however. I've got no idea what caused it or fixed though.

The 360 is going to win the console war. Why? Because they will all come to life at once and kill the other consoles.

If you read any peice of electronic equipments manual, it will say dont use it on a power strip or extension cord. Its because theoretically if you were using a 40 year old extension cord on a 40 year old wall outlet, it could possibly not supply enough electricity to the device causing it to malfunction, or worst case scenario, tries to draw more electricity than the extension cord or outlet can handle, and catches fire.

A refrigerator, an airconditioner and an electric heater are pretty much the only things that you own that will draw enough power to cause any real problems when plugged into an extension cord or power strip. An Xbox draws a relatively small amount of electricity.

This is what is known in the electronics industry as "covering your ass" or "protecting your worst customers from themselves". They need to make sure that if someone has a 360 plugged into a power strip plugged into a power strip and their house catches fire, that they can say "we told you so". :P
