Battlefield: Bad Company - The console only Battlefield game! Out now.
My impressions of this are that I am buying it when it comes out.
Glaring retardedness such as the actual $$ for guns and some issues that are hopefully only beta-ish aside, I am finding it difficult to the beta down since the day it dropped. The destructible environments are seriously fun. The support and recon classes that have really undone before features like mortar strike and the controllable missile are badass, as is the arty in oasis. I'm hoping the retail contains alot more varied vehicles and maps though.
If you're not having fun, play until you find a squad that actually communicates and works together. A 2 recon 1 support squad on oasis that works together is an extreme defense on that map.

Finding a good squad when the full game comes out shouldn't be an issue, as you'll be able to squad up with your friends. Not including the buddy system in the beta was a huge, huge mistake and doesn't do well for a first impression. Not everyone realizes that they just didn't incorporate it. A lot of the social elements were removed in the beta, so you're always playing with randoms who never seem to communicate.
I'll be picking this up on release, though, and don't forget about PA Battlefield. We'll be able to actually make use of having that as your friend when the full game comes out in June.

Such as? I mean that genuinely, because I didn't find I had anything more to add, other than my thoughts about weapon-selection.
Well since I can't remember all three pages off the top of my head forgive me if I mention a few that they did mention.
Horrific hit detection, near zero spash damage, graphical glitches on Oasis making the ground look staticy with black spots all over it from time to time, things exploding into the air and staying there on Oasis, when looking at the weapon screen zooming on certain items makes them zoom straight off the screen, taking 10% of your health fall damage for every foot you fall, certain items that should explode being static, for example when you blow up a wall a small crate next to it won't be destroyed even if you shoot a tank shell directly at it, game crashing and hard locking at the end of a round, items not unlocking when you unlock them making you have to go to the unlock screen multiple times before they actually unlock, not getting points towards dogtags/patches when you do things that should go towards unlocking them etc.
That's all that I can really think of off the top of my head.
Oh and one thing I just thought of, more of a complaint/suggestion not a bug.
Now I understand that on Ascension that if the castle was destroyable it would kinda break the map, but for cripes sake at least make some damage decals appear on the walls. Before I figured out that you couldn't destroy the castle walls I fired a few rockets and threw a few grenades at them and not a scratch. Now like I said I understand that you can't or shouldn't destroy the castle walls, but at least show some damage decals, scorch marks, or something.
Before anybody starts slapping their chest with a limp wrist while drooling and going, "Durr but it are be beta!" I know, I understand, I'm just listing things that I've seen thus far.
Fair enough, I've seen a few of those myself. Hit-detection I've not had too many issues with, but I think I've seen some. Splash-damage I'm not sure if it's a bug, but certainly a complaint that RPGs seem to have absolutely no force at all. I've seen more than a few objects get stuck in the air, and would hope that'd be fixed.
I've not had any problems with unlockable things sticking though, or the console hard-locking at certain times.

Well I don't know if it's hit detection or splash damage or a combination of both, but there have been multiple instances of me hitting somebody square in the face with my under the barrel grenade launcher only to survive and kill me.
Also remember on the things you haven't witnessed, you may have just been lucky since the console is a closed system it's not like it could be certain hardware or software I'm running because we all have the same thing.
Oh, I didn't mean if I'd not seen it then it doesn't count, I believe you've seen those issues. Just if I've not seen them myself (and not heard about them much from others.. I expect every game to have some lag and disconnect issues and stuff), then I can't list them myself. But yeah, there's certainly some stuff I'd like to see fixed or explained before the full release.

FYI, I wasn't accusing you of anything, just clarifying.
I finally finished up my beta preview over at MSXBOX-WORLD.
SCOTT'S (Bamelin's) COMMENTS
I knew the Battlefield: Bad Company beta was coming up, however I wasn’t home when the ever-so-small window of opportunity opened to get in without having to subscribe to fileplanet or the like. It was therefore with great relief that one of my buddies emailed me with a beta key allowing me a glimpse into what DICE has in store for us come June.
First off, let me say that I’ve been a big fan of the Battlefield series, ever since Battlefield 1942 came out of left field and stormed onto the PC gaming scene. Battlefield seemed to be a natural extension of the focus on team based combat that Tribes and Counterstrike had opened up. Battlefield 2 and it’s numerous mods, continued to bring that “big epic battle†style of excitement home to the PC, and also opened up this style of gameplay to the console market as well.
It was therefore with some excitement that I downloaded the beta and fired it up on my Xbox 360. There was some difficulty initially getting into a match, no doubt because the servers were being hammered. When I did finally get into a match, I jumped right in without bothering with such niceties like “kit selectionâ€. What finally greeted me, really was a treat, even to a somewhat jaded gamer like myself.
My initial first impression was that the game looked and handled a lot like the Call of Duty 4. TTK (Time to kill) however is a lot longer than Call of Duty 4, with it sometimes seeming like an eternity to take down an enemy solider. I’m unsure if this could be attributed to lag, bad hit detection, a purposely-long TTK, or a combination of all three. This irritated me as small leaps off a window would take off large amounts of health, but bullets didn’t seem to do as much damage as I would have liked.
Despite this minor irritation, the game is a joy to play for anyone that enjoys infantry based combat. After getting slaughtered a few times I decided to experiment with the different kit selections and I found a lot to like. Players are going to be able to choose between Assault, Demolition, Recon (Sniper), Spec Ops, and Support (medic). All five classes have a variety of weaponry that can be unlocked as you rank up through the game. Your rank carries over from game to game as does your ranking, which creates that “just one more kill†dynamic that is very prevalent in Call of Duty 4. Unfortunately not all weapons will be unlockable through ranking up – some weaponry will require a cash investment over the Xbox Live Marketplace or PS3 Store. While the developers have assured fans that these weapons will not unbalance the game, it is definitely a troubling development. Most FPS’s are modeled on the “level playing field†concept, meaning that all players have access to the same weaponry and it is skill that dictates victory. One can only hope that these “buyable†weapons are indeed balanced, or no doubt fans will be screaming bloody murder.
One other neat team dynamic is the option to spawn with your “squadâ€. This is very similar to how squad spawning works in Frontlines: Fuel of War, and means that you will never be far away from the action. Currently in the beta there is no way to play with people from your friends list, however EA has assured us that this is a temporary thing for the beta.
We’ve talked a lot about infantry combat, but what about the vehicle mayhem that made the Battlefield series famous to begin with? Vehicles add a whole other dimension to the game and are the biggest way in which the title departs from Call of Duty 4. Like all Battlefield games there are a ton of different vehicles to choose from, and I am happy to report that almost all of them are a blast to use. Vehicle combat seems fairly well balanced, meaning vehicles can do a lot of damage, but are not invincible against infantry, in particular the Demolition class which carries a big rocket launcher. While not indestructible, vehicles like tanks and helicopters do give you the sense of being just that, which is the main reason that they are so much fun to use.
The beta revolves exclusively around a new gametype called “Gold Rush†in which one team defends caches of gold while the other team attempts to destroy them. There are currently 2 maps, one called Oasis, and the other called Ascension. Oasis is your typical Middle Eastern style map, and feels very expansive. Vehicles are littered throughout the map, as are little towns and villages to rampage through. Ascension on the other hand is an up close and personal infantry combat affair, with the attackers attempting to ascend a hill littered with buildings and enemy soldiers.
The game features an all-new engine called Frostbite that is exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 meaning the game is going to look different from other titles you have played that use licensed engines. Not only that, the Frostbite engine allows players to literally destroy whole chunks of building walls, and deform the landscape around them as the battle rages on, which really forces players to rethink strategies, as “cover†is often only a temporary thing.
In closing, Battlefield: Bad Company does not disappoint. The game already looks and plays pretty good considering it’s just a beta, and some players such as myself are already counting down the days until the retail version becomes available. Despite my despair over “purchasable†weapons over the Xbox Live Marketplace and Playstation Network Store, I still think that Battlefield: Bad Company is going to be a must own title for anyone with even a remote interest in FPS team based games.
DICE has done a great job in the past, it looks like Battlefield: Bad Company will continue the tradition, provided these purchasable weapons do not mess up the game balance when Battlefield: Bad Company hits the retail shelves.
Until then you’ll have to excuse me, I’m feeling the siren call of Battlefield: Bad Company calling me back into the trenches.
WAYNE'S COMMENTS
Upon hearing about the recently launched Multiplayer Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company, I as I'm sure many gamers looked for a way to get into the closed Beta. Luckily, we had received an invite code here at msxbox-world and I was downloading and ready to try out the next FPS multiplayer shooter with some degree of enthusiasm.
I'm still trying to take the Beta at face value, as if I'm being honest, I really was not impressed overall. Though I will stress that this is a Beta and may not be representative of the final retail product when released.
The Beta has a few touchy quirks that I really like, for one the visuals do look really nice, but there is the occasional noticeable dip in framerate. You are also able to pick where you spawn, which is a really good feature as the maps are quite big. Though if you spawn at your base there is typically vehicles available so you can get back into the action rather quickly, or you can opt to spawn with you squad and get right back in on the action immediately and attempt to support your team – though more often than not you can spawn in the line of fire. This often proves to be a bit disorientating at first, as you may spawn next to a squad mate who is getting shot up badly by the opposing team, ultimately meaning that you may be taking damage as soon as you spawn. The controller layout is somewhat different to what fans of Halo or Call of Duty 4 might expect, and it's still taking me some time to get accustomed with the control layout (even more so for controlling vehicles). I think I have things down pretty well now, my only real gripe is that when I shoot about 60% of the people I bump into, they just will not die. This could be something to do with the EA servers, but I don't appear to be lagging nor does anyone else in the game during gameplay. Perhaps we just have more health in Bad Company, though I always seem to die quite quickly compared to others.
As well as the two multiplayer maps, the Beta only features one game mode, which has you either playing as an Attacker or Defender. In either case it is upto you and your squad to storm buildings and areas to destroy the gold crates when on the Attacker's side, and to defend the gold crates with the rest of your squad when on the Defending team.
I have not played a Battlefield game before, so was quite looking forward to getting some play time in with the Multiplayer Beta, as I really can get caught up in the multiplayer aspect of these first person shooters. There's just something about Bad Company that isn't cutting it for me though. As I play the Beta I can appreciate some of the finer things which stand out really well, the visuals for one are really sharp with some smooth animation, as well as the larger scale maps. All in all I guess it more closely resembles Call of Duty 4 in the way that you are able to sprint and have secondary fire functionality on some of the weapon classes. For example you can turn your default machine gun into a grenade launcher, and this is what I really like about the Beta (which mostly reminds me of Red Faction as this is the first shooter I played where you could destroy the environment), and that is for the lazy gamer, like myself, if I need to take a short cut (or just can't be assed running through some building) I can quite happily blow a hole in the wall and have available a quick impromptu exit.
From the two multiplayer levels available in the Battlefield Beta, it seems that everything within a level can happily be obliterated, this includes lots of trees, fences, buildings and of course vehicles.
The vehicles themselves handle really well, you can even ride as a passenger alongside random gamers or even as a gunner in a tank, jeep or helicopter. The Beta would no doubt be more enjoyable when playing with groups of friends, not everyone seems so willing to communicate in the Beta though, which often means you can either charge in like Rambo (and die) or try and follow and support someone that looks like he has at least an inkling of what he is doing.
Though from Scott's thoughts, it seems maybe I am just not quite “getting itâ€. From my experience I do feel that Battlefield: Bad Company will more than likely delight fans of the Battlefield series of games, for me though it unfortunately just doesn't quite cut it. The only thing that really has me down is how difficult it seems to kill enemies when on foot with normal weaponry. In a tank I can quite easily kill plenty of players before being blown to bits, as you would probably expect.
I was looking forward to the release of Bad Company, and it's certainly something I will keep my eye on, but the Beta has kind of killed that anticipation for me. I am now more interested to see what the full game has to offer in regards to a campaign, perhaps some kind of story driven co-op campaign, judging by the launch trailer. However, fundamentally it is the multiplayer on these types of games that keeps me playing from months to years on end.
Potentially having to 'buy' new weapons just to stay on a level playing field doesn't make the game much more desirable either. There is clearly some things I'm having issues with, and that is some of the gameplay mechanics as well as just the sheer amount of ammunition it currently takes to kill someone online.
So how do you tell the difference between friend or foe? Is it the names in blue, yellow, or red? Teamkilling is just too easy to do.
You know, I've never had a problem TK'ing people, nor have I seen much of it happen other people or myself. Your teammates have their names in blue over their bodies. They also show up on your mini-map. Enemies don't have a name over their heads, and if you keep your crosshair on them for a short period, you'll see a red dot over their bodies and on the mini-map.
I've only TK'ed someone once, and the rest of the time I've just shot at enemies without a name over their head. So far it hasn't let me down. The maps in the beta are segmented in small enough zones, too. A lot of the fighting occurs close quarters, and when it's a distance you can probably tell it's an enemy from the direction he's headed. The enemy spawn base shows up as a triangle in the game and mini-map, after all. If someone is coming from that direction, you might as well take the shot.

I have TK'd a few times, once was my fault I was a sniper right in the middle of a huge firefight and a squadmate spawned next to me. I twitch fired and one shotted him with the Barrett, the other time wasn't my fault though.
I was sniping on oasis and located what I thought was an enemy waaaay far out like right at the end of your draw distance. I put the crosshair on him for a second and he was so far out that no white X popped up so I fired and headshot my own guy. I think he was just so far away the game didn't even think I could see him. Other than that I've had no problems.
If you're not having fun, play until you find a squad that actually communicates and works together. A 2 recon 1 support squad on oasis that works together is an extreme defense on that map.
After playing the beta briefly, I think this is the biggest barrier to the game being fun for me. My experience is such that I would be surprised if an effective squad came together without being in a clan or something first.
The things they stripped from Battlefield 2 on PC (among them an auto-kick feature) just make it stand out to me, and honestly, I prefer the more dynamic flag capping of BF2 to the whole attack/defense Gold Crate thing.
I hate to bring up the stigma of the console fratboy or 13 year old Halo player, but I think having three teammates with high negative scores at the end of the round speaks for itself.
Thanks to the massive outcry of the plebs, EA is removing the microtransations for weapons in Bad Company! Those five weapons that were previously purchasable will be achievable by everyone for free. People who buy the Gold Edition gets those five weapons immediately, while normal edition players can unlock them upon reaching the final promotion.
Here's the full interview spoilered:
April 9, 2008 - When the Multiplayer Beta launched a couple of weeks ago, early adopters of the download were greeted with some daunting news if they went fishing through Bad Company's list of weapons. It appeared as though Electronic Arts -- as they've done in the past with such games as NCAA Football -- would be charging for components of Battlefield: Bad Company that should be free, and would have been last generation. The early peek into the beta showed five weapons that needed to be purchased via Xbox Live Marketplace. The outcry from the public was feverish.
Luckily their shrieks of horror did not fall on deaf ears. No weapons – we repeat: NO WEAPONS – will have a price tag attached to them.
We sat down for a talk with Karl-Magnus Troedsson, Senior Producer at DICE working on Battlefield: Bad Company, to get the final word on exactly what users will find in both the standard edition for Battlefield: Bad Company as well as the Gold Edition, and how all that works into the wonderful world of microtransactions. IGN: Let's say I go out and buy the standard edition for $59.99 and my buddy goes out and buys the Gold Edition for ten dollars more. What am I going to have to do to be able to play the same game with the same content as my buddy?
Karl-Magnus Troedsson: This is what the big confusion is about. I think we clarified what the other five weapons were. You have to do the marketing programs that we're going to announce further ahead. The last five Gold Edition weapons, this is where the confusion is and this is what we want to clarify. We are not charging for any guns that are out there. We read the forums, we read all of the articles and listening to the storm that is out there, we're not going to charge for any of those guns.
IGN: So there's no charge for the Gold Edition guns?
Karl-Magnus: No, there's no charge for any of the guns in the game. All of the guns in the game can be achieved without purchasing them. All guns are available to everyone. However, we want to give some exclusivity to those who buy the Gold Edition. They will get the five Gold Edition weapons from Day One when they put the disc in. People that don't buy the Gold Edition can get the five additional weapons by getting to the final rank in the game. There will be a golden, shiny five-weapon unlock when they hit level 25 in the game.
IGN: Oh okay, that'll likely weather the storm a bit from what people are saying, I would think. Any other microtransaction stuff that you guys are planning later down the line that could rustle feathers? Aside from maps and themes and whatnot.
Karl-Magnus: No, the whole idea of looking at microtransactions in the game was something that, when we started on this game a long time ago, everyone was looking on news ways for revenue. We're not doing that now. It's not about the money. We're not going to make that much money off of it. It's more about what we can offer to the people out there. If people don't, it sounds a bit like people didn't see the value of the Gold Edition, and those who didn't want the Gold Edition were unhappy that they'd be missing out on these weapons and that's what we're trying to remedy. Sure, there might be some themes and gamer pictures, but there won't be anything else like what we're dealing with now.
It's really important for us to get across that we do listen to what people say out there. We don't have time to run around and comment on everything but we do listen to what people say out in the community. It's really important feedback and that's why we make changes like this.
IGN: Was this something that was discussed? Saying, "this is something people might not like this but let's see how they react to it" or was it more of a shock that people reacted the way they did?
Karl-Magnus: It was actually a more complex internal problem then that. In the Beta, when you go into the unlock page, you can see there are five weapons that say "will be purchasable through Xbox Live", but those are actually the five weapons that will be released as marketing programs. That was actually a big bug in the Beta, an internal miscommunication that we had. The Gold Edition weapons, that's where we had a lot of discussion and that's why we listened and made the decision to not charge.
So just so every single one of our readers is clear on what they'll need to do to get every single weapon in Battlefield: Bad Company, here's a quick summary. The Gold Edition, priced at $69.99, will have five weapons not seen in the launch disc in the Standard Edition. Those who purchased the Standard Edition can unlock these guns by reaching the level cap of 25. Both Gold Edition and Standard Edition users will have to participate in five separate EA marketing programs (no purchase necessary, we're told it will be easy as signing up for a newsletter), each of which will have one weapon.
Battlefield: Bad Company launches on June 23 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Both Gold Edition and Standard Edition users will have to participate in five separate EA marketing programs (no purchase necessary, we're told it will be easy as signing up for a newsletter), each of which will have one weapon.

What I don't understand:
EA! Creating the weapons can't cost that much, you are gonna make a killing off the game, and this content was made before you shipped(?), so why the fuck make us do anything else than pay for it at the start with the 60 bucks the game is sold at?
Next thing you know I'll have to sign up for "FREE MEN ENHANCEMENT PILLS" and "FREE CREDIT CARD OFFERS" just to play the fucking game.
EA, cut the bullshit, people are already gonna pay for the game.
Battlefield: Bad Company is Xbox 360 exclusive. You'll have to wait for Battlefield 3, which is apparently in development and uses an enhanced form of the Frostbite engine (same engine used for Bad Company).

Wikipedia says it is coming out for PS3. Just saying.
Then I guess it's just console exclusive, but there you go. No Battlefield: Bad Company for the PC. It doesn't bother me any, as I rather would have Battlefield 3. I hope they give us some juicy details of it soon, if only to confirm the information from the leaked document.

Not that I don't appreciate them making the weapons free, but I find it hilarious that there are people and Digg articles out there that are all "EA MADE WEAPONS FREE! THE BOYCOTT WORKED!!" Sure, I'd say the mass complaining changed their minds, but a boycott? Really?
At any rate, I'm pretty excited for the game since I saw the trailer for it what must have been over a year ago. The whole destructible environment deal sounds pretty neat-o. Wish I could have gotten into the beta, but Fileplanet had to be all dumb and dumber.

For those with the beta, how is the leveling in this game compared to COD4?
COD4's leveling was perfect, imho. But I remember back when I was playing BF2, the leveling considered of too much price for too little gain. 100 kills... yay I unlocked a weapon that'll still be useless against armor! Next step: 1,000 kills... uh, ok. Did that, another semi-useful weapon. Now for 10,000 kills. Uhhh, really?
It's compounded by the fact that BF2 rounds invariably last longer than COD4 rounds and that personally initiative (in my experience) in BF isn't rewarded as well as it is in COD.
Reviving the thread since the demo is out.
Seems you can invite buddies into a squad now before joining a game.
Thank god, now I can see what it's like to play a team based game with an actual team.
Is the multiplayer not working for anyone else? I Downloaded the demo and played the singleplayer mission just fine. But after reading the whole terms of agreement thing it keeps telling me I'm not allowed to play!

Working good for me, but every game I have joined has been laggy as all hell.

Wayne was pretty harsh on the game. I'll admit at first I wasn't sure if I liked it, but the game has definately grown on me.
Yeah, I've had that happen once or twice myself. And almost TK'd someone on my team that was going to do it to someone else.
If someone else gets to the damn artillery first, let them have it. Geez.

Guess what the new standard is for a modern combat online multiplayer game? Hint: charlie oscar delta.

Here's the full interview spoilered:

Yeah I'm totally buying this game.
Goddamn it. Stupid 7th gen and your unrelenting waves of awesomeness.

At any rate, I'm pretty excited for the game since I saw the trailer for it what must have been over a year ago. The whole destructible environment deal sounds pretty neat-o. Wish I could have gotten into the beta, but Fileplanet had to be all dumb and dumber.

Seems you can invite buddies into a squad now before joining a game.
Thank god, now I can see what it's like to play a team based game with an actual team.
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
Working good for me, but every game I have joined has been laggy as all hell.
Final Fantasy XI -> Carbuncle - Samash
And is it confirmed MP play is in demo? (a/v in on my tv is broken atm so I can't check)
I played the beta quite alot and enjoyed it... but I need to get my hands on money for GTA4 first before anything else.
