Terra Phoenix is an homage to XCOM and its ilk in nearly every way. It recently appeared on the
Funorb website at its launch and has been tempting me with its nostalgic ways for a few weeks now.
Unlike XCOM, the first act is FREE! It's also Java-only, so if you want you can load it up right now (and I recommend you do, if only to see a pretty login screen and see what the game is like).
If you want to play more than the first act, you have to subscribe. (Boo), but hey, the first act is free, like old Id games!
Remember them?
Like XCOM, you command a squad of units against a number of enemies, who at the beginning appear to be civilians wearing hoodies, but things soon turn... mysterious.
Intro:
January 8th 2028: Without warning, the world was engulfed in a nuclear war.
The ravaged surface of the earth laid littered with craters. Radioactive vapours drifted across the sky, turning the sunsets blood red and melted the icecaps, which flooded large areas of the planet.
As the first bombs fell, the military tried to rush as many people as possible into the safety of shelters.
But there was never enough space and nowhere near enough time.
16 weeks later in a British bunker outside Leyburn, the great steel doors are about to open. It is time to breathe life from the ashes, let operation TERRA PHOENIX begin.
Mission 1:
As the leader of Alpha team you have been assigned to secure the location around our bunker.
It has been a few months since the end of the apocalypse and the landscape is likely to still be charred with the remains of the war so keep your eyes sharp. We have yet to receive any information about other survivors, so you will be operating in the dark.
Objectives -
Explore the area around the bunker
Keep your squad alive.
Tutorial time! Looks like this first mission is part-story, part-tutorial.
It guides me through moving a single man around the base before I make my way into the great outdoors.
I walk my Brit up the stairs, then down the stairs, showing an impeccable amount of skill at clicking twice to move a character, but then...
ATTACK! Looks like our return to the outside world has not gone unnoticed. A group of hooded civilians, who I will now refer to as "Hoodies" attacks the rest of my (previously uncontrollable) squad outside!
Two of my squadmates are killed in the line of duty. Looks like I'll have to get the rest of the squad in there to clean out these rats!
Oh shit! The hoodies made it all the way up to the front of the base! Luckily, the SA80 this Brit is carrying makes quick work of both of the scoundrels!
Walking outside, the Brits spot another hoody. This one charging in from the lovely, well-kept footpath that must have not been harmed with the falling nuclear weapons.
A burst from one of the Brits' SMGs quickly downs her. I think I've got to be careful with this gun, it looks like it can quickly run out of ammo and tear through time units too.
I start to set up the Brits just outside the entrance to the bunker, waiting for the "tutorial" Brit to run towards us for more cover. Unfortunately, this looks like what the hoodies were waiting for, and more charge the entrance.
A shotgun blast to the rifleman looks like it stings, but it appears to just be a flesh wound.
Firing back with the 3 Brits, both hoodies are soon dealt with.
Waiting for my Time Units to recharge between turns, I set my Brits up in a formation to cover each other. Looking back, it was the perfect place to throw a grenade. Luckily, that did not happen.
They're really coming out of the woodwork now. More hoodies turn the corner closest to the base. They're dropped almost as soon as they turn the corner. Unfortunately, a couple more shots hit Jim. He's not enjoying this fight, but I think the British moustache saved him!
Next turn, another appears. She is killed just as quickly, and the mission is over.
Loadout:
As you'd expect, there is a chance to research, load up on equipment, and go to the toilet before the next mission. Research is not available yet due to not having a lab, but I can look at the details to my weapons.
My guys are also exceptionally weak, and cannot even carry a rifle or body armour in many cases, let alone both!
Looks like our next mission is again in Jolly Old Britain. Let's go!
Mission 2:
Well we may as well start off at a run. I'm going to have to cut a swathe through these hoodies in order to rescue the guys trapped between us and them. This should be fun.
My Brits start out in typical XCOM style, all facing the same way in a helipad. At least it's not all hunched up in a transport plane.
My biggest mistake. While wanting to take down as many hoodies as possible, I stand one of my Brits straight in front of the main exit to the building before firing off all his shots. My men will need to go the long way around.
Ok, they're all out and ready for the next turn. Let's kick butt!
The guys we're meant to save take a bit of a pounding, but they're ok for now. Slightly hurt, but still firing back!
I set my Brits up to shoot. They take out a few of the hoodies, but it looks like more and more are coming.
I position two men, including our friend Jim, inside the heaviest-hit building. They're able to shoot out at anyone attacking. It doesn't help as one of the people we are trying to save falls under the onslaught.
Screaming with murderous rage at the death of the man he was trying to save, as well as Stress from being hurt in the previous mission, Jim runs to the front of the hut and takes 4 potshots at the 4 hoodies standing mere metres from him. Every one connects! Every one a killing blow!
GO JIM!
Just one man left. I am slightly worried about him, as the grenade which was meant to topple him, as well as flush him out from behind the cover he was in, appears to have done nothing at all apart from damage the nearby woodland.
In a moment of madness, I decide that more explosions are the order of the day! Unfortunately, the second man falls short.
Luckily, he still has 17 time units. Enough for one good shot...
SUCCESS! The last hoody is felled, and our Brits can go back to the base for a cup of tea and a Stella!

"Radioactive vapours drifted across the sky, turning the sunsets blood red and melted the icecaps, which flooded large areas of the planet."
The obvious answer is a Wizard did it.
I played Terra Phoenix and it was all kinds of fun. If they released this for the DS it would be a day one purchase.
